Aaron Sorkin wanted Tom Cruise to play Steve Jobs in the new biopic about the Apple co-founder.
Leaked Sony emails show that the role - which has subsequently been handed to Michael Fassbender - was initially set aside for Tom, who was described by Aaron as "an actor who can really handle language ... and a movie star who feels comfortable owning the stage".
And when director Danny Boyle suggested Michael was the ideal candidate for the part, the screenwriter said: "This used to be an event. I don't know who Michael Fassbender is and the rest of the world isn't going to care. This is insane."
However, he later backtracked, saying Michael is a suitable candidate for the part of Jobs, who died in October 2011, aged 56.
Aaron said: "He's a great actor whose time has come.
"Yeah, if the movie's good, he'll be on the cover of everything and get nominated for everything."
The eagerly awaited film has endured lots of casting issues over the last few months, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale both backing out of the project.
Earlier this week, Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman declined the chance to star as Joanna Hoffman, the former Mac marketing chief.
However, Seth Rogen has been cast as Steve Wozniak, while Jeff Daniels is reportedly being lined up to play the part of John Sculley, the CEO of Apple from 1983 to 1993.
Sony is considering making a '21 Jump Street' and 'Men In Black' crossover film.
Leaked emails, seen by The Wall Street Journal, show the studio is weighing up the idea of releasing a film that fuses the two franchises together in 2016 or 2017.
In one of the emails, Sony's Motion Picture Chief Amy Pascal said: "We don't have a script yet so we'll be greenlighting the movie off the concept and the talent involved."
Jonah Hill - who featured in '21 Jump Street' and '22 Jump Street', this year's sequel - responded enthusiastically to the suggestion.
He wrote: "jump street merging with mib i think that's clean and rad and powerful. (sic)"
Although Jonah is keen to appear in the film, it appears that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have yet to agree to participate.
However, 'Jump Street' directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have agreed to produce, and may even direct, the film should the plans come to fruition.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Sony and Marvel Studios have held discussions over a 'Spider-Man' and 'Captain America' crossover.
Sony staged talks with Marvel about the possibility of Peter Parker featuring in 'Captain America: Civil War', but the discussions broke down.

Joel Edgerton "dreams" of being a director like Ridley Scott.
The 40-year-old actor was so in awe of the director - who has worked on 'Blade Runner' and 'Alien' - he admitted he one day hopes to replicate the 77-year-old director's talent in some films of his own.
Recalling their time working together on the film 'Exodus: Gods and Kings', Joel shared: "[Ridley's] like the hardest working guy, and obviously the most prolific, but the hardest working guy and he had such a 'let's just get to it' work ethic.
"But so incredibly prepared that that allowed him to get to set and just motor through things. And he makes you want to go to work for him, hard. Like he's a great general.
"I can only dream and hope that I could get anywhere close to how decisive he is. And I gather that that comes from years of experience. He just knows exactly how to shoot things. He knows exactly where to place a camera. He makes those decisions on every front so quickly."
After revealing how the original cut of the film was over four hours long, Joel explained how one scene starring himself and Christian Bale had been removed.
He shared: "There are a few scenes from memory that are cut from the movie. There's an interesting scene after I'm coronated that is between Christian and I, where I'm staring at myself for a long time in the mirror.
"Ridley was just filming me, being myself!"
Felicity Jones only discovered "the intimate side" of Stephen Hawking's life after she agreed to star in 'The Theory of Everything'.
The new movie, which also features Eddie Redmayne, tells the story of Professor Hawking's relationship with Jane Wilde and his battle against motor neuron disease.
Speaking at the UK premiere of the new film in central London, Felicity told BANG Showbiz that she was touched by the story, explaining: "I obviously knew the story of Stephen Hawking, because he's such an incredible icon. I felt like I knew him really well, even though I didn't know the intimate side of his life.
"But it was only when I read the script that I realised about this phenomenal relationship that he and Jane Hawking had, and the relationship with [Jane's second husband] Jonathan Jones."
Jane and Stephen were married between 1965 and 1995, and their love story is the focal point of the new film, which also stars Emily Watson and Charlie Cox.
Meanwhile, Eddie - who plays the Professor in the new film - claimed recently that he was "incredibly flirtatious" when he visited the set of 'The Theory of Everything'.
Eddie said he was in awe of the Professor's charm and wit when he was introduced to Felicity, who plays his ex-wife.
The 32-year-old star said: "It's amazing, the aura he has. You're so used to how he looks - the silhouette and the voice - and I was really nervous. I just waffled - talking about him, to him. It was pretty embarrassing. Felicity came in and they got on like a house on fire. Stephen was incredibly flirtatious. A complete player."
Discussions have been held about a 'Spider-Man' and 'Captain America' crossover.
A series of leaked documents, seen by the Wall Street Journal, show that Sony has staged talks with Marvel about the possibility of Peter Parker featuring in 'Captain America: Civil War'.
The talks are detailed in leaked emails from the likes of Amy Pascal, the Chief of Sony Pictures, Doug Belgrad, Sony's President of Production, and Bob Iger, the Chair of Disney.
In one of the emails, sent from Doug to Amy, he proposes a scenario in which Marvel would produce three new 'Spider-Man' movies, with Sony retaining "creative control, marketing and distribution".
What's more, the documents show that Sony - which has a long-term licence in relation to 'Spider-Man' - has the chance to progress with the franchise, after discussions broke down between themselves and Marvel.
Additional emails show plans are being developed for an animated 'Spider-Man' comedy film from the creators of 'The Lego Movie', Chris Miller and Phil Lord.
This comes shortly after Al Pacino suggested he could appear in an upcoming Marvel film.
The 74-year-old star confirmed he's met with Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios, and hinted he may soon star in a comic book-inspired film.
He told the Happy Sad Confused podcast: "I've met with the Marvel guy. It's a Marvel how things happen.
"I would imagine that either there's something he feels is right for me and if I feel..."
Al was then interrupted by a telephone call and joked it was Marvel calling to stop him from revealing any spoilers of the film.
Nine luxury cars intended for the new James Bond film have been stolen from a garage in Germany.
The fleet of vehicles, which includes five Range Rover Sport models, are worth £630,000 and were specially customised for the eagerly-awaited new Bond film, titled 'SPECTRE'.
Land Rover told the Daily Express newspaper: "We are aware of the theft of a number of Range Rovers in Dusseldorf, Germany. This is a criminal act and the police are carrying out a full investigation."
The vehicles were set to feature in scenes shot in the Alps.
Details of the new Bond film were released last week at an event staged at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, South East England.
And looking forward to the new movie, Daniel Craig claimed the script for 'SPECTRE' is "better than we had last time".
Daniel, 46, who's playing James Bond for the fourth time in the new film, said he expects 'SPECTRE' to be superior to the 2012 hit 'Skyfall', which made in excess of $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office.
He said: "We've got an amazing cast and, I think, a better script than we had last time."
'SPECTRE' will be released in cinemas worldwide on November 6, 2015.
Felicity Jones says 'The Theory of Everything' is a "unique love story".
The 31-year-old actress plays Jane, the wife of the theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) in the biopic, and said the film portrays the couple's special bond.
She told BANG Showbiz: "It's an incredibly unique love story and Stephen and Jane are both such phenomenal people and when you meet them, they're so witty. You know, there's nothing that you can say that can compete."
The movie - which received its premiere in London on Tuesday (09.12.14) - follows the couple's 30-year marriage before their divorce in 1995, and is inspired by Jane's memoir 'Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen', which detailed her relationship with the star, his success in physics, and his diagnosis of motor neurone disease.
Despite the couple splitting up, Felicity explained their relationship worked for so long because of their intellect and excellent sense of humour which helped them overcome their issues for many years.
She added: "They're really sharp, sharp people, so we wanted to bring that humour that they both have into the film."
Other stars in the film include Tom Prior, Sophie Perry and Finlay Wright-Stephens, who play their three children Robert, Lucy and Timothy as youngsters.
