Prince Charles was thanked for banning foie gras from his royal menus during his visit to the White House on Thursday (19.03.15).
The 66-year-old British royal and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, went to the famous American building to meet with President Barack Obama and outside the residence animal rights activists assembled to let Charles know they appreciate his views on animal welfare and the environment.
One placard, held by a PETA supporter dressed in a giant goose suit, read: "Charlie is my darling for banning foie gras from royal menus."
PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - has long called for the ban of sales of foie gras, a delicacy made from force-feeding geese and ducks to fatten up their livers. The process causes much distress to the animals and effectively gives them diseased organs.
In 2008, the heir-to-the-throne ordered his personal chefs to stop buying foie gras and stop serving it to guests at his residences.
Charles was inspired to take the dish off his menus after receiving a letter from an animal rights activist from Bristol, South West England.
At the time, the letter writer received the following response from Charles' Deputy Master of the Household: "The Prince of Wales has asked me to write and thank you for your letter about animal welfare issues surrounding the production of foie gras and your experience. I just wanted to reassure you that The Prince of Wales has a policy that his chefs should not buy foie gras."
While at the White House Charles and Camilla enjoyed an informal talk with the president, during which Obama claimed the American public liked the British royal family "much better" than their own elected politicians.

Prince Charles was told by President Barack Obama that he was more popular in the US than American politicians when they met on Thursday (19.03.15).
The heir-to-the-British throne met with the president at the White House and as they chatted informally in the Oval Office, Obama expressed the love American citizens have for Charles and the rest of the royal family.
He said: "I think it's fair to say that the American people are quite fond of the royal family."
To which Charles replied: "That's awfully nice to know."
Obama then added: "They like them much better than they like their own politicians."
Charles then said: "I don't believe that."
The 66-year-old prince and the political leader then went on to discuss the royal's tour of Mount Vernon, the home of America's first president, George Washington.
Charles was joined by his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Vice President Joe Biden also sat with the trio.
Numerous journalists and photographers were allowed in the room to document parts of their informal chat and at one stage Charles pointed out The Sun's veteran royal photographer Arthur Edwards to Obama, 53, telling him the snapper had been photographing him for 35 years.
He also revealed the first president Edwards had photographed was Ronald Reagan, to which Obama said "awesome".
Obama is the sixth American president Charles has met in his lifetime during his 23 trips to the States.
Charles and Camilla are currently on a three-day visit to the country and are heading to Kentucky today (20.03.15) after spending two days in Washington DC.

Britain's Prince Charles is "haunted" and "horrified" by plastic being dumped in the sea.
The 66-year-old royal has made a passionate plea to stop people dumping their plastics in the sea, saying it risks harming future generations.
Prince Charles - whose eldest son Prince William is currently preparing for the birth of a second child with his wife Duchess Catherine - said: "Speaking as a grandfather with a new grandchild due to appear in this world in a month's time, I think we probably owe it to everyone else's grandchildren to grasp that solution."
Speaking in Washington DC, where he's travelled with the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Charles said the dumping of plastic is an issue that needs to be urgently addressed.
He remarked: "One issue that we absolutely cannot ignore is that of the increasing quantity of plastic waste in the marine environment.
"I was horrified to learn that, according to recent research, we collectively allow as much as eight million tonnes of plastic to enter the oceans every year.
"Today, almost half of all marine mammals now have plastic in their gut and I know I am not the only person haunted by the tragic images of seabirds, particularly albatrosses, that have been found dead, washed up on beaches after mistaking a piece of plastic for a meal."

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall enjoyed a guided tour of the Lincoln Memorial sculpture on Wednesday (18.03.15).
The British royal couple visited the statue in Washington DC and also saw the nearby monument to civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.
Charles and Camilla stopped at the spot where King gave his iconic "I have a dream" speech in 1963.

Prince Harry has announced he is taking part in a 1,000 mile trek across the UK to raise money for the charity Walking with the Wounded.
The 30-year-old British royal is committing himself to the military charity's Walk of Britain event which starts on August 22 in Scotland and ends in London on October 31 just months after he leaves the army himself.
Harry hopes the event will raise awareness of the difficulties military veterans face when they leave armed services as well as raising much-needed funds for rehabilitation for injured service personnel and community projects.
Speaking at the launch of the Walk of Britain at London's Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Wednesday (18.03.15), Harry said: "Walk of Britain will cover all parts of the country. Walking through the communities in which our service personnel and veterans grew up and now live. In doing so, Walk of Britain will give everyone the opportunity to meet these remarkable men and women ... People up and down the country will get to see first-hand the determination and resolve of those who have served, and in particular those who have been injured or suffer hidden wounds. They will see that whatever their circumstances these men and women are looking to the future. They are looking to employers to give them the chance to keep making a contribution to our communities."
Referring to his own imminent departure from the army after 10 years service, Harry admitted he expects his adjustment from being a soldier to civilian will have its challenges.
He explained: "The public's support for our Armed Forces continues to be extraordinary. However, as the memory of our military commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan fade, we must encourage people to continue supporting our servicemen and women; particularly those who are seeking to transition into civilian life. This process can be challenging, as it is for anyone seeking a new career. As I make this transition myself, I'm determined to do all I can to help others."
Harry previously took part in treks to the North Pole in 2011 and the South Pole in 2013 to raise money and awareness of the charity .
Before he begins the Walk of Britain, Harry - the son of Prince Charles and brother of Prince William - will spend the summer doing volunteer work in Africa.

Queen Elizabeth's fleet of luxury vintage cars are being damaged because of a leaking roof.
The British monarch's Daimler garage at Buckingham Palace in London is letting in rain water through its glass roof which is dripping onto her extensive collection of expensive vehicles and affecting the body work.
Among the queen's car collection are three Daimlers, three Rolls-Royce vehicles and two Bentleys.
Planning documents filed with Westminster Council and obtained by The Sun newspaper, reveal the garage has not been re-glazed for nearly 90 years.
The planned repairs will be paid for out of tax revenues that go to the monarch through the annual Sovereign Grant.
A Palace spokesman has confirmed the garage needs fixing and are part of a continuous "programme of work".
One of the queen's vintage cars caught the eye of 'Britain's Got Talent' judge Amanda Holden this week.
The ruling royal was driven to her engagement to open a new set of kennels at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home on Tuesday (17.03.15) in her Bentley State Limousine and Amanda was very impressed with the monarch's "wheels".
She posted on Twitter: "Me with the Queens wheels! @BDCH Her majesty did the opening of our new kennels. Proud moment (sic)"

Amanda Holden was impressed with Queen Elizabeth's car when the monarch opened a new set of kennels at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home on Tuesday (17.03.15).
The 'Britain's Got Talent' judge was invited to the event because she is an ambassador for the animal shelter in London and she was very "proud" to have the opportunity to meet the monarch and she couldn't believe how luxurious the queen's Bentley State Limousine is.
In a post on her Twitter account, Amanda said: "Me with the Queens wheels! @BDCH Her majesty did the opening of our new kennels. Proud moment (sic)"
When Amanda was introduced to the 88-year-old royal, she suggested Queen Elizabeth adopt owner-less corgi Beama, the 12-year-old mutt that was introduced to her wearing a Union Flag.
The 'TV' star asked the queen: "Are you are not tempted to take a corgi home?"
To which the queen replied: "Maybe. Not at the moment."
Amanda admitted she was tempted to take an unwanted dog home with her after spending the day at the shelter and she has promised her two daughters they can get a mutt mate for their pooch Rudie soon.
The 44-year-old beauty is quoted by the MailOnline as saying: "I was always a huge fan before I took on the ambassador's role. We already have one dog but I have told my daughters we may well get another one in the autumn. We will see how things go."
The queen - who was accompanied to the event by her husband Prince Philip - owns two corgis Willow and Holly and Candy and Vulcan, two dorgis which are a corgi/dachshund cross breed.
Other stars in attendance were model David Gandy and talk show host Paul O'Grady, both of whom are ambassadors for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.
