Prince Harry joins Walk For Britain

Prince Harry has announced he is taking part in a 1,000 mile trek across the UK to raise money for the charity Walking with the Wounded.

The 30-year-old British royal is committing himself to the military charity’s Walk of Britain event which starts on August 22 in Scotland and ends in London on October 31 just months after he leaves the army himself.

Harry hopes the event will raise awareness of the difficulties military veterans face when they leave armed services as well as raising much-needed funds for rehabilitation for injured service personnel and community projects.

Speaking at the launch of the Walk of Britain at London’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Wednesday (18.03.15), Harry said: "Walk of Britain will cover all parts of the country. Walking through the communities in which our service personnel and veterans grew up and now live. In doing so, Walk of Britain will give everyone the opportunity to meet these remarkable men and women … People up and down the country will get to see first-hand the determination and resolve of those who have served, and in particular those who have been injured or suffer hidden wounds. They will see that whatever their circumstances these men and women are looking to the future. They are looking to employers to give them the chance to keep making a contribution to our communities."

Referring to his own imminent departure from the army after 10 years service, Harry admitted he expects his adjustment from being a soldier to civilian will have its challenges.

He explained: "The public’s support for our Armed Forces continues to be extraordinary. However, as the memory of our military commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan fade, we must encourage people to continue supporting our servicemen and women; particularly those who are seeking to transition into civilian life. This process can be challenging, as it is for anyone seeking a new career. As I make this transition myself, I’m determined to do all I can to help others."

Harry previously took part in treks to the North Pole in 2011 and the South Pole in 2013 to raise money and awareness of the charity .

Before he begins the Walk of Britain, Harry – the son of Prince Charles and brother of Prince William – will spend the summer doing volunteer work in Africa.
