Prince Charles ‘haunted’ by environmental problem

Britain's Prince Charles is "haunted" and "horrified" by plastic being dumped in the sea.
The 66-year-old royal has made a passionate plea to stop people dumping their plastics in the sea, saying it risks harming future generations.
Prince Charles - whose eldest son Prince William is currently preparing for the birth of a second child with his wife Duchess Catherine - said: "Speaking as a grandfather with a new grandchild due to appear in this world in a month's time, I think we probably owe it to everyone else's grandchildren to grasp that solution."
Speaking in Washington DC, where he's travelled with the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Charles said the dumping of plastic is an issue that needs to be urgently addressed.
He remarked: "One issue that we absolutely cannot ignore is that of the increasing quantity of plastic waste in the marine environment.
"I was horrified to learn that, according to recent research, we collectively allow as much as eight million tonnes of plastic to enter the oceans every year.
"Today, almost half of all marine mammals now have plastic in their gut and I know I am not the only person haunted by the tragic images of seabirds, particularly albatrosses, that have been found dead, washed up on beaches after mistaking a piece of plastic for a meal."

Duchess Catherine due in ‘mid-April’

The Duchess of Cambridge has revealed she's due to give birth in "mid-April".
The 33-year-old royal is pregnant with her and Prince William's second child and she has ended speculation she could deliver the tot this month revealing her predicted delivery date to a member of the public during a charity engagement.
Catherine - who already has 19-month-old son Prince George with William - visited Brookhill Children's Centre in Woolwich, south east London, on Wednesday (18.03.15) which is run by the charity Home-Start.
Whilst there she met mothers who use the centre and volunteers who work for the organisation, including 49-year-old Christie Osbourne who she let slip in the due date to.
Recalling their meeting, Ms. Osbourne said: "I told her she is beautiful and that she's got a tiny little bump. I asked when her baby is due and she said mid-to-end of April."
During the visit, the duchess - also known as Kate Middleton - enjoyed a coffee morning with other mums and learnt about the work the charity does with families and youngsters dealing with issues such as mental health, bereavement, multiple births and disability. She also saw children using the Together for Twos' crèche.
Kate was also given a array of gifts for son George by well-wishers including
an Elmer the Patchwork Elephant book, a potty training book and a colour-sorting clock.
After getting the potty training book, the royal said: "We will certainly be needing that!"

Prince Charles and Camilla visit Lincoln Memorial

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall enjoyed a guided tour of the Lincoln Memorial sculpture on Wednesday (18.03.15).
The British royal couple visited the statue in Washington DC and also saw the nearby monument to civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.
Charles and Camilla stopped at the spot where King gave his iconic "I have a dream" speech in 1963.
The pair were joined on their tour by prominent American civil rights campaigner Jesse Jackson and Congressman John Lewis - both of whom helped organise the civil rights march in Selma, Alabama, in 1965, which was recently recalled in the film 'Selma'.
Afterwards, the couple were given a tour of Mount Vernon, which was the home of America's first president George Washington.
Charles, 66, also took a tour of the National Archives, where he viewed the United States 'Charters of Freedom' and the 1297 version of the Magna Carta - a treaty that is part of the American Bill of Rights and the Constitution that marks its 800th anniversary this week.
The couple are due to meet with President Barack Obama at the White House on Thursday (19.03.15) where they are expected to hold informal talks at the oval office.
Charles and Camilla then conclude their three-day US visit with a trip to Kentucky on Friday (20.03.15).

Prince Harry joins Walk For Britain

Prince Harry has announced he is taking part in a 1,000 mile trek across the UK to raise money for the charity Walking with the Wounded.
The 30-year-old British royal is committing himself to the military charity's Walk of Britain event which starts on August 22 in Scotland and ends in London on October 31 just months after he leaves the army himself.
Harry hopes the event will raise awareness of the difficulties military veterans face when they leave armed services as well as raising much-needed funds for rehabilitation for injured service personnel and community projects.
Speaking at the launch of the Walk of Britain at London's Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Wednesday (18.03.15), Harry said: "Walk of Britain will cover all parts of the country. Walking through the communities in which our service personnel and veterans grew up and now live. In doing so, Walk of Britain will give everyone the opportunity to meet these remarkable men and women ... People up and down the country will get to see first-hand the determination and resolve of those who have served, and in particular those who have been injured or suffer hidden wounds. They will see that whatever their circumstances these men and women are looking to the future. They are looking to employers to give them the chance to keep making a contribution to our communities."
Referring to his own imminent departure from the army after 10 years service, Harry admitted he expects his adjustment from being a soldier to civilian will have its challenges.
He explained: "The public's support for our Armed Forces continues to be extraordinary. However, as the memory of our military commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan fade, we must encourage people to continue supporting our servicemen and women; particularly those who are seeking to transition into civilian life. This process can be challenging, as it is for anyone seeking a new career. As I make this transition myself, I'm determined to do all I can to help others."
Harry previously took part in treks to the North Pole in 2011 and the South Pole in 2013 to raise money and awareness of the charity .
Before he begins the Walk of Britain, Harry - the son of Prince Charles and brother of Prince William - will spend the summer doing volunteer work in Africa.

Queen Elizabeth’s cars being damaged by rain water

Queen Elizabeth's fleet of luxury vintage cars are being damaged because of a leaking roof.
The British monarch's Daimler garage at Buckingham Palace in London is letting in rain water through its glass roof which is dripping onto her extensive collection of expensive vehicles and affecting the body work.
Among the queen's car collection are three Daimlers, three Rolls-Royce vehicles and two Bentleys.
Planning documents filed with Westminster Council and obtained by The Sun newspaper, reveal the garage has not been re-glazed for nearly 90 years.
The planned repairs will be paid for out of tax revenues that go to the monarch through the annual Sovereign Grant.
A Palace spokesman has confirmed the garage needs fixing and are part of a continuous "programme of work".
One of the queen's vintage cars caught the eye of 'Britain's Got Talent' judge Amanda Holden this week.
The ruling royal was driven to her engagement to open a new set of kennels at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home on Tuesday (17.03.15) in her Bentley State Limousine and Amanda was very impressed with the monarch's "wheels".
She posted on Twitter: "Me with the Queens wheels! @BDCH Her majesty did the opening of our new kennels. Proud moment (sic)"

Amanda Holden loves Queen’s wheels

Amanda Holden was impressed with Queen Elizabeth's car when the monarch opened a new set of kennels at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home on Tuesday (17.03.15).
The 'Britain's Got Talent' judge was invited to the event because she is an ambassador for the animal shelter in London and she was very "proud" to have the opportunity to meet the monarch and she couldn't believe how luxurious the queen's Bentley State Limousine is.
In a post on her Twitter account, Amanda said: "Me with the Queens wheels! @BDCH Her majesty did the opening of our new kennels. Proud moment (sic)"
When Amanda was introduced to the 88-year-old royal, she suggested Queen Elizabeth adopt owner-less corgi Beama, the 12-year-old mutt that was introduced to her wearing a Union Flag.
The 'TV' star asked the queen: "Are you are not tempted to take a corgi home?"
To which the queen replied: "Maybe. Not at the moment."
Amanda admitted she was tempted to take an unwanted dog home with her after spending the day at the shelter and she has promised her two daughters they can get a mutt mate for their pooch Rudie soon.
The 44-year-old beauty is quoted by the MailOnline as saying: "I was always a huge fan before I took on the ambassador's role. We already have one dog but I have told my daughters we may well get another one in the autumn. We will see how things go."
The queen - who was accompanied to the event by her husband Prince Philip - owns two corgis Willow and Holly and Candy and Vulcan, two dorgis which are a corgi/dachshund cross breed.
Other stars in attendance were model David Gandy and talk show host Paul O'Grady, both of whom are ambassadors for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Prince William gives woman kiss after Irish Guards’ parade

Prince William gave a kiss to a woman who had previously received a peck from his father Prince Charles during his royal engagement with the Irish Guards on Tuesday (17.03.15).
The Duke of Cambridge and his wife Duchess Catherine went to the regiment's barracks in Aldershot, Hampshire, South East England, to attend the troops' annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.
After the couple watched the two hundred soldiers from the First Battalion Irish Guards marching on the Parade Square and Catherine upheld the 144-year-old royal tradition of presenting shamrocks to the officers and guardsmen, they then met with the soldiers, other guests and families.
Army wife Susan Crittenden - who lives at a nearby barracks - got to meet the prince and showed him a photo of her with his dad Charles when she was introduced to him during a visit to Caterham barracks 13 years ago.
In the picture, Susan, 49, is shown holding her then-two-year-old son Reece - who is now 15 - and revealed the heir-to-the-throne had given her a kiss on the cheek and when she asked William if he would do the same, the royal heartthrob was more than happy to oblige.
According to reports, she said: "I told him I had a kiss from Prince Charles and he said, 'My goodness.' And when I asked him for a kiss I got one. He was very charming."
Catherine - who is eight months pregnant with the couple's second child, a sibling for Prince George - met with several young cadets and told them she was delighted to see so many girls and women involved.
During the meet-and-greet, William, 32, enjoyed a pint of Guinness to mark the celebration of the patron saint of Ireland, while his wife opted for just a glass of water.

Queen Elizabeth meets David Gandy at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home

Queen Elizabeth met with model David Gandy when she opened a new set of kennels at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home on Tuesday (17.03.15).
The British monarch was the guest of honour at the unveiling of the Mary Tealby Kennels - named after the women who founded the London animal shelter in 1860 - and was introduced to various celebrities in attendance including Amanda Holden, Paul O'Grady and fashion hunk Gandy.
The queen grinned broadly as Gandy bowed to shake her hand the 35-year-old star admitted afterwards it was a total "honour" to be introduced to the ruling royal.
In a posting on his Instagram account, he wrote: "An honour to be part of the opening of the new Mary Tealby Kennels at @batterseadogsandcatshome. Even greater honour to meet Her Majesty the Queen (sic)"
Before meeting with the other guests, the queen was introduced to Beama the corgi - the breed of dog she is famous for owning.
The adorable 12-year-old pooch - a recent return to the shelter - was dressed in a Union Flag for the big occasion and presented by Battersea ambassador O'Grady to the queen. His handler Ali Taylor told the monarch he was keen to join the other corgis at her homes.
Taylor said: "He would quite like Windsor Castle. Or Buckingham Palace. He's not really that fussy."
Fellow Battersea ambassador Holden then cheekily asked: "Are you are not tempted to take a corgi home?"
To which the queen replied: "Maybe. Not at the moment."
'Britain's Got Talent' judge Holden asked her husband Prince Philip the same question, prompting the answer: "What Corgi?"
Philip then turned to Gandy, another Battersea supporter, and said: "Have you got a Corgi?"
And the model answered: "No, sir, but I am tempted."
Elizabeth, now 88, owns less dogs now than she used to. Her pack of pooches are now made up of corgis Willow and Holly and two dorgis Candy and Vulcan - who are a corgi/dachshund cross breed.
Before leaving the royal couple were presented with gift bags for their pets filled with toys and treats for their mutts.
As we was handed the gifts, Philip quipped: "Gives new meaning to the phrase doggy bag!"

The couple have touched down in the American capital ahead of their meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House.
The political leader is due to hold informal talks with Charles and Camilla in the oval office.
The 66-year-old heir-to-the-throne will begin his trip with a visit to the National Archives on Wednesday (18.03.15) where he will view the United States' 'Charters of Freedom' and the 1297 version of the Magna Carta - a treaty that is part of the American Bill of Rights and the Constitution and that marks its 800th anniversary this week.
The eco-friendly prince will also deliver a speech to staff of several major companies, government officials and leading environmental organisations about the long-term damage being done to the world's oceans and seas by plastic waste.
Camilla, 67, will also be carrying out some solo duties, one of the highlights being a tour of Washington's Shakespeare Theatre Company.
They are also scheduled to spend a day visiting Kentucky to mark 150th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War and the death of President Abraham Lincoln.
The trip is the couple's third official visit to the US together and British ambassador Sir Peter Westmacott has stated the trip will "showcase the best of the transatlantic relationship" between America and the UK.
