Oscar-winning writer and actor Colin Welland has died aged 81.
The British star, who won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his script for 'Chariots of Fire' in 1982, passed away on Monday (02.11.15) after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for several years, his family has confirmed.
In a statement, which was released via his literary agent Anthony Jones, his family said: "Colin will be desperately missed by his family and friends.
"Alzheimer's is a cruel illness and there have been difficult times but in the end Colin died peacefully in his sleep.
"We are proud of Colin's many achievements during his life but most of all he will be missed as a loving and generous friend, husband, father and granddad."
Colin - who famously used his Oscars acceptance speech to announce: "The British are coming!" - also won a Bafta for playing Mr Farthing in Ken Loach's 1969 movie 'Kes'.
What's more, he enjoyed a successful career on the small screen, appearing as PC David Graham in TV police show 'Z Cars' in the 60s.
The award-winning performer is survived by his wife Patricia, four children and six grandchildren.

Nicole Kidman is reportedly in talks to star in the new 'Wonder Woman' movie.
The Oscar-winning actress is wanted to appear alongside Israeli star Gal Gadot and Chris Pine in the eagerly-awaited new supehero movie from DC Comics, according to The Wrap.
Nicole, 48, is in negotiations over the role of a "high-ranking Amazonian warrior" in the debut solo film for Wonder Woman, who is set to be introduced in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice', which also stars Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill.
The speculation comes shortly after Nicole claimed she doesn't miss the Hollywood scene, having moved to Nashville with her family nine years ago.
She explained: "I don't miss the Hollywood life, definitely not. But I don't think I've ever been a part of that. I still put on a gown and go on the red carpet, and that's when you're all for a moment circling each other, and I know all those people.
"If you're committed to a fame path that's a whole different thing. But for me that's almost like the burden that comes with it. I don't say that complaining, but that's the part that's work so I can do the thing I love."

Glenn Close has been "haunted" by her Norma Desmond role for 20 years.
The 68-year-old actress is preparing to reprise the part of faded screen star Norma when 'Sunset Boulevard' comes to London's West End, having previously done so more than two decades ago, and Glenn has revealed just how important the role has been in the context of her career.
She shared: "When I was approached to do this, I thought it was a gift. I am very thrilled. To play a character and be able to come back to the same character 20 years later, it's going to be another exploration for me.
"I've had 20 years of life, 20 years of my craft and she won't be exactly the same. I'm not too sure what she'll be like. She's been in my psyche. When you've played a great character like that, she becomes part of your fabric."
The American actress explained she's never been able to leave the role of Norma behind.
She said: "She's haunted me since I left her."
The new production is based on the Oscar-winning 1950 film, and Glenn revealed she's been busily preparing for the part.
She explained: "For me, it starts with working out. You need to have strong muscles to project that kind of energy on stage, so you have to be in good shape. I'm getting on the treadmill - it's not something I really love to do but I know how much I will appreciate it.
"You have to take care of your voice. I'm hoping there will be a good E&T (ear and throat) guy to deal with my postnasal drip. You become quite a hypochondriac."

Daniel Craig suffered real-life injuries during his on-screen fight with Dave Bautista.
The 47-year-old actor stars opposite the former mixed martial artist in the new Bond movie 'Spectre', and Daniel has given a behind-the-scenes insight to one of the movie's most dramatic action sequences.
He shared: "We rehearsed for about six weeks on this scene.
"We knew the fight inside out (but) when you're shooting it, it's very, very intense and, you know, you get hurt."
Although Daniel found the scene to be "incredibly exciting" to shoot, it also led to him suffering a serious knee injury, which ultimately led to a delay in filming.
He told ET Canada: "I smacked Dave on the nose, my knee went in it, and I had to get some surgery done, but you gotta laugh because your heartrate is going and it's an incredibly exciting thing to shoot."
Meanwhile, 'Spectre' producer Barbara Broccoli said recently that the film franchise is "planning to hold on to" Daniel for as long as possible.
However, the actor has previously suggested he's prepared to walk away from the coveted role.
Asked if he planned to reprise the part of 007 for a fifth time, Daniel said: "I'd rather break this glass and slash my wrists.
"We're done. All I want to do is move on."

The award-winning performer has admitted that despite enjoying a stellar career on stage and screen, she's forever worried she won't be offered more work.

Despite her concerns, Dame Judi insisted she has no plans to retire.
The 80-year-old actress told Time Out magazine: "I'm not going to retire as long as I can work and as long as I'm asked to. If you can still climb the ladder, then do it."

"I'm not in it, but that would've been nice, wouldn't it?"

Jennifer Lawrence is "ageing like a president".
The Oscar-winning actress - who stars alongside Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth in 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2' - has revealed she loves taking on dramatically different acting roles, and has claimed that her life has taken on a president-like feel.
She said: "I try to keep working so people can see other characters and other things I can do, instead of taking vacation time, and now I'm ageing like a president.
"I hate waking up without a goal or going to sleep without achieving nothing."
Jennifer - who has reprised the role of Katniss Everdeen for the new movie - also admitted she's resisted the temptation to take time off over the last few months.
The 25-year-old star explained: "I remember there have been a few times where I would have loved time off. But I was very aware of how overwhelming these movies and this character was, and that was a big fear of mine signing on to these movies.
"I want people to be able to lose themselves when they're watching a movie and not see the same character."

Antonio Banderas' latest film role tells "essential stories about life itself".
The 55-year-old actor stars as Mario 'Super Mario' Sepúlveda in 'The 33' - which tells the story of the Chilean mining disaster - and he has claimed the survival drama teaches some broader life lessons.
He said: "We have seen movies that we know the outcome of. Movies like 'Titanic' and 'Apollo 13', but the ordeal, the stories, the little details, the nuances - the subtleness of the relationships is very important there.
"It is just giving us simple but essential stories about life itself."
Antonio met 'Super Mario' before he started filming and revealed it was a "great" experience.
He told Today.com: "He gave me a lot of data and information about himself and the situation that they lived, the event.
"And I found, basically, a survivor. A man who since very early in his life has had to struggle to survive. Life gave him an opportunity to use all of that knowledge and skills to save 32 people."
The movie was shot in real mines in Colombia, and Antonio admits he has mixed feelings about the experience.
He shared: "It was kind of miserable. We were shooting in mines, real mines, in Colombia ... it was very good for the movie and very bad for us."

Carey Mulligan thinks it's "crazy" Hollywood has largely ignored the story of the suffrage movement.
The 30-year-old actress stars alongside Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter in the new historical period drama 'Suffragette', and she's amazed that the fight to give women the right to vote has been neglected by the movie business.
She said: "I thought I knew a lot about the suffrage movement and I didn't. When I started reading the script, I had my eyes opened to a lot of things. And it kind of just struck me that it being so crazy that the story had never been told.
"So to finally bring the story to the screen was a massive deal to me."
However, Carey admitted that the problem is not restricted to the film industry.
She told CNN: "It's the fault of our education. I mean, I definitely didn't learn about the suffrage movement at school. There was a tiny paragraph dedicated to it in my history book.
"You know, at the time - when it all happened - it was documented by men. The newspapers were run by men and they were controlled by the parliament. So some of the stuff that happened went completely undocumented."
