Mary Berry to host Chelsea Flower Show

Mary Berry is set to host part of the Chelsea Flower Show coverage for the BBC.
The 83-year-old television presenter and food writer recently made her return to television on BBC show ‘Britain’s Best Home Cook’, almost two years after she last fronted ‘The Great British Bake Off’ for the channel – before it moved to rival broadcaster Channel 4 in a decision which saw Mary leave the show behind.
But she will now have even more work on her plate as she has been lined up as one of the presenters for the coverage of London’s Chelsea Flower Show, which will be held for five days between May 22 and 26.
The BBC coverage of the event is said to be spanning 15 hours over the five days, but according to The Sun’s Bizarre TV column, a whopping 19 presenters have been hired for the job.
Jo Whiley and Nick Knowles are also set to host parts of the show, whilst Jennifer Saunders will get her own flower based programme called ‘The A-Z of Chelsea’, and BBC News’ Sophie Raworth will be heading up the launch.
A source told the publication: "It does seem like an over-the-top number of people just to narrate a load of flowers.
"Why an event so exclusive requires this many presenters is baffling. They’re starring in, on average, less than an hour each.
"It will be the easiest few quid they’ve ever earned. If it’s good weather it might as well be a holiday."
BBC One will be showing half an hour of coverage on the first three days of the event, with hour-long shows taking place all week on BBC Two with Joe Swift from ‘Gardeners’ World’ and Monty Don, as well as 45-minute shows by Nicki Chapman and James Wong.
A highlights show will be broadcast at the end of the week.
