Hollyoaks ‘beaming with pride’ after Broadcast Awards win

‘Hollyoaks’ bosses are "beaming with pride" after the show won Best Soap or Continuing Drama at the Broadcast Awards.
The Channel 4 show scooped the award at the ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House last night (05.02.20), and there was a nod to Ste Hay’s (Kieron Richardson) far-right radicalisation plot.
A message on the awards show’s website reads: "’Hollyoaks’ is the soap most willing to take on challenging issues and do them justice, with clever character development."
It also said the show’s producer Lime Pictures "took great pride" in a "difficult" flagship episode on far-right extremism, which saw Ste finally turn against extremist characters Jonny Baxter (Ray Quinn) and Stuart Sumner (Chris Simmons), who was later pushed off a cliff to his death by his son Sid Sumner (Billy Price).
Following the recognition, a message on the ‘Oaks’ Instagram account thanked their fans for their support.
It read: "#Hollyoaks have just won the award for Best Soap or Continuing Drama at the #BroadcastAwards! BEAMING WITH PRIDE! Thanks to all our fans, you truly are the best! #CelebrateDifference #DontFilterFeelings #Winners #TeamHollyoaks (sic)"
Another read: "Woohoo! What a night… #Hollyoaks have won Best Soap at the #BroadcastAwards! #Winners #BigNight #Proud #CelebrateDifference (sic)"
Several ‘Hollyoaks’ stars were delighted with the win.
Chelsee Healey – who plays Goldie McQueen – wrote: "Congratulations TEAMMMMM (sic)"
Alex Fletcher (Diane Hutchinson) posted: "Brilliant"
Kieron’s hard-hitting plot came to a head in November with an hour-long special, and while the 34-year-old star had "a lot of trepidation" about playing out the storyline initially, he felt "sad" when it ended.
He said at the time: "It’s kind of sad that it’s all over really. It’s a story that initially I was a bit nervous and wary of taking on, and now that it’s over, and literally the final bits are going to be on television, its quite sad.
"Going in to it, I had a lot of trepidation, but coming out the other side, it’s now one of my most favourite storylines I’ve ever done.
"I am quite sad that it’s over but the most important thing is the message that it’s brought and hopefully it’s highlighted an issue that needed to be talked about."
