Gangs of London becomes Sky Atlantic’s second-biggest original drama launch

‘Gangs of London’ has become Sky Atlantic’s second-biggest original drama launch.
The new action-crime drama series has proven to be a big hit with TV viewers, with 2.2 million people watching the show in over seven days.
Reflecting on the success, Sky Studios boss Cameron Roach said: "We are delighted by the response to ‘Gangs of London’ and to have brought Gareth Evans’ unique cinematic vision to the small screen for the first time.
"This epic saga, with family at its heart and visceral action-packed fight sequences has taken audiences on an immersive journey into the underbelly of London’s modern-day criminal underworld.
"The record-breaking results are testament to Sky’s ongoing commitment to innovation and championing the very best of bold, British drama."
The series has already been compared to the BBC hit ‘Peaky Blinders’.
But Joe Cole – who plays John Shelby in ‘Peaky Blinders’ and Sean Wallace in ‘Gangs of London’ – thinks the two shows are, in fact, quite distinct.
Speaking about his latest TV project, he told Digital Spy: "It’s contemporary. It’s a writer-director-led show, so there’s a real visceral element to it, and a real cinematic element to the show.
"And it’s an ensemble. It’s a show in a multicultural, cosmopolitan London. There are different characters and different pathways and different journeys. ‘Peaky’ is a single-character show, really."
Meanwhile, Gareth Evans recently revealed ‘Gangs of London’ could be set to return for a second series.
Speaking about plans for another series, the director said: "I think they [Sky and producers] are currently figuring that out.
"I think everyone’s waiting to see what the reaction is to this first season. Naturally, there are certain story threads that are hanging in the air a little bit by the end of the first one.
"So obviously there’s potential and space for that to continue.
"But I think it’s all it’s all a case of like, wait and see at this point. It’s a little too early in the day to kind of like, really sort of say too much about any of the any of the plans."
