Amar Latif: Celebrity MasterChef was terrifying

Celebrity MasterChef’s first-ever blind contestant, Amar Latif, has admitted taking part in the show was one of the "most terrifying" experiences of his life.

The 45-year-old TV presenter – who lost 95 per cent of his sight by the age of 18 – has admitted he still isn’t sure how he managed to compete in the BBC cook-off.

He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "It was one of the most terrifying two weeks of my life.

"I worked and worked and worked. I can’t believe how I did it."

Amar joins the show as the first-ever blind contestant after he lost his sight due to an incurable condition called retinis pigmentosa, and while he will have a sighted guide to navigate the kitchen, he did all the preparation and cooking himself.

It comes after Amar had previously turned down the chance to appear on the cooking show as he knew his culinary skills weren’t up to par, because he has lived off microwave meals in the past.

But he changed his mind after meeting with the production team, and was able to get through the competition by having his kit and ingredients "super organised".

Now, the ‘Travelling Blind’ host is able to expand his skills in the kitchen after learning how to properly plate up his dishes.

He added: "Because I was blind, I thought you just put stuff on the plate and eat it. I didn’t realise there was this world of presenting food in such a nice way.

"The show has changed my life. I invite friends home, and make lovely things and I present it well."

But Amar admitted some viewers at home won’t believe it is all his own hard work.

He said: "They won’t realise a blind guy is able to produce presentable food."
