Toby Jones feels ‘storm of publicity’ surrounding Sherlock

Toby Jones didn’t realise the "storm of publicity" that comes with starring in ‘Sherlock’.
The Hollywood star – who is famous for his roles in ‘Dad’s Army’, ‘Frost/Nixon’, ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise and two ‘Captain America’ films – was nabbed to play a baddie in the second episode of the new three-part detective series but has admitted nothing could prepare him for the amount of praise he’d get for the nasty role.
Speaking exclusively to BANG Showbiz at the UK premiere of his latest movie ‘Tale of Tales’ at the Curzon Mayfair in London on Wednesday (01.06.16), he said he’s enjoying his time on set and added: "I’m filming it right now, it’s going very well.
"Screenwriter Mark Gatiss texted me and said ‘Oh I’ve written this part with you in mind, would you do it?’
"And I said Yes, not knowing quite the storm of publicity that greets everything that’s happened.
"So I had no idea, but it’s been really good fun and everybody seems really happy."
Toby is filming scenes in Cardiff with ‘Sherlock’ star Benedict Cumberbatch – who has been spotted in the city sporting a beard this week – and Martin Freeman, who plays Doctor John Watson.
Despite the series being inspired by the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Toby says the BBC series is a very different take on the investigative thriller stories by co-creator, writer and executive Steven Moffat and executive producer Mark.
He added: "I’ve never done anything like that and in a way this isn’t Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, it’s Mark Gattis and Steven Moffat."
Bosses have remained tight-lipped on who the British star will play, however, Moffat revealed the character is truly iconic in the Holmes pantheon of stories.
He said: "I’m delighted to have Toby Jones on board, bringing to life one of Doyle’s finest villains."
And Mark – who also stars as Sherlock’s brother Mycroft Holmes in the drama – added: "We’re thrilled to welcome one of our finest actors to the ‘Sherlock’ family. I know Toby will embrace the part with true relish!"
