Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell developed stigmata in the mid-2000s

Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell once developed “stigmata” when the band broke big in the mid-2000s.

In a joint chat with drummer Andy Burrows, the singer recalled a bizarre health incident that happened as the group were enjoying huge success with their self-titled second album, which was released in 2006.

In the interview with ContactMusic.com, Johnny turned to Andy and said: “Do you remember when I got the stigmata?”

To which Andy replied: “Oh my god, I do remember!”

Stigmata refers to sudden, unexplained wounds or bleeding that resemble the crucifixion injuries of Jesus Christ.

When asked how it happened, Johnny admitted he had “no idea”.

Recalling his conversation with a doctor, he recounted: “I went to the doctor, ‘cause I had these red marks, and I said to him, ‘What is going on here?’ He just shrugged and said, ‘Religious ecstasy?’

“He thought I might have got this infection, and it grew out like a ring.”

The Golden Touch band are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their self‑titled second album with a new tour, performing the record – produced largely by studio legend Chris Thomas – in full.

Listening back, Johnny says he feels more relaxed about the era now, and believes the LP – which contains hits like America, In The Morning and Before I Fall To Pieces – has its place in the pantheon of classic rock albums.

Andy added it was a “good effort”, while Johnny said Chris’ studio wizardry helped define its sound.

Johnny said: “Honestly, one thing I think, listening back to it now, is I really like it. I see where it fits into the catalogue of rock ’n’ roll – I kinda get it. Especially with Chris Thomas; sonically, he had his stamp on stuff.”

Chris Thomas, 79, has worked with an array of iconic bands, including Pink Floyd, Roxy Music, Pulp, INXS and the Pretenders.

The November tour will see Razorlight’s four classic members – Johnny, Andy, Björn Ågren and Carl Dalemo – perform the Razorlight album in full.
