Cara Delevingne was determined to establish her own unique sound as a musician.
The 34-year-old star released Not Normal, her debut album, in September, and Cara has opened up about her creative process, explaining that she wanted the record to “come from a pure place of emotion”.
Cara – who has previously enjoyed success as a model and as an actress – told Bustle: “I wanted this to sound like nothing else that exists, and I want this to come from a pure place of emotion: this is what I’m going through.
“Honestly, a lot of these songs were way crazier. We fully set sail, and then we were like, ‘Maybe we should draw it back in a bit.’ But that was important because I felt like I was alone and going through something no one had ever gone through before — that’s a pretty selfish way to think of it, but that was how I wanted it to sound.”
Cara felt anxious about introducing herself as a musician.
But the London-born star refused to let her nervousness stop her from following her music ambitions.
She said: “I 100 per cent worried about [putting myself out there]. I just tried to focus on what I wanted to make and what was an accurate portrayal of that.
“Nothing like that has ever stopped me before, I suppose. I will never stop making art because of other people’s opinions. Imagine if artists stopped making music because of others’ opinions. It would be so bad.
“Even if it was going to be bad art to people, I’d rather make bad art than none at all. I have to create — it’s really important for me, for my psyche. If no one sees it, it doesn’t matter.”
Meanwhile, Cara previously claimed that her “whole life” had been building up to the release of her debut album.
Speaking to ELLE magazine, Cara shared: “I’ve been working on it for three years. It’s something I’ve put so much time into and I actually feel like I’ve been working on it for my whole life because it’s all been leading up to this.”
