Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell jokes about rock star excess giving him ‘stigmata’

Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell has claimed he once developed “stigmata” – and joked it may have been caused by taking too many drugs.

In a joint chat with drummer Andy Burrows, the singer recalled a bizarre moment from the noughties rock band’s early days.

He told ContactMusic.com: “Do you remember when I got the stigmata?”

Stigmata refers to sudden, unexplained wounds or bleeding that resemble the crucifixion injuries of Jesus Christ.

When asked how it happened, he admitted he had “no idea”.

Recalling his conversation with a doctor, he recounted: “I said to him, ‘what’s going on?’ He said, ‘maybe just ecstasy.'”

He said the wound “grew out like a ring”, laughing as he insisted: “It actually happened.”

The Golden Touch band are marking 20 years of their self‑titled second album with a new tour, performing the record – produced largely by studio legend Chris Thomas – in full.

Listening back, Johnny says he feels more relaxed about the era now, calling the album “pretty good” and praising its place in rock history.

Andy added it was a “good effort”, while Johnny said Chris’ sonic stamp helped define its sound.

He said: “I feel a bit more chill about it, to be honest. Yeah, that’s alright. It’s pretty good. It’s not bad.”

Johnny continued: “Honestly, one thing I think, listening back to it now, is I really like it. I see where it fits into the catalogue of rock ’n’ roll – I kinda get it. Especially with Chris Thomas; sonically, he had his stamp on stuff.”

The November tour will see Razorlight’s four classic members – Johnny, Andy, Björn Ågren and Carl Dalemo – perform the Razorlight album in full. Find tickets at www.razorlightofficial.com.
