Allan Cubitt claims the camera "lingered too intimately" on murder scenes in the first series of 'The Fall'.
The creator of the controversial TV thriller - which was accused of glamorising violence against women - has confessed director Jakob Verbruggen may have spent too much time depicting the killer's brutal crimes.
He said: "It may be that the camera lingered too intimately on certain things..."
Allan has now taken over as director of the second series, which sees the return of 'Fifty Shades of Grey' actor Jamie Dornan as murderer Paul Spector and Gillian Anderson as Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson, and he's admitted he would've made very different decisions had he been behind the camera for the first series.
He told Radio Times magazine: "There are many, many things that I would have done differently. I mean, I was very involved with the editing, but you work with the material you've got."
Series two of the BBC Two drama - which is set in Belfast, Northern Ireland - is set to air later this month and Gillian has defended it against criticism.
She explained of the way in which Paul's character is seen laying out his victims: "From my perspective, he's posing these women as if they are posing for him - in seduction.
"It's not a fashion magazine shoot type thing. It is what turns him on."

'EastEnders' actor Adam Woodyatt "wouldn't buy it" if Ian Beale was his daughter's murderer.
The 46-year-old star - who has played Ian on the BBC One soap since it first began in 1985 - admits he doesn't know who is responsible for the murder of Lucy Beale, but insists he doesn't think it would be believable for his character to be guilty.
He said: "It's possible. But if that happened, I'd have a long chat with our executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins to try and find out why. I don't think so, though. I wouldn't buy that one."
The identity of Lucy's killer has been a mystery since her murder in April this year and is set to be revealed during the show's upcoming 30th anniversary in February 2015, and Adam has confessed the storyline has been one of the most challenging he's ever been involved in.
He told Radio Times magazine: "On an emotional level, nothing has come close to this. Dominic has given me a brilliant storyline which has, at times, been very challenging. But the whole point of soaps is to portray real life and this is what happens to some families.
"Grief can be very raw. And I can't use a tear stick, so when Ian's cried, I've really cried."
Adam added: "As far as the character of Lucy goes, Hetti Bywater might have only played her for a short period of time, but I've known the character for 20 years. So it has been distressing."

Spencer Matthews reportedly has a new girlfriend.
The 'Made In Chelsea' star - who has failed relationships with co-stars Lucy Watson and Louise Thompson under his belt - is said to have fallen for socialite Lauren Hutton, with whom he attended a number of Halloween parties this weekend.
Spencer has reportedly been begging the brunette beauty for a date for months and, although she was initially wary of the known womaniser, she now appears to be smitten.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "It took Lauren a while to warm to Spencer, thanks to his reputation with the ladies.
"He's been pursuing her for ages but she just wasn't interested. She thought he was too much of a player. But after giving him a chance and spending a bit of time with him, she finally caved in."
Lauren may be in for a tough time if she is hoping for a monogamous relationship, however, as Spencer, 26, was caught cheating on both Louise and Lucy in the past.
But the ladies man has confessed he's hoping to put his bad-boy days behind him now he's getting a bit older.
Speaking earlier this year, he said: "I can't make any promises, but I'm trying to be a nicer person.
"I just think it's time to grow up - I'm 26-years-old now - so for me gallivanting around being a 'lothario' as it's being referred to, is just a bit ... I'm trying to be a bit more serious."

The pop star is currently appearing on the BBC One ballroom competition and has grown close to many of her fellow competitors, which includes TV presenter Caroline Flack, The Saturdays star Frankie Bridge, Blue singer Simon Webbe and Judy Murray.
Pixie plans to stay in contact with the other stars because they have all had such a great time together.
Pixie said: "We all get on well. We have the whole of Friday and Saturday to hang out while we're rehearsing and then the show, so we spend a lot of time with each other. Afterwards, we always go out together and celebrate. It's such a nice environment and everyone's supportive. I really hope we stay friends for life.
"'Strictly...' is like no other experience I've ever had. It's extremely exciting on Saturday when you do the live show. It's hard fitting it in with everything else in my schedule, but I'm loving it. It's really fun."
The 23-year-old singer also has plenty of praise for her professional dance partner Trent Whiddon, admitting he has been incredible to work with.
Speaking to HELLO! magazine, she shared: "Trent is so good. He's an amazing dancer and so patient. I love his choreography. It's an honour to learn his dances every week."

The 'X Factor' reject - who was dumped by her boyfriend Craig Wiffen after it was revealed she'd had a fling with fellow contestant Stevi - is reported to have reached out to him following the break-up and even declared her love for him in the hope of winning him back.
An insider told The Sun newspaper: "Chloe rang Stevi on Sunday just before The X Factor results show.
"She was in tears and saying she wanted them to meet up and talk things through and try and make another go of things.
"She even went as far as to say she loved him."
Stevi - who has made his fondness for the blonde beauty clear in the past - has been left confused over her actions.
The source added: "Stevi is a nice guy but he just doesn't know how to take all of this. He just wants to meet a girl who is in to him and to settle down."
Craig is said to have ended his relationship with Chloe-Jasmine after Stevi revealed on Saturday night's (01.11.14) episode of 'The X Factor' that she had told him she was no longer in a relationship before their romp in a hotel.
He also penned a nasty message on his Twitter account branding her an alcoholic - which has now been deleted.

Denise Welch read out a self-penned ode to Lynda Bellingham at her funeral today (03.11.14).
The 'Loose Women' star delivered the poem she had written in memory of the late actress - who passed away in October, aged 66, after losing her battle with colon cancer - during a touching service at St Bartholomew's Church in Crewkerne, Somerset, this afternoon.
Guests - who included Lynda's close friend Christopher Biggins, who wore a pink suit because he "knew it would put a smile on her face" - flooded the church to pay their last respects to the well-loved star and broke out in applause following Denise's heartfelt ode.
She said: "I'll miss you Lynda very much as will everybody here
"There is no need to say how much you are loved, as today that is abundantly clear
"If you are looking down from wherever you are I am sure you will be having a hoot at the odd bods that loved you so dearly like Biggins in that bloody pink suit
"Your humour is what I will remember and the dirtiest laugh known to man."
In addition to a touching tribute from her sister, Lynda's husband Michael Pattemore also shared details of his first encounter with his wife, which coincidentally was 10 years to the day as he spoke at the service.
He said: "This is going to be tough. While I was preparing this speech I wanted dates and times to be exact. What I discovered was devastating. It was on this very day 3 November 2004, 1.30 in the afternoon ten years ago that I first met Lynda.
"Can I go back to that day? I can remember that moment when we first met as if it was yesterday."
Her coffin - which was covered in white flowers - was carried by husband, her sons Michael and Robert and her stepson Bradley.
Among the mourners were her former 'Loose Women' co-stars Jane McDonald, Kate Thornton, Lisa Maxwell, Andrea McLean and Coleen Nolan, actress Maureen Lipman, 'Coronation Street' star Helen Worth and actor Michael Redfern - who played her on screen husband in the long-running series of Oxo adverts for which she became synonymous with.
The service was led by Lynda's friend, the former Archdeacon of London Peter Delaney MBE, and Maxwell gave a reading of The Epistle to the Romans, while 'Only Fools And Horses' star Sue Holderness read Shakespeare's Sonnet 116.
Lynda had asked her spouse Michael to organise a funeral which was full of fun and he fulfilled her wish by creating a service that mimicked The Royal Variety Performance.
The actress was buried as fireworks were let off at her graveside in keeping with her wish that her friends and family "have a party when I'm gone".

Lynda Bellingham was buried today (03.11.14) as fireworks were let off at her graveside.
The actress - who passed away in October after losing her battle with colon cancer - was laid to rest at St Bartholomew's Church in Crewkerne, Somerset, and as her coffin was committed to the earth at a nearby cemetery several fireworks exploded in the sky in keeping with her wish that her friends and family "have a party when I'm gone".
Her coffin - which was covered in white flowers - was carried by her husband Michael Pattemore, sons Michael and Robert and her stepson Bradley to and from the church which was full of her famous friends.

Actor-and-broadcaster Gyles Brandreth read out a hilarious tribute to his friend, during which he described her as "sexy", "funny" and a person who showed everyone "how to live".
Recalling how he met 40 years ago through Biggins, he said: "I liked her at once. I couldn't not. She was so funny and so sexy. Every guy who met her fancied her. In fact I say especially gay men fancied her. She would be the first to admit that when she came to men she didn't always get it right. Her first marriage was a blip, her second was a trauma, although it brought her her greatest gifts in life - her two sons. Then came Mike. We were suspicious at first. Some of us were jealous. But then there was that lovely happy wedding day and we met you.
"We were so happy that you made Lynda so happy, and we were so happy therefore for you both.
"I don't think I've known anyone who was more happy than Lynda. She showed us how to live, and then in her last months she showed us how to die; with grace and courage and humour and acceptance."
Other tributes came from her sister Jean Bellingham, Lipman - who admitted she would miss Lynda's honking laughter and her high campery" - and former 'Loose Women' panellist McDonald, who struggled to hold back tears as she remembered her pal.
Referring to her husband and sons, McDonald said: "She loved you so much. That's what Lynda had in abundance, she had love.
"You only had to ring Lynda and she would bring you out of it. We all know that Lynda was a great actress but she was so much more.
"I just wanted to say how much she brought to our little show. She hated it with a passion to be honest. She couldn't stand it you know, but we all loved her. She just had this passion for life and the thing about Lynda Bellingham she lived three lives more than any of us. She knew how to live. She really did."
Biggins paid a moving tribute to his pal and and ended it by reading the poem 'Codicil', written by Julia Deakin, which had been given to him by his "comedy guru" Lipman.
Among the hymns sang was 'Away In A Manger', which was poignantly chosen because of Lynda's wish to spend one last Christmas with her family, a desire which influenced her decision to stop having cancer treatment.
Outside the church hundreds of fans gathered to pay their respects to Lynda and were able to listen to the service via speakers placed outside.

Steve Backshall would rather have a loyal pet dog to a girlfriend.
The 'Strictly Come Dancing' contestant has joked that he would prefer to have some loveable mutts instead of a girlfriend, but admitted that there are two actresses who he might choose over a canine friend.
When asked whether he is more of a cat or dog lover, the 'Deadly 60' star exclaimed: "Dog all the way. I'd rather have a couple of hounds than a girlfriend."
However, the 41-year-old singleton hinted that he does have his eye on two famous women in particular, revealing that 'The Devil Wears Prada' actress Emily Blunt and 'Gone Girl' star Rosamund Pike would be his "dream dinner dates."
When he was later questioned about whether he has any recurring dreams, the pair were once again mentioned, as he quipped: "Mostly Emily Blunt or Rosamund Pike!"
The naturalist and wildlife expert - who received 26 points for his Charleston with Ola Jordan last weekend - also revealed that he once had an unlikely snog with a furry friend.
Far from the stunning stars he dreams about, when asked about his most memorable kiss, he told You magazine: "I had a baby chimp go in for a pash once, does that count?"

Jack Walton believes the Fright Night theme was the reason he was eliminated from 'The X Factor'.
The 18-year-old pop hopeful was kicked off the show after receiving the least amount of votes from the public following his cover of Leona Lewis' single 'Bleeding Love' on Saturday night (01.11.14).
Jack - who was mentored by Mel B - claims he was given mixed messages about what to do with his performance which affected him on the night.
During an interview on 'This Morning', he said: "I did feel confident but I was mixed because obviously it's a themed night so everyone wants you to be out (there) having fun and not taking it as serious but then again they were asking for an emotional performance. So it was a bit of a weird mix from having a girl come over and bite my neck to giving a serious performance. It was hard to get in the right vibe."
Jack also wishes he had ignored some of the advice he was given by the judging panel and stuck to his own ideas about what sort of artist he is.
He explained: "The thing about it is when you come to a show like this you're surrounded by so many successful people and people that know what they're talking about, or that's what you think as soon as you meet them. You think, 'I best listen to whatever you say and that's the best thing.' But I don't think that's the case really, I think you've got to be really true to yourself."
Jack wasn't shocked when he was told by host Dermot O'Leary he was leaving the competition because he had a feeling on Saturday that his time was up.
He said: "Do you know what's really weird on the Saturday night before I went on - and I don't believe in weird feelings or anything like that - but I looked at it and thought it's my time to go, how weird is that? When it happened, I told them before, I had a weird feeling."
On Sunday night (02.11.14) Lola Saunders left 'The X Factor' after the judges couldn't reach a majority decision on whether to eliminate her or Stereo Kicks and it was revealed she had fewer votes than the boy band when it went to Deadlock.
