Melanie Hill is to join the cast of 'Coronation Street'.
The 53-year-old actress is set to star in the ITV soap as Cathy Matthews, a woman who befriends Roy Cropper, and has admitted it is "a dream come true".
She said: "I'm chuffed to bits to be joining the cast of my favourite soap. I and my family grew up watching it and to actually be working on it is a dream come true."
Cathy, who is the owner of the allotment next to Roy and Sharif's plot, is set to embark on a friendship with the cafe owner, who recently lost his wife Hayley in a heartbreaking storyline.
Speaking about Melanie and her character, producer Stuart Blackburn said: "We are delighted that Melanie Hill has agreed to join us and take on the role. Familiar I'm sure to our audience, Melanie is an incredible actress who I know will soon propel Cathy to the heart of 'Coronation Street'.
"Recently widowed, Cathy is an engaging yet sometimes chaotic woman. Though her indecision can drive her friends mad, behind the vulnerable front is a woman who truly does have a heart of gold.
"Gentle, kind and intelligent she has more to offer than she knows and in Roy she'll find a friend who will ultimately bring out the best in her."

Ricky Rayment was planning to propose to Jessica Wright before they broke up.
The 'Only Way Is Essex' stars parted ways in November but Jess has revealed her former boyfriend had picked out a ring and was thinking about popping the question before their messy split.
In an episode of the ITVBe show that aired last night (22.02.15), she said: "Everyone needs to stop blaming his age - that's not the reason we broke up.
"I heard that he'd picked out a ring for me and that he was going to propose. If he really is such a little kid then why would have done all of that?"
Whilst Ricky has started dating 'Geordie Shore's Marnie Simpson, Jess insists she is still single but has had a "cheeky snog".
When quizzed by Gemma Collins, she admitted: "Obviously I have had a cheeky snog! But there's no way I'm going to rush into a relationship with anyone.
"I'm single so I have definitely have been enjoying myself - but I wouldn't plaster it all over the internet like some people."
Meanwhile, the new couple - who met at a National Television Awards after-party last month - have officially confirmed they are dating.
As well as being snapped kissing at a London nightclub, Ricky recently took to Instagram to post a photograph of his new girlfriend, writing alongside the picture: "How gorgeous is my gf @marniegshore #stunner. (sic)"

Matthew Gravelle felt like he "really was on trial" when filming 'Broadchurch'.
The 38-year-old actor - who plays Joe Miller in the ITV drama - has admitted he felt as though he was in the dock himself whilst shooting the dramatic scenes.
He shared: "It was a strange experience because I was kept away from the other actors for the first scenes. But I then found I was keeping myself away from people quite a bit.
"It worked well because it increased the tension. When we finally filmed the verdict scenes, and the actor playing the court clerk said, 'Do you find the defendant, Joseph Michael Miller, guilty or not guilty?' my heart was racing.
"I felt like I really was on trial. We filmed both a guilty and a not guilty verdict, so it was interesting to see the different reactions."
The 38-year-old actor's character will hear the jury's verdict in tonight's (23.02.15) episode, after he was accused of killing Danny Latimer during last year's series.
And Matthew - who revealed his cast mates passed him notes into the dock to keep him amused during the long filming hours - thinks it was a "relief" not having to keep any more secrets after having to stay quiet for "months and months".
He added to The Sun newspaper: "It was a relief when we finally filmed the verdict scenes. I've had to keep it a secret until now, so it's been months and months.
"I'm good at secrets though. Obviously for the first series I couldn't tell anyone I was the murderer.
"Then I couldn't tell anyone I was in the second series until it was on, and I haven't been able to say whether the jury finds my character guilty or not."
The 'Broadchurch' series two finale will air tonight (23.02.15) at 9pm on ITV.

Simon Cowell has splashed out £10,000 on a Vespa.
The 'X Factor' boss is reported to have purchased a brand new white scooter to help him get around town while avoiding London's busy traffic.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "Si ordered the limited edition Italian scooter after having one briefly in Miami.
"He has a big car collection but this time he thought he'd spend some cash on a scooter."
The 55-year-old star was previously spotted riding around the city of Miami, Florida - where he owns a home with girlfriend Lauren Silverman - on one of the vehicles, which can reach speeds up of up to 60 miles per hour.
However, the couple will have to stick to more traditional methods of transport when looking after 12-month-old son Eric.
Meanwhile, rapper Snoop Dogg has revealed he has had a number of conversations with Simon about joining the judging panel of 'The X Factor'.
Speaking about replacing one of the current judges - Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Louis Walsh or Mel B - on the ITV talent show in the future, Snoop said: "Never rule out me being judge, I have had more than one discussion with Simon."

Patsy Kensit is only proud of "a handful" of her TV and film roles.
The 46-year-old actress has starred in 'Holby City' and 'Emmerdale' as well as movies such as 'Lethal Weapon 2' but feels embarrassed by a lot of the productions in which she has appeared, leading her to become more picky as she has got older.
She admitted: "I used to take the wrong movie roles because I came from nothing and economically it was good for me. But when you do that, you sell yourself to the devil. I can think of only a handful of films and TV roles that I'm proud of. Now I'm selective about what I do."
However, the 'Celebrity Big Brother' contestant now feels much more positive about her self-worth after what she describes as "a tough couple of years," during which she split from husband DJ Jeremy Healy, and underwent a hysterectomy after cancerous cysts were found on her ovaries.
She said: "I've been through a tough couple of years and felt as if I'd been on a treadmill for decades.
"But now that I've regained my health and self-esteem and reclaimed the power over my own life, I'm where I should be. I'm strong and fearless and feel better physically than I did at 20.
"One lesson I've learnt since reaching my 40s is not to care what people think of me any more - and to give myself permission to draw a line under my past."

Jacqueline Jossa claims her daughter "swam up" to her when she arrived at the end of the actress' water birth.
The 'EastEnders' actress and her partner Dan Osborne welcomed baby Ella Selina into the world last week and the 22-year-old beauty was so pleased she decided to deliver the tot in a birthing pool because it helped her with her labour and was more serene for Elle.
Describing the moment Ella entered the world, Jacqueline said: "It was like she just swam up to us. She was given straight to me and it was just amazing.
"I remember thinking, 'Wow I did good, I can't believe I actually just did that.'
"Then I saw her big tuft of dark hair, I could hear Daniel crying behind me but it was strange, it was like I couldn't even cry as I was so shocked.
"I was just looking at her thinking, 'What the Hell? That's my baby. And she looks just like me!' IT was amazing."
Afterwards, Jacqueline was pleased she decided to have a water birth because it helped her cope with the birth.
In a joint interview with the new issue of OK! magazine, the actress said: "Having a water birth was amazing. I can't imagine not having it. I don't know how people can have a baby on a bed. I don't see how that works gravity-wise."
Dan added: "She was in the water for about four hours. Jackie's hands and feet were like a prune and my hands were wrinkled up."
Jacqueline also revealed her screams during the labour helped her when it came the final stages when Ella was ready to enter the world.
She explained: "I moaned and groaned the whole way through but during the last part when I was pushing, I felt the need to scream to get the power to do it. I knew I'd scream as I'm dramatic. I thought I'd be crying and screaming but it was more like a manly scream.
"Dan was holding on to me, squeezing my arms and helping me push as well."

'Emmerdale' actress Nicola Wheeler refused to quit a storyline in which her character had a miscarriage despite being pregnant herself.
The 40-year-old actress, who plays Nicola King in the ITV soap, is expecting her first child with partner Matt and has confessed she was offered the chance to quit the emotional storyline but decided to go ahead with it.
She shared: "'Emmerdale' would have changed the storyline if I wasn't OK with it, which was really nice. But you have a responsibility.
"Being pregnant is my private life but I'm hired as an actor to perform what they give me.
"And I do think it's an important part of pregnancy to show because it is devastating.
"I've had friends who have had miscarriages and it's a really tough time to go through."
Nicola - who announced last week that she is nearly nine months pregnant - went on to explain that her character is to experience even more heartbreak.
She told The Sun newspaper: "On top of that, when Nicola is trying for another baby she gets the worst news - her body is going through early menopause."
The blonde beauty admits that while she made the choice to go ahead with the storyline, she is concerned it could affect her unborn baby.
She explained: "There's an element of you that thinks, 'If I'm doing a not-so-happy storyline, is that affecting my body or my baby?'
Nicola added: "I think it was difficult for the actors in the scenes with me because I am there talking about losing a child, yet they can obviously see I am every much pregnant."

Charlie Sims won't propose to Ferne McCann until they've moved in together.
The 'Only Way Is Essex' star has revealed he won't pop the question to his co-star and girlfriend of five years until they have their own home and have lived together for a while.
He said: "We're nearly five years into our relationship. People are like, 'You need to put a ring on it!' But we need to share a home first. I'm not into getting engaged before we live with each other, it's not realistic. But getting a mortgage is so expensive and we need to save up."
The 24-year-old deli owner went on to admit he'd like to move out of his parents house soon as both he and Ferne are getting older now.
He continued: "I want to move out, get engaged and get married. It's all in my head. And Ferne is 25 this year - she's getting older! I'm the toy boy."
Charlie also opened up about his upcoming return to TOWIE, having taken a break from the show last year.
He explained: "I'm always anxious before we start filming. I haven't had the best of times in the past, but now it's going to be different. I had time out to get myself back together. I'm feeling strong in who I am, I know who I'm with and I know who my friends are."
Speaking about his decision to take a step back from the ITVBe show, he added to Star magazine: "I was having problems with my relationship and my personal life, so I needed time away. Taking a step back took a lot of pressure off me and Ferne. This is probably the strongest we've ever been."

David Beckham wants to go adventuring with Bear Grylls.
The retired soccer star enjoyed his trip to the Amazon for documentary 'Into the Unknown' and is keen to do more risky survival missions.
Bear said: "I spoke to David a few months ago about a jungle adventure he did in Brazil and he feels like he's dipped his toes in the water of adventure and wants to do more.
"He's physical, willing to learn and wants challenges in his life, so he'd be great."
As well as David, One Direction hunk Harry Styles is also keen to get involved with one of Bear's tough expeditions.
Bear added: "Harry Styles is interested in doing an adventure. Enthusiasm is a key element of a survivor and he's got that. He's also willing to work hard and he's good fun."
Having travelled with many stars over the years, Bear would be most confident that Channing Tatum could help save his life.
He told heat magazine: "I think Channing Tatum was a great person to take out. He was strong physically and mentally, he laughed at himself and he had a great attitude and physicality. I got him to backflip out of a plane and he just got on with it. I would trust him a lot."
