Supersonic director Mat Whitecross making Coldplay film

‘Supersonic’ director Mat Whitecross’ next documentary will be on Coldplay.
The filmmaker’s movie on Oasis is now out and has received critical acclaim for telling the story of Noel and Liam Gallagher’s journey to becoming the biggest band in the world.
Whitecross has joined Coldplay on their ‘A Head Full of Dreams Tour’ to film their live shows and the band on the road and he wants his next film to focus on the ‘Fix You’ hitmakers’ 20 years as a group.
Speaking to BANG Showbiz at a screening of ‘Supersonic’ in London, he revealed: "I’m working with Coldplay at the moment, I’m touring with them, I’m filming the live show. We haven’t quite figured out what we’re doing, I’ve known them before they were a band. Luckily, they have ability to not have to decide what they’re going to do with it straight away because they’re a big band, so we’ll see. But I’d love it to be a bit more in-depth, it’s up to them, it’s been 20 years for them since they formed, so it feels like it’s a good milestone to look back on the band up to now."
Whitecross admits making ‘Supersonic’ with Liam and Noel was a labour of love because Oasis are his favourite group of all time.
His aim for the documentary was to dispel many of the pre-conceptions about the rock ‘n’ roll siblings and he thinks a film on Coldplay could stop people from thinking Chris Martin is "boring".
He mused: "I grew up with Oasis, they’re my heroes, so for me to step into a room with them had my heart racing because they’re legends. Whereas I grew up with Chris and the band I knew them before they were in a band together. In some ways it’s like a marriage with Coldplay because I see them every few weeks. In some ways we were trying to redress the balance with Oasis because they’ve been caricatured as people. It’s the same with Chris, people assume, for whatever reason, he’s quite boring but he’s actually one of the most interesting and eccentric people you’ll ever meet."
To make ‘Supersonic’ – which is named after Oasis’ 1994 debut single – Whitecross was given unprecedented access to the group’s archive material and Liam and Noel and their fellow band members gave hours of interviews for the project, along with people who were integral to the Manchester group’s incredible rise to fame.
The movie focuses on the band’s formation in 1991 and journey to their historic concerts at Knebworth Park in 1996 at which they played to 250,000 people following the runaway success of their second LP ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?’, which went on to sell over 20 million copies worldwide.
At the time, 2.6 million people applied for tickets for the concerts, and the band could have played 20 sold out nights at the open air venue.
