Britain's Prince Harry was "broken" when his time with the army was cut short.
The 31-year-old royal serviced two operational tours with the Armed Forces but it had to be ended earlier than planned after his deployment was leaked.
Speaking on Good Morning America, he said: "Ten years in the Army was the best escape I ever had. I'd done everything I could to get out there. I felt as though I was really achieving something. I felt as though I was part of a team.
"Literally being plucked out, there was an element of me thinking, 'I'm an officer, I'm leaving my soldiers and it's not my own decision.' I was broken."
The Prince also revealed he felt he had a point to prove and wanted people to see he "had a set of skills - rather than just being Prince Harry".
Meanwhile, the Prince has since turned his attention to helping wounded soldiers with their rehabilitation by creating the Invictus Games.
The third instalment of the Paralympic-style event for injured servicemen and women is set to take place in Toronto, Canada next September, the Prince confirmed earlier this week.
Announcing the news, he said: "I always hoped the Invictus story would continue after the London games. And having seen so many new people benefit from their journey to Orlando this year, I definitely didn't want it to end here. So today, I am absolutely delighted to announce that the Invictus legacy will continue when Toronto hosts the third Invictus Games in September 2017."

Britain's Prince Harry hopes his trip to Nepal will "shine a spotlight" on the region's problems.
The 31-year-old royal is set to travel to the country later this week to help with relief efforts following last year's devastating earthquake.
Speaking at a briefing meeting yesterday (16.03.16), he said: "Everyone is aware of it when it happens, the media is on it, there's a huge amount of interest and then before we know it everyone is onto the next thing.
"Hopefully by doing this trip it will shine a spotlight back onto the issue and people will realise there is still a hell of a lot that needs to be done."
Meanwhile, it was previously revealed the Prince is greatly looking forward to the trip as he "has long wanted to visit" the country.
A Kensington Palace spokesperson said at the time: "Prince Harry is really looking forward to his first trip to Nepal. It is a country he has long wanted to visit.
"He has been moved by the stories of resilience of the Nepali people following the earthquakes last year and is now eager to learn more about their country and culture. With Britain and Nepal currently celebrating 200 years of cooperation, Prince Harry will experience the strength of the relationship and traditional warmth of the Nepali welcome."

Britain's Queen Elizabeth is "shy by nature".
The 89-year-old royal - who became Queen at the tender age of 25 - reportedly has to "gather herself together" sometimes before she enters a room but has the full support of her husband Prince Philip in whatever she does.
A royal aide said: "Sometimes she has to rather gather herself together before she can quite face going into a room where everyone will be looking at her.
"When Prince Philip sees that happening he takes over, in a subtle way, and makes sure everything is OK. He says he can make people laugh within 15 seconds. He's cantankerous with people, and occasionally around the Queen. What people don't realise is that for the past 20 years he has suffered from acute arthritis, which can be very painful."
Meanwhile, the Queen's cousin Margaret Rhodes also revealed the monarch had told her she would only step down if her health forced her hand.
Margaret added to the Daily Mail newspaper: "I don't know how much she would do a Queen Victoria and sit in the background while she was getting over it. She would never consider stepping down.
"I remember someone once repeating my words, saying that she wasn't going to abdicate. When I next saw the Queen, she said to me, 'You should have said, 'She would want to go on being Queen unless she had Alzheimer's or suffered a stroke.'"

Britain's Duchess of Cambridge will spend St Patrick's Day with her children.
The 34-year-old royal - who has two-year-old Prince George and ten-month-old Princess Charlotte with her husband, the Duke of Cambridge - was expected to be attending an official engagement with the Irish Guards today (17.03.16).
A source told The Sun newspaper: "After attending the Commonwealth Service on Monday in London Kate was keen to get back to her children in Norfolk.
"Until she goes on tour in four weeks' time, she'll be spending all her time with the kids so don't expect to see much public duties from her."
The traditional event - which sees shamrocks handed to the Irish Guards - takes place every March 17 and the honours are usually done by a female member of the royal family.
The Duchess has been giving out the shamrocks since 2012 when the role was passed onto her by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne.
For the 115 years, a female member of the royal family has completed the duty but breaking the tradition, Prince William will hand out the shamrocks at the event today.

Britain's Prince Andrew reportedly "rammed open" a gate to avoid a one mile detour.
The incident is said to have happened when the 56-year-old royal drove down a road restricted by gates in Windsor Great Park. When the sensors didn't work, he allegedly smashed his £80,00 Range Rover into the gates to force them open.
A park worker told The Sun newspaper: "It was a crazy thing to do and we are jokingly calling it 'ParkGate'. But seriously, he has a bit of a reputation for roaring around like Toad of Toad Hall and he seems to think he can do what he likes.
"The gate stops deer roaming and the Prince uses it as a short cut. For some reason the sensors didn't work. Instead of going a mile out of his way, he just decided to ram it open."
The incident has put the gates out of operation for the time being whilst it is fixed and is also said to have caused damage to the car and it is thought it will cost a four figure sum to fix.
Meanwhile, Graham Smith, the chief executive of Republic - an anti-monarchy organisation - has confirmed he has reported the incident to the police.
He said: "I was given a reference number - I'm not sure if that makes it a recorded crime but I've reported it. I expect the police to deal with this matter just as they would if the suspect were another person.
"I cannot believe an ordinary member of the public would not be prosecuted for deliberately damaging these gates with their car. This is a matter of principle: will the royals be treated the same as the rest of us or is there a different law for them?"

Britain's Prince Harry has announced that Toronto will host the third Invictus Games.
The 31-year-old royal - who founded the Paralympic-style event for wounded soldiers - has revealed the third instalment will take place in the Canadian city in September 2017.
He said: "I always hoped the Invictus story would continue after the London games. And having seen so many new people benefit from their journey to Orlando this year, I definitely didn't want it to end here. So today, I am absolutely delighted to announce that the Invictus legacy will continue when Toronto hosts the third Invictus Games in September 2017."
The sporting competition - which started off in London in 2014 - encourages its participants, who hail from 15 countries, to embrace their injuries and triumph in various sports including wheelchair basketball and indoor rowing.
The Prince added: "It is a year steeped in rich Canadian military history, marking the anniversaries of historic battles that shaped and defined the nation. It's also the year when Canada will commemorate its 150th anniversary of Confederation. I can't think of a better way to mark this milestone than by paying tribute to the soldiers and veterans who have served their country so bravely and to support them along their journey to recovery."

Zara Phillips was the royal guest of honour at Cheltenham Festival's Champion Day.
The 34-year-old royal - who is an Olympic medal-winning equestrian - attended the event alongside celebrities like Jamie Redknapp and Sir Tony McCoy.
A love of horses runs in Zara's family blood as her husband Mike Tindall previously revealed the couple's daughter, two-year-old Mia, has inherited her mother's love of horses.
He said previously: "Mia our daughter has inherited a love of horses. She has a Shetland pony and she enjoys it so I think her mum has passed that love on ... me on the other hand, well I'm more of a football man."
Cheltenham Racecourse has recently had a permanent addition, The Princess Royal Stand, which was opened by Princess Anne - Zara's mother - recently.
Speaking at the ceremony to mark the occasion, she said: "I'm hugely impressed by what has been achieved here on time. I know that new stands cause their own particular issues when people have been coming here for a long time but I don't think it will take a long time for you to work out your own rat runs and it will be just as good as it was in that sense.
"The viewing perspective is much greater and there will be much more to enjoy. So a huge thank you to Cheltenham for what they have invested in National Hunt racing so we can all enjoy it. I am really touched that you should have asked me to lend my name to this stand."

Britain's Prince Harry is creating a stir at Yale University - over rumours he might be enrolling there.
It has been reported that the 31-year-old royal - who is the youngest son of Prince Charles - may be attending classes at the prestigious establishment, causing quite a "buzz" amongst students.
One student said: "Everyone was talking about it around the campus. Big buzz!"
Whilst another source added to the New York Post's Page Six column: "Yale would be over the moon to get Harry as a student. Imagine the kind of fundraising they could do."
Meanwhile, it was previously revealed the Prince is being given a more "relaxed schedule" ahead of the Invictus Games, which take place in Florida in May.
A source said: "Nearer to the event in May, Harry and the rest of the team will be working flat-out. When events are a way off the schedule is more relaxed."
Whilst a spokesperson for the Invictus Games added: "As our founding patron, Prince Harry takes a hands-on role in the direction of our work. He attends meetings and is heavily involved in the preparation for the forthcoming Invictus Games in Orlando."

Britain's Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall met with locals as they visited a market festival in Croatia.
The royal couple walked around the stalls at the Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival in Trvda, Osijek where they admired various products including wine and cold meats.
They later went their separate ways, with the Duchess heading off to Dakovo State Stud Farm and the Prince of Wales visiting Kopacki Rit Wetlands.
Meanwhile, to welcome them to Croatia earlier this week, the President of Croatia hosted a dinner for the royal couple, where the Prince spoke to praise the beauty of the country.
He said: "Madam President, I am enormously grateful to you for your very kind words on such a special occasion and I'm so grateful to you for arranging such a special dinner this evening.
"The last two times I have visited Croatia the country was at war and just recovering from war. This afternoon I have seen something of Zagreb and I can't tell you how wonderful it is to see how this beautiful city has been so sensitively restored. There could be no better illustration of the extraordinary progress you have made in the past twenty years against so many difficult challenges."
