Patrick Dempsey is mourning the death of his mother.
The 'Grey's Anatomy' star was by Amanda Dempsey's side when she passed away on Monday (24.03.14), following a long battle with ovarian cancer, according to PEOPLE.com.
The 48-year-old actor was inspired by his mother, who fought multiple occurrences of the disease since 1997, and partnered with her treatment facility, the Central Maine Medical Centre to found The Patrick Dempsey Centre for Cancer Hope & Healing in his native Lewiston, Maine with his sisters, Mary and Alicia, in 2008.
He said at the time: "For a family to get a cancer diagnosis is devastating, and all the information out there can be overwhelming. I talked to my sister[s] about a place where people could go for all this type of information and help. Knowledge is power."
The centre "provides free cancer support, education and integrative medicine services to anyone impacted by cancer, regardless of where treatment is received" and has raised more than $5 million to date.
Peter Chalke, President and CEO of Central Maine Healthcare, said in a press release: "The entire Central Maine Medical family mourns the passing of Amanda Dempsey.
"Amanda Dempsey was both a great lady and a determined fighter who displayed tremendous courage, class and grace during her long battle with cancer ... We will miss Amanda deeply, but we were all blessed by knowing her and being inspired by her life story."

Taylor Swift's stalker has been ordered to stay away from her for the next three years.
The 24-year-old singer's temporary restraining order against Timothy Sweet was extended at a hearing in Los Angeles on Tuesday (25.03.14), during which a judge informed him he must stay 100 yards away from the star and also forbid him from going near her parents, Andrea and Scott.
The 'Red' hitmaker claimed that Timothy, 33, had been stalking her since 2011, sending dozens of emails, letters and writing social media posts declaring his love for her.
He also allegedly threatened to "kill any man," including US Secretary of State John Kerry, who came between him and Taylor, as he reportedly believes he's married to the singer, according to gossip website TMZ.com.
In one message to the blonde beauty, Mr. Sweet wrote: "If anyone in Taylor's family get killed it is not my fault.
"My wife Taylor Swift (Sweet) and I live in Beverley Hills. I am in love with her. In conclusion, we treat each other with dignity and respect. I will carry a gun to protect her the rest of my life. (sic)."
He went on: "Dearest Taylor, I'll kill any man who gets in the way of our marriage. Message to John Kerry, Secretary of State. Message from YOUR presidential candidate (sic)."
The singer first filed a request for a temporary protection order against Timothy at LA's Superior Court earlier this month and stated in court documents that his behaviour was "seriously alarming and harassing" and the constant messages and phone calls were "extremely distressing to me and my family."
She added that she did "not have desire to interact with or communicate in any way with Mr. Sweet."

Ashton Kutcher has started asking his friends for parenting advice.
The 'Two and a Half Men' star is "excited" that his fiancée Mila Kunis is pregnant with their first child and has already turned to their former 'That 70s Show' co-star Danny Masterson, who welcomed his daughter Fianna with wife Bijou Phillips last month, for tips about fatherhood.
A source close to the couple told UsMagazine.com: "He asked Danny how it felt to be a dad, if he felt ready. They've been talking about play dates!"
The duo, whose engagement was quietly confirmed last month, can't wait for their baby to arrive later this year.
The insider said: "They are happy, healthy and excited to start a family."
Ashton isn't the only one gearing up for the tot's arrival, as 'Black Swan' star Mila, 30, "is all about being a mother."
A friend recently claimed the couple are planning to get married in a Los Angeles registry office as early as next month.
But the first source insisted they are planning to wait until after the birth, adding: "There is no rush to get married. The wedding will be very intimate and private."
Ashton, 36, began dating the brunette beauty in 2012, following his split from his first wife Demi Moore, but they have known each other since Mila was 14.

Mark Wahlberg is 15 pounds away from his goal weight.
The 42-year-old actor shrunk to 137 lbs. after dropping more than 60 lbs. for his recent role in the upcoming film 'The Gambler,' leaving him almost unrecognisable, but is almost back to his comfortable weight.
The 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' star told PEOPLE.com at CinemaCon in Las Vegas: "It's a lot easier to put it on than it is to lose it."
Mark regularly bulks up and slims down for acting roles, but seeks advice from experts to make sure he is doing everything as healthily as possible.
He explained: "It's just part of the job. I make sure I take all the right steps, take all the right nutrition, all the right exercise, being monitored by doctors. I'm trying to do it in the safest way possible."
The actor, who previously admitted he craved donuts and cut out bread, pasta and wine while on his strict diet, is still trying to gain more weight.
He said: "I want a little bit more. I like to walk around at 190 ... I like to eat though."
Meanwhile, Mark, who has children Ella, 10, Michael, seven, Brendan, five, and Grace, four, with wife Rhea Durham, admitted his family influenced his decision to join the cast of 'Transformers.'
He said: "I haven't really done anything that was kid friendly. That's not the only reason. I don't make decisions that way. It was really the best of both worlds, because it was something they'd be interested in and something I hadn't done before."

Sir Mick Jagger was reportedly joined by 60 of L'Wren Scott's close friends and family members at her funeral in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning (25.03.14).
Security was extremely tight as the "intimate" service got underway at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery at 10am, following the 49-year-old fashion designer's suicide inside her luxury apartment in Manhattan, New York City on March 17.
Shortly beforehand, a source told HollywoodLife.com: "L'Wren's funeral services are taking place this morning at the famed Hollywood Forever Cemetery. All the cars entering are getting checked by security and the trunks are being searched. The main gates are closed and only certain cars are being allowed onto the premises. The services are set to begin at 10am.
"Security is super tight at L'Wren's services. About sixty to seventy guests are expected."
A select group of family and friends were invited to bid a final farewell to the former model, according to the New York Daily News.
An insider added: "It will be an intimate service for close family and friends to pay their respects to L'Wren."
Another source also confirmed to The Sun newspaper: "L'Wren's funeral is today. Everything is in place for people to say their goodbyes."
The Rolling Stones singer, Mick, 70, who has been staying at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills with family since flying to LA from Australia after learning about his girlfriend's death, reportedly organised the funeral with his partner of 13 years' brother, Randall Bambrough.
But L'Wren's sister, Jan Shane, is furious she won't be buried alongside their parents in Utah, where they grew up, and angry with Randall for not consulting her about the arrangements.
She recently said: "I have been frozen out of my own sister's funeral. [My brother] Randy won't talk to me or call me about the arrangements, or my hopes that L'Wren be buried beside mom and dad. I am very angry about this and I cannot get answers from anybody and now I have given up expecting to hear from Mick or anyone".
Jan used to be close to L'Wren - who was originally named Luann after being adopted as a baby by Ivan and Lula Bambrough - but had been estranged from her sister for six years.

Carson Daly is to become a father for the third time.
The 'Voice' host joked he and fiancee Siri Pinter - who already have son Jack, five, and daughter Etta, 19 months, together - have been advised to "slow down" by his mother after announcing they will welcome another child into the world this summer.
Speaking on 'The Tonight Show' last night (24.03.14), he said: "I have a five year old and my daughter's 19 months, and we're expecting a third.
"For years my mom was like, 'When are you going to have a kid?' And now she's like, 'Slow down!' "
Siri, 32, also revealed she, her 40-year-old partner and their children are thrilled by the news, but she admitted she can't stop eating.
Writing on her Siriously Delicious blog, she posted: "I'm pregnant! Carson and I are expecting our third child in mid-August and he, Jack, Etta and I are so happy. Well, as far as I can tell Etta is happy (she thinks the baby lives in my breasts).
"I'm about halfway there, feeling pretty great, and eating enough for five. Is that how it works? Are you supposed to eat for every member of your family, including the baby in your belly? Just say yes and make me feel better about life."

Kelly Osbourne feels "very lucky" to have an "insane" family.
The 'Fashion Police' host is grateful that father Ozzy and mother Sharon Osbourne are supportive of her and she knows not everyone is so close to their parents.
She said: "I am very lucky to have such an incredibly supportive, loving, and lets not forget insane family! I looooooove them so much its beyond words. Unfortunately that is not the case for most."
The 29-year-old star - who recently split from fiance Matthew Mosshart - is an "extremely loyal" friend and will be there for them "for life" because she knows they will offer her the same support.

Robert Downey Jr. was invited to share a Jacuzzi with Chris Evans when they first met.
The 'Iron Man' actor claims his 'Avengers' co-star asked him and wife Susan Levin back to his home to share a hot tub with the "hot girl" he was dating.
Downey told Variety: "I have a vague memory of seeing him and whatever hot girl he was dating across from a dinner with me and Susan. I think he and his girlfriend invited Susan and I back to their house to get in the Jacuzzi, to tell you the truth."
The 48-year-old actor admits he isn't too sure on the exact details of the evening, but he insists Chris' invitation was politely declined.
He joked: "[Did we join them?] No, we did not, and by the way, like I said, that's a vague memory, but that's what I'd like for you to print."
The pair remain good friends and Downey - who has 20-year-old son Indio from his first marriage to Deborah Falconer and two-year-old Exton with Susan - claims to be such a big fan of Chris' lead role in the 'Captain America' franchise, he is going to host a special screening for the upcoming sequel 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' as part of his birthday celebrations.
He said: "I'm not kidding. I'm having 50 kids over and I'm screening 'Captain America 2' on my birthday, which happens to be the day it opens. I haven't seen it. That's one of the perks of being on the inside track at Marvel. I hope it's not watermarked too heavily."

Gary Barlow admits he still gets "nervous" before releasing new music.
The 'Let Me Go' singer claims he still worries about what his fans will think before he brings out new material, despite having conquered the charts as both a solo artist and with his band Take That.
He told 'This Morning': "I'm always nervous around the release of anything because it's your latest work, you've tried hard, you've taken a year to make it or something and you're just giving it and saying 'do you like this or not?'..."
The 43-year-old star has also announced his next single will be 'Face to Face', a collaboration with Elton John, which was recorded at the famous Abbey Road studios in London earlier this year.
He said: "It was my idea ... I was ringing him up pestering him! But for me, because he's my idol, he's the reason I first sat on a piano stool and it was just such a treat to be with him and record a duet. It was fantastic."
Speaking about touring without his Take That band mates - Robbie Williams, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and Howard Donald - he insists he still enjoys the shows.
He said: "I actually really enjoy touring by myself, you know, it's all on your shoulders and I quite like the pressure. But I'm really looking forward to playing all these new songs. And some of the old stuff as well."
Gary added: "I've videoed Elton singing the song [Face To Face], so he's going to be on the big screens, although I said to the production man 'don't make him bigger than me, it's my show remember!'"
When asked if he'd ever pose naked, Gary also laughed and said: "No! Definitely not. I'm trying to keep hold of my fans, not lose them."

Jason Derulo thinks being on tour is like a "vacation".
The 'Talk Dirty' singer insists he has fun on tour despite his hectic schedule and isn't "miserable" like a lot of artists who perform many dates in different countries because he drinks alcohol and doesn't promote the gigs much.
He told BBC Radio 1: "I'm on this world tour, it's like a vacation. I don't do any promo. It's always just about the tour, it's a lot of fun. I get lots of sleep, I work out and do a show. It's like heaven."
The 24-year-old star is currently on his 'Tattoos World Tour' and told presenter Nick Grimshaw he's looking forward to heading to Australia in coming months.
He said: "We've been on the European run for about two months now. We got about two more months left doing Australia and New Zealand and all that.
"It's amazing, it's [my popularity] spread out pretty well, I've been truly blessed. [But] Australia is a little different, I think I've had about 25 Top 5 records there. I don't know what it is about Australia."
Meanwhile, Jason has cut out meat in order to shape up even more for the rest of his live dates, after being encouraged by his backup dancers.
He said: "For the past two weeks I've stopped eating meat all-together. I got a couple of dancers that don't eat any meat and I was on stage one day and I was like, 'Wait a minute, these guys are trying to upstage me', their bodies were starting to look different, so I like, 'Let me try this'.
"It's been kind of hard because everyone around me eats great stuff ... chicken [and] burgers, but I'm starting to like fish a lot more now."
