Princess Anne’s university visit cancelled

Princess Anne's royal visit to King's College London yesterday (10.07.14) was called off due to a strike.
The princess royal was expected to open the university's new £37 million Denmark Hill campus in south London, but the event was cancelled due to a strike by teachers and other staff over plans to cut 60 jobs.
A King's College spokesperson said Princess Anne's visit was nixed "following the announcement by the University and College Union, supported by the Students' Union, that they will be joining a national day of strike action on pay and pensions on 10 July 2014".
The university has "decided to postpone the opening" and will reschedule the royal event for a later date.
Just days prior to the opening, Princess Anne, 63, visited Harrogate for the Great Yorkshire Show where she watched the first ever women's sheep-shearing contest.
Competitor Anna Hall told the Wetherby News: "She was lovely, she asked us where we were from and seemed supportive that it's time us girls got time to shine."

Catherine helping Cressida win Harry back?

Britain's Duchess Catherine is reportedly helping Cressida Bonas get Prince Harry back.
The 25-year-old beauty split from the flame-haired royal two months ago and pals say it's no coincidence she is enjoying newfound fame for her burgeoning acting career since the break-up.
A friend of Cressida's claimed: "Cressida's absolutely everywhere right now, looking like she's having the time of her life.
"She looks stunning and sexy and it's not by accident. It's all part of a plan she's hatched with Kate and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. They've told her to be very visible so Harry can see what he's missing."
Cressida reportedly became close to Catherine, 32, last year and she has advised the blonde beauty on how to win back Harry, 29, based on her own experiences with his brother, Prince William.
A friend told Now magazine: "Kate had taken Cress under her wing and showed her the royal ropes. They really bonded and Kate was quite upset when she and Harry split as it reminded her of when she separated from William in 2007.
"Back then, when she realised she wanted him back, Kate slipped into her slinkiest outfits, went to William's favourite nightspots, got seen with other guys and did everything she could to make her ex realise what he was missing. Now Cress is using the same tactics."

Olly Murs: X Factor should find fresh stars

Olly Murs thinks 'The X Factor' needs to find fresh talent.
The 'Dear Darlin' singer - who was runner-up on the 2009 series - doesn't think bosses should try to replicate the success of past contestants and concentrate on finding new, talented singers.
His comments come after it emerged talent scouts had been issued a 'shopping list' to find contestants who resemble past acts such as Olly, Stacey Solomon, Cher Lloyd and Wagner.
Olly told The Sun newspaper: "As long as they don't find another me, they can find whoever they want."
The 30-year-old star also believes that the new series, which will see the return of Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole to the judging panel, needs to focus on the talent and not be all about the judges.
He explained: "Mr X Factor is back, Mrs X Factor is back. I think it's going to be an amazing show.
"Mel B is going to bring the fire and Louis [Walsh], as always, is going to be the cheeky sort of Irish man in the corner having a good time.
"Most importantly, like I say every year, it's not about the quality of the judging panel, it's about the talent. I think Simon is not really bothered about what people say about the judging, he's more bothered about finding top talent."

Downton stars worried about weight

The stars of 'Downton Abbey' have been told to watch their weight.
Show creator Julian Fellowes has admitted the array of sandwiches laid out for the cast and crew can be very tempting, but the show's stars have asked for catering to be cut back so they don't outgrow their costumes.
Julian's quoted by The Sun newspaper as saying: "The feeling is there's not a better egg sandwich in England.
"But the cast have asked to cut down on supplies so they can't be tempted.
"Between takes and reshoots some actors were munching through a loaf's worth of sarnies."
Actor Rob James-Collier, who plays cunning footman Thomas Barrow in the ITV period drama, added: "The biggest challenge is keeping the weight off between scenes."
'Downton Abbey' is currently filming its fifth series - to air later this year - and Julian recently revealed a sixth series is in the works.
He said: "I would be amazed if there wasn't another series after [this one].
"I don't know yet if there is a season six ... it's not going to go on forever."
'Downton' was among the shows to earn numerous Primetime Emmy Award nominations yesterday (10.07.14), including Best Drama Series.
Michelle Dockery, Dame Maggie Smith, Joanne Froggatt and Jim Carter all earned acting nominations also.

Roy Barraclough doesn’t watch Corrie

'Coronation Street' legend Roy Barraclough thinks the show has become humourless.
The 78-year-old actor, who played Alec Gilroy for 22 years before his departure from the soap in 1998, has hit out at the abundance of sensational storylines in soaps and no longer watches the show that made him a household name.
He said: "I don't watch the show, it has changed so much now from what it was. It doesn't have a hold on me like it used to. The characters have changed and it has drifted away from what it used to be - there was a lot of comedy then.
"In fact I don't watch any of the soaps. They all follow each other, one outdoing the other. If one has a rape, the other has a rape. It's a shame."
Roy believes it might be a "good thing" if soaps like 'Corrie' and 'EastEnders' were to go off air and he now prefers to watch compelling dramas.
He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "There are very good series that the BBC put out like 'Last Tango In Halifax'. Things like that are very good, they are excellent."
