Britain's Prince Harry read a letter from a fallen soldier at a World War One memorial service last night (04.08.14).
The 29-year-old royal - wearing a suit with his Queen's golden and diamond jubilee medals and one for his service in Afghanistan - flew out to Belgium to join his brother Prince William and sister-in-law Duchess Catherine at the Saint Symphorien Military Cemetery in Mons and at the service he read out the note from Private Michael Lennon, of 1st Battalion the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
The letter was dated May 30 1915 and was written to the soldier's brother Frank the day before he was due to land in Gallipoli. Michael was killed in action on June 28 1915, exactly a year after events which sparked the war.
At the service, a letter from the mother of John Parr - who is believed to be the first British soldier to have died on the Western Front - to the War Office was read by the serviceman's grand-niece Iris Hunt, who delivered the reading next to his grave before laying a single white rose.
Catherine - who was known as Kate Middleton before her marriage - laid a bouquet at the commemoration stone in memory of those who lost their lives in battle.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron spoke of the "unbelievable bravery" of those who fought.
He said in an address to gathered dignitaries: "Every war is cruel. But this war was unlike any other.The unspeakable carnage, the unbearable loss, the almost unbelievable bravery.
"One hundred years on, it is right that we meet here - and around the world - to remember."

Simon Cowell missed yesterday's (04.08.14) 'X Factor' auditions.
The 54-year-old music mogul missed the afternoon session at London's Wembley Arena with a migraine, prompting fellow judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini - who he argued with several times during try-outs over the weekend - to joke she was pleased he was away as he had been giving her a headache throughout the auditions.
According to the Daily Star newspaper, she told the crowd: "A migraine? He's been giving us a migraine all week.
"At least it means less rudeness if he isn't here."
While Simon and Cheryl have been squabbling, they have also had some fun as the day before, the 'Crazy Stupid Love' singer and fellow judge Mel B did a lap dance for the head judge during a contestant's rendition of Marvin Gaye's 'Let's Get It On'.
Afterwards Simon said: "I think we both had a good time during that song."
It was revealed yesterday that auditions at the weekend had been blighted by squabbling between the judges, with Cheryl getting annoyed by Simon constantly interrupting her.
When she asked five guys what made them stand out from other boy bands, Simon objected: "That was a really ridiculous question. They're not a boyband!"
Cheryl protested: "I wasn't talking to you."
The pair continued to bicker, with the former Girls Aloud star eventually telling Simon to shut up and going on to shout: "If he doesn't stop whispering in my ear, I will... Grrrr."

Ariana Grande has split from her boyfriend.
The 'Problems' singer - who was recently left devastated by the death of her grandfather - has ended her relationship with Jai Brooks for the second time, reportedly because he hasn't been very "supportive".
A source told Us Weekly magazine: "It has not been an easy few months.
"Jai just wasn't as supportive as he could have been."
Yesterday (04.08.14), the 21-year-old beauty posted a cryptic message on her Twitter page alluding to the fact some people hadn't been there for her while she grieved her grandfather - who she described as the "only [loss] that truly mattered."
She wrote: "You learn a lot about love, life and the people around you during a time of crisis.
"July was painful for many reasons but of all the personal loss I suffered last month, the loss of my grandfather, a true gentleman, was the only one that truly mattered.
"I thank everybody who was here for me when I needed them as the ones who weren't really broke my heart."
The 'Bang Bang' singer is now looking ahead to the future.
She concluded her lengthy post: "August is about to be a beautiful, beautiful month. Looking forward to all the good coming up."
The source added: "She's gearing up for her album release so she's focused on that."
Ariana and comedian Jai first dated in August 2012 and were together for around a year before separating, reconciling earlier this year.

Jessica Alba finally feels "confident in her sexuality".
The 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For' - who has children Honor, six, and Haven, two, with husband Cash Warren - admits she never used to feel at ease doing sexy photoshoots or starring in raunchy film roles, but she is now much more comfortable with herself.
She told E! News: "I just have an ownership of my body and of myself as a woman that I didn't really have before.
"I was such a tomboy, and I would always kinda like try and do role-playing to try and do these sexy things, but now I'm very much woman. I know who I am, I'm confident in my sexuality and now it's not so much of a departure from myself when I have to do photo shoots or play a character."
The 33-year-old beauty recently admitted she was in better shape when she danced regularly but she is "too tired" to do that now.
She said: "Looking back now, my friends are like, 'Your body was really good when you were dancing. You should do that more often!

The supermodel has praised her 'The Expendables 3' actor beau for keeping her feet on the ground. Both Rosie and Jason grew up in England and she believes this has helped them survive living in Hollywood.
Talking in the September issue of Harper's Bazaar magazine, the blonde beauty explained: "That's what makes being with an Englishman out there so great. I mean, we live in Hollywood for f**k's sake. It would be easy to lose touch with reality."

Kim has revealed her 30-year-old sibling consumed "a little too much" at the Palace Of Versailles in France, the evening before she tied the knot with rapper Kanye West at Forte di Belvedere in Florence, Italy, and was "so hungover" the next day.
Speaking about her May nuptials on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!', Kim said: "Khloe drank a little too much the night before and I had to wake her up.
"She was laying down and getting her make-up done while she was sleeping, she was so hungover."
Kim also confirmed the happy couple decided against using traditional name cards for their wedding dinner and instead had their guests' names engraved on the marble tabletops.

Louis Smith hopes 'Tumble' will show that gymnasts are fun characters.
The Olympian has signed up to be a judge on the BBC One programme and he is keen for the series to show that "gymnasts can have a laugh too".
The 25-year-old star told BANG Showbiz: "It's frustrating when you've got a different side to you and people always see you doing the same interviews and being asked the same questions, 'How do you feel about the Olympics?' How's training going?'
"You feel like you've been moulded into this respectable kind of person. This is an opportunity to show the other side of sportsmen. We can have a laugh and enjoy ourselves too."
Louis admits he will not be a soft touch when his is giving critiques to the performers, but he is going to make sure he gives them positive feedback too.
He said: "The fact that I'm still training and competing means I'm going to be honest and straight down the line.
"I'm not just going to be like, 'That was a disaster,' and leave it at that. I'll have to give the celebrities some positive feedback."

The 46-year-old presenter - who fronts 'Got To Dance' on Sky 1 - is known for her enviable physique, but says she still suffers from the occasional insecurity.
Speak to OK! magazine, she said: "On 'Long Lost Family', they filmed me from behind and I look at my bum and go, 'Good God - it's just so wide!'
"But I've got to say a big thank you to Kim Kardashian because she's made the bottom a hallowed thing. I'm so happy that my big bottom doesn't look that big anymore."
Davina ran, cycled and swam 500 miles from Edinburgh to London for Sport Relief in February and recently admitted that she and husband Matthew Robertson were in a "tough place" in the lead up to her challenge.
She said: "We had a really difficult six months. Matthew's dad was ill, I was doing the challenge and he'd hurt his shoulder."

Adele, One Direction and Take That will go head-to-head with their new albums.
The 'Skyfall' singer is reportedly planning to release her long-awaited third album - which is expected to be called '25' - in the UK on November 24, the same date the 'Little Things' hitmakers' record company and the 'Greatest Day' band's frontman Gary Barlow have been eyeing for their new records in order to cash in on the busy Christmas markets.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "Adele is finally ready to unleash 25 and as the world's top-selling star, you'd imagine nobody would dare compete with her.
"But One Direction are up for the fight. Bosses at their label, Sony, have also pencilled in November 24 as the day for the global launch of their fourth album.
"Gary Barlow also wants Take That's new album to come out with plenty of shopping days before Christmas, so there could be a clash."
And the trio could face even more competition to take the number one slot on the album charts, as U2, Coldplay and Kanye West are all expected to release new records in the latter part of 2014.
Adele - whose last album, '21' was released in 2011 - previously hinted the LP would be called '25' after she turned 26 years old in May.
She made a post on her Twitter account which read: "Bye bye 25... See you again later in the year x (sic)"
The title '25' follows on from the age-related names of her last two records, '19' and '21'.

Sony Pictures are planning a female 'Spider-Man' spin-off.
The studio have pushed back the next installment in the franchise - which stars Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and his titular alter ego - to 2018 and before that movie comes out, they want to release a women-driven film, Deadline reports.
According to the website, Lisa Joy has been hired to write the script and Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce, though it is unclear as yet which characters from the superhero stories will feature in the movie.
A source said: "What other movies we could do was something everyone started talking about when shooting the last movie.
"With [female-driven] 'Salt', 'Wanted' and 'Lucy', there is a huge appetite for this right now."
Though it is too early for any casting to be taken place, 'Guardians of the Galaxy' actress Karen Gillan recently admitted she would love to play Spider-Girl in a film.
The former 'Doctor Who' actress expressed an interest in portraying a "lady version" of Spider-Man and after learning about both May 'Mayday' Parker aka Spider-Girl, and Julia Carpenter, the alter ego of Spider-Woman she made a quick decision over the role she'd prefer.
Asked which superhero she'd like to play, she said: "Yeah, who is there...? I want to play a version of Spider-Man that's a lady.
Spider-Woman - does she exist? I want to play Spider-Girl!"

Justin Bieber will only party with "hot" girls.
The 20-year-old singer reportedly angered female revellers at Ibiza's Amnesia nightclub at the weekend by handpicking women from the crowd to join him at his VIP balcony area and insisting they left their friends behind if he didn't feel they were pretty enough.
A source said: "Justin was causing trouble by getting his entourage to walk around the main club floor. They told girls to come with them if they wanted to party with Bieber.
"But some were told only they could come along because their friends were not 'hot enough'."
And the 'Beauty and a Beat' hitmaker's behaviour with those who were chosen to join him was "pretty strange" as he didn't even speak to the women.
The source added to The Sun newspaper: "He didn't even seem to talk to them. He just sort of stood in the middle as they danced around. It was pretty strange."
