Angelina Jolie thought it was "romantic" to wear Billy Bob Thornton's blood around her neck.
The 'Maleficent' actress and her ex-husband - who she married in 2000 and split from two years later - famously wore the vials of fluid during their relationship and the 'Fargo' star insists it was his former spouse's idea to cut their fingers to get the blood and wear them to feel closer to one another when they were working apart.
Speaking to students at Loyola Marymount University's School of Film & Television, he said: "A vial of blood is very simple. Angie came home one day with a kit she bought.
"You know those lockets you buy that are clear and you put a picture of your granny in it or something like that and wear it around your neck? That's what it was. She bought two of those. We were apart a lot because she's off making 'Tomb Raider' and I'm making 'Monster's Ball.' We were on opposite ends - we see each other for two weeks and whatever.
"She thought it would be interesting and romantic if we took a little razorblade and sliced our fingers, smeared a little blood on these lockets and you wear it around your neck just like you wear your son or daughter's baby hair in one. Same thing."
The 59-year-old star joked the gesture was then exaggerated in reports.
He said: "From that, we were wearing quart jars of blood around our necks.
"And we were vampires and we lived in a dungeon."
The five-times married star insisted he prefers to be upfront about his past and thinks he is unusual in that respect.
He said: "I think it's your duty to kind of tell people the truth about this stuff and the truth is not encouraged anymore."

Katie Price's husband only has to "blink" and she falls pregnant.
The 36-year-old former glamour model - who has children Harvey, 12, Junior, nine, and Princess, seven, from previous relationships, as well as Jett, 13 months, and Bunny, two months, with spouse Kieran Hayler - has vowed to continue having kids over the next decade but doesn't think she'll need fertility help as she and the stripper are so "compatible".
She said: "I will have more kids in my forties.
"It's a long way off yet, who knows how hard it will be to conceive?
"But I do know with Kieran he only has to blink and look what happens - I'm pregnant.
"When you're compatible with someone it doesn't matter if you've got strong swimmers or not."
Katie was joined by Kieran and kids Princess, Junior and Bunny at the launch of her new book 'Make My Wish Come True' in London last night (23.10.14), where she turned heads in a bizarre embellished white bodice, a white feathered cape and sparkling tiara and a six foot wand in an attempt to mirror her new novel's cover art.
And as well as celebrating her latest ghost-written work of fiction, Katie - who has already released a series of romance novels, autobiographies and children's books - promised a new installment of her life story will be released soon, in which she will go into detail about Kieran's infidelity with her best friend Jane Pountney.
She told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "A lot has happened that people don't realise, but in the next book everything will be explained. Sometimes people deserve a second chance.
"Trust me if something like this had happened to one of my friends I would have said, 'What are you doing taking him back? Get rid.' But no-one knows what's happened behind the scenes.
"I've started my next autobiography and it's out next year.
"It was going to come out in 2016, but I had to bring it forward as so much has happened this year and stuff I missed out from the last book. It will definitely raise eyebrows.
"I'm the one who has to go through the drama, but my life keeps getting more shocking."

Zelda Williams has paid a touching tribute to her late father Robin by having a humming bird tattooed on her hand.
The 25-year-old actress had the inking done on her right hand above the actor's birth date, "7.21.51", after he took his own life in August, and she has admitted she will "always shake with a smile" as a result of the tattoo.
In part of a heartfelt message attached to the image, which she had inked by tattoo artist Dr. Woo at Shamrock Social in Hollywood on Wednesday (22.10.14), she wrote on Instagram: "For poppo. Thank you to the incomparable@dr_woo_ssc for so beautifully bringing my reminders to life. I'll always put my hand out to shake with a smile. (sic)"
The 'Teen Wolf' star also admitted she isn't planning on using Instagram a great deal in the future but is keen to keep her account active so her fans know it is her official page, and she warned supporters not to share personal information or donations with anyone claiming to be her or her family.
In the other part of her message, she wrote: "As for this Instagram, I don't know in what capacity I'll continue using it in the future, but I'm leaving it up regardless so that fake accounts hoping to use my name or misuse my family's photos will get no traction. To be clear, this is MY ONLY account. Publicly, I have Twitter, and this. If other people post quotes and photos claiming to be me or my family, please, do not send them personal information or click links, even for charity. They could be utilizing sympathy to scam you. For the record, no one has ever or will ever speak for me but me. Thank you. (sic)"
The raven-haired star - who was named by Robin after computer game 'The Legend of Zelda' - briefly quit Twitter after receiving abusive messages following her father's suicide in August but later returned to the social networking site.
Zelda paid tribute to Robin again earlier this month when she took to Twitter to promote World Mental Health Day after revealing her father had "fought depression his whole life".
She wrote: "Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. Mental illness is often misunderstood & misrepresented, but that's starting to change. Let's end the stigma.
"Mental health IS as important as physical health, & whether there are visible signs or not, the suffering is real. It can affect EVERYONE.
"Lastly, my dad openly fought depression his whole life, both in general and his own. No matter what anyone says, it is a FIGHT. Fight on. (sic)"

Roxy Shahidi's husband proposed to her before they'd even kissed.
The 'Emmerdale' actress has revealed that her husband Arsher Ali asked her to marry him after knowing her for just two weeks.
Roxy - who met her actor partner while performing at the National Theatre in 2007 - told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "He just looked me in the eye at a cast party and said, 'Will you marry me?' I didn't answer and he said, 'You will be my wife' and that was it.
"I didn't know quite what to make of it because I didn't know him that well. I knew that he liked me but we hadn't really said anything. We hadn't even kissed!"
However, things soon got serious between the pair and they made their vows to each other at a blessing in 2010, although she admitted that they have yet to legalise their union by signing the marriage register.
She said: "We'll get round to it at some point I just don't think it's a massive priority that's all."
"My mum came over from Ireland. My auntie came over from the States and all of his family came - it was lovely. We view ourselves as man and wife. I call him my husband."
Despite saying that she's not in a "mega-crazy rush" to start a family, Roxy, who currently plays Leyla Harding on the ITV soap opera, admitted that hanging out with her co-star Natalie Anderson (who plays Alicia Gallagher) and her son Freddie had left her feeling "broody".
She said: "I love Freddie. He's great. He does make me broody because we really get on with each other. I'm quite pleased he likes me."

Chloe Jasmine Whichello has turned down the chance to appear on Celebrity Big Brother.
The blonde beauty - who competed on this year's 'The X Factor' until she was voted off alongside fellow contestant Stephanie Nala last weekend - first rejected an offer by Channel 5 bosses to appear on the reality TV series prior to her stint on the competition earlier this year and is now said to have snubbed them again following her exit from the ITV show.
The 25-year-old model reportedly feared the competition would be too "stressful" for her and didn't want to feel "trapped" in the Big Brother house.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "They made a really generous offer but Chloe decided that it isn't right for her.
"She's quite sensitive and was worried spending all that time trapped in the house would be stressful.
"She just didn't want to put herself through it, especially after the stress and pressures of 'The X Factor'. So she politely declined."
However, Chloe - who also starred on the reality modelling series 'The Face' last year - isn't ruling out a return to TV in the future if the "right show" came along.
The source explained: "It's not necessarily the case that she won't consider other shows in the future, but it'd have to be the right time and the right show."

Len Goodman has called out twerking celebrities describing them as "copycats".
The 'Strictly Come Dancing' judge has blasted singers and performers for plagiarising old dance routines.
Referring to Miley Cyrus' twerking, the 70-year-old television personality explained that the booty-shaking move has been stolen from the 1920s dance, the Charleston and that even Michael Jackson's famous moonwalk was borrowed from Afro American dancing.
Talking to the Daily Star newspaper, Len said: "It's nothing new.
"All these kids twerking and jerking - why are they doing that?"
The former professional dancer - who joined the 'Strictly' judging panel in 2004 - then revealed that he started dancing to get a girlfriend.
He told the newspaper: "Dancing was the place you went to meet girls.
"I didn't start dancing until I was 21. I used to play football and hurt my foot and I was hobbling about with my mates and suggested going to the pictures.
"But my mate said he was going ballroom dancing. He said, 'There's four boys and 30 girls.' So I said, 'I'll come.'"

Marc Baylis feels more attractive since his 'Coronation Street' character Rob Donovan murdered Tina McIntyre on the ITV soap.
The 37-year-old actor insists he has had more attention from female viewers since his character killed Tina (played by Michelle Keegan) on the series in May and was even forced to defend himself after one eager fan grabbed his bottom.
He told The Sun newspaper: "I was doing a personal appearance at a hotel room of 500 women. All of a sudden two hands grabbed a buttock each! I said, 'Are you having a laugh? Surely that's illegal to just grope me!'
"It was a middle-aged lady and she said, 'Oh, I enjoyed that'.
"It's quite perverse but people have started to find Rob a bit more attractive, which worries me!"
Marc admitted he was shocked by the response to Rob's dark side after he pushed the pretty brunette over a balcony and beat her with a metal pipe as he initially expected a bad reaction from viewers.
He explained: "That's what I'd psyched myself up for and prepared for, but it's been the polar opposite."
The hunky actor has done his best to keep Rob from being perceived as a vicious killer by showing a more "human" side to his character, allowing the audience to sympathise him.
He said: "I've tried to keep it as human as possible, so Rob hasn't become the plotting villain, and people have related to it.
"It could happen to anyone in that moment of anger, so people sympathise with him."

Nick Mason says Pink Floyd will not play live again because David Gilmour doesn't want to hit the road.
The two musicians reunited this year to make new album 'The Endless River', which features multiple parts recorded by late keyboard player Rick Wright - who passed away in 2008 aged 65.
However, fans hoping for a tour by the legendary band will be left disappointed as guitarist-and-vocalist Gilmour doesn't want to play the record live.
When asked if the group could tour again at the Q Awards on Wednesday (22.10.14), Mason told BANG Showbiz: "I would do it but Dave doesn't want to. So no there are no plans for any shows."
Speaking after he collected the Classic Album prize for Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side Of The Moon', he added: "It would be fun to play live, but it doesn't actually lend itself to a proper tour. It's something that you could play in UFO Club in 1967, it certainly isn't a stadium sort of event, and without Rick it's probably impossible. It's impossible to play, because the nature of it is that a lot of it is designed there and then - if one played it again, you wouldn't want to repeat what was one the record. It's not something where you learn it and play it."
Mason also revealed he and Gilmour never considered asking former bandmate Roger Waters to play on the album because the music was originally recorded when they were making 1994 LP 'The Division Bell' which Waters didn't play on.
The 70-year-old drummer said: "No it was never a consideration to get Roger on the record. All this music was stuff we did 20 years ago for 'Division Bell' which didn't have Roger on it wouldn't make sense to ask him."
'The Endless River' is the most pre-ordered album of 2014 on Amazon.co.uk, overtaking Coldplay's 'Ghost Stories' and it could even overtake One Direction's 2013 hit 'Midnight Memories' as the most pre-ordered album of all time on the website.

'The Endless River' is the most pre-ordered album of 2014 on Amazon.co.uk, overtaking Coldplay's 'Ghost Stories' and it could even overtake One Direction's 2013 hit 'Midnight Memories' as the most pre-ordered album of all time on the website.

Keanu Reeves has always wanted to play a high-profile superhero.
The 'Matrix' actor explained that although he craves the opportunity to play Batman or Wolverine, he has never been offered the chance.
The 50-year-old star told Moviefone: "I always wanted to play Wolverine. But I didn't get that. And they have a great Wolverine now.
"I always wanted to play The Dark Knight. But I didn't get that one. They've had some great Batmans. So now I'm just enjoying them as an audience."
Asked whether he would like to direct a film featuring the iconic characters, he responded: "Yeah, I could do that."
The actor also spoke about movies that have their origins in comic books, explaining: "I love the graphic novel form. I like how it's been translated.
"I certainly think it's impactful, with the images translating to cinema. I mean just look at 'The Matrix'. That was influenced by graphic novels and anime. I like that world. I like action. I like science fiction. I like heightened realism."
Reeves is currently working on 'Bill & Ted 3', which will feature multiple versions of the film's titular characters.
Alex Winter - who played Bill S Preston alongside Reeves as Ted Theodore Logan - said recently that the third movie will start with Bill and Ted in their 40s.
He explained: "[It's] answering the question: 'What happened to these guys?'
"They're supposed to have done all this stuff, they weren't the brightest bulbs on the tree, what happened 20 years later? To answer that question in a comedic way felt rich with possibility."
