A Kensington Palace spokesman said: "His Royal Highness is hugely excited and motivated about this opportunity.
"He sees this as public service in its truest sense, helping people in the most difficult of circumstances on the front line. He sees it as a privilege to be able to serve in this way."
William - who has 12-month-old son Prince George with wife Duchess Catherine will continue to carry out public duties and charity work and his roster will be organised to accommodate his royal commitments.
A source told the Evening Standard newspaper: "It is the perfect opportunity for him. He can combine royal duty with spending time with his family and his passion for flying.
"The queen, the Prince of Wales and his wife the Duchess of Cambridge fully support his decision."
The former RAF search and rescue pilot will first undertake five months of training from September and will then work from both Cambridge and Norwich airports, on day and night shifts, from spring 2015.

Orlando Bloom ‘taken’ with model

Orlando Bloom is "really taken" with Lykke Glommen.
The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' actor - who split from Miranda Kerr after three years of marriage last October - has been seen growing close to the Swedish model while on holiday in Ibiza, Spain and they even shared a jet ski during an outing to the beach.
A source told Us Weekly magazine: "He's really taken with her. He was spending a lot of time with her and got her info. He is planning on seeing her again."
However, the insider insists Orlando - who has three-year-old son Flynn with Miranda - isn't looking for a serious relationship.
The source added: "He is not looking to settle down just yet."
During his vacation, Orlando, 37, was spotted cuddling Australian singer-and-model Erica Packer - whose ex-husband James Packer is rumoured to be dating Miranda - but the insider insisted they are just friends.
The source said: "There's nothing going on [there]. That was platonic."
Orlando's trip to Ibiza has proved to be eventful as he has also been involved in an altercation with Justin Bieber.
The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star attempted to punch the 20-year-old singer at upmarket restaurant Cipriani, reportedly because of a jibe the 'Boyfriend' hitmaker made about Miranda.

Sinead O’Connor slams ‘disgusting’ industry people

Sinead O'Connor took a career break because of "disgusting" people in the music industry.
The 'Nothing Compares 2 U' singer received rave reviews for her 2012 album, 'How About I Be Me (And You Be You)' but early on in her tour, Sinead was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Now the 47-year-old musician has spoken out against her diagnosis and questions the motives of the people who were meant to be looking after her.
Talking to The Sun newspaper, she explained: "I had to leave the tour for genuine reasons of being unwell as a result of medication I was put on for a condition we're not sure I ever had. I had a reaction to the medication.
"With people in the business everything became so horrible. I've never seen anything f***ing like it in my life. Disgusting really. The worst of the worst."
Sinead - who is now preparing to release her new album, 'I'm Not Bossy, I'm The Boss' - admitted falling "madly in love" with music again had saved her.
She said: "It was the kind of stuff that made you want to jump of a roof. I thought if I didn't fall madly in love with music again I'd be in trouble, so that's what I did."
The shaven-haired songstress revealed the inspiration behind her tenth studio album came from the 'Ban Bossy Campaign', which is backed by the likes of Beyonce and the US Girl Scouts.
Sinead shared: "In the music business, artists are treated as if we are working for the people who are in fact working for us."

Paris Hilton scoops £1.6m for four nights DJ-ing

Paris Hilton scooped £1.6 million for four nights work as part of her new two-month DJ tour.
The heiress kicked off her run of 13 gigs with a set at Ibiza's Amnesia club, where she has a residency, on Wednesday night (06.08.14), but she was blasted for earning her huge £207,000-an-hour pay packet for simply "pressing play" as other workers reportedly did a lot of the technical work.
An Ibiza source told The Sun newspaper: "She's making £1.6 million from the four nights - £207,000 an hour.
"The crowds do seem to enjoy it but most are too off their faces to care that she's simply pressed play on a Beyoncé megamix."
Paris has appeared to confirm she received the sum for four nights work after retweeting a fan's message about her big wages.
The tweet read: "Only Paris can do this RT @SuperiorPics Paris Hilton 'getting paid £1.6m for just FOUR nights work as DJ in Ibiza' (sic)"
Paris certainly seemed to be enjoying herself at Amnesia as she took to her Twitter account to tell her followers she was having a great time and reveal her favourite track to play is Calvin Harris' 'Summer'.
She wrote: "Amazing time at @amnesia_ibiza! @CalvinHarris #Killedit! His song #Summer is so sick! Loves it! (sic)"
Paris' DJ tour will see her take to the decks at L'Atlantida in Barcelona tonight (08.08.14) before she heads to St. Tropez followed by two dates in Portugal.
The 33-year-old socialite will also be jetting off to South Korea, Colombia, Marbella and Barcelona to show off her spinning skills with a number of returns to Amnesia scheduled in between those dates.
Paris' final DJ gig will be at Harrah's Pool After Dark in Atlantic City, New Jersey on October 11.

Peter Capaldi extends Doctor Who deal

Peter Capaldi will star in a second series of 'Doctor Who'.
The 56-year-old actor - who hasn't yet appeared on screen as the Time Lord - has extended his contract to include a Christmas special and another complete run of episodes, and hopes he can take the character even beyond that in the future.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "Peter is the perfect Doctor.
"He's a life-long fan of the show and a great actor.
"He wanted to do another series and the BBC wanted him back.
"Even before the premiere, no one at the BBC was in any doubt that Peter was going to be brilliantly received.
"It's hoped that he'll play the role for years."
The first episode of the new series, 'Deep Breath', premiered in Cardiff, Wales, yesterday (07.08.14) and received rave reviews.
And despite his advancing years, Peter insists his age isn't holding him back with the physical aspects of the role.
He said: I've just been filming a sequence in which I have to be suspended on wires 20ft in the air for a whole day.
"It was fantastic -- like being nine years old! I was the Doctor and Superman.
"Where else is a man of my age going to be attached to wires and flung around a room?
"I think too much is made of my age -- but who cares? Doctor Who is over 2,000 years old."

Sylvester Stallone: I wanted to strangle Arnie

Sylvester Stallone wanted to "strangle" Arnold Schwarzenegger every day at the height of their fame.
The 'Expendables 3' actor is now friends with his former rival but he admits they were so competitive with one another in the 1980s, they couldn't bear to be in the same room.
He said: "Did you ever have someone you wanted to strangle every day? It got to the point where we stopped talking to each other and couldn't be in the same room.
"We came along at the same time, we started to pioneer this action thing -- although I was first -- and we were so competitive."
And the 68-year-old actor claimed the former Governor of California made a cunning attempt to trash his career by starting a rumour he wanted a role in 'Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot', prompting Stallone to quickly sign up for the 1992 flop comedy, which was savaged by critics at the same time Schwarzenegger, 67, was winning praise for 'Terminator 2'.
He admitted during an event in Manchester, North West England, last week: "I heard Arnold wanted to do that movie and after hearing that, I said I wanted to do it. He tricked me! He's always been clever."

Helen Flanagan thinks she's "matured."
The former 'Coronation Street' actress - who had her home broken into my three masked men last year - believes she's grown up over the past 12 months and is keen to have less "drama" in her life from now on.
Speaking in this month's issue of FHM magazine, she said: "It's been a really mental year. Last summer was really full of drama. But I think I've calmed down a bit now. I've matured."
Meanwhile, the 24-year-old beauty recently revealed she and her on/off boyfriend Scott Sinclair were trying for a baby and she'd even come off her acne medication to increase their chances of conceiving.
She said previously: "I've been on some really strong acne medication but I've just come off it because I'm ready to start trying for a baby with Scott.
"I've always wanted to be a young mum and I now feel ready. It's something I've wanted for ages and Scott's going to be a great dad.
"I just hope it doesn't take me too long. And I'm not bothered about getting married beforehand."
The stunning star has even set up a home with the soccer hunk in Bath ready for when they start a family together and hoping to invest more time in to their relationship from now following their split last year.

Great British Bake Off stars create insect recipes

Former 'Great British Bake Off' contestants Holly Bell, Glenn Cosby and Ruth Clemens have each created a new recipe containing edible insects.
The recipes of the three celebrity chefs containing all sorts of creepy crawlies, including crickets and mealworms, are to be included on the menu in Rentokil's Pestaurant Bug Off competition, with the winning recipe set to be dished up to the public.
Teacher Glenn Cosby, who came sixth on the 2013 edition of the 'Great British Bake Off', said: "Crickets are absolutely perfect for this recipe as they have a crunchy, nutty flavour. The cakes turned out fantastically and the peanut brittle worked well with the crickets. I might even bake with them again!"
Author Holly Bell, who was runner-up in the 2011 series, reflected on her Black Forest recipe, saying: "Not only is this a gluten-free brownie but it is also high in protein because I used ground almonds and mealworms. The brownie is gooey in the middle but has that extra crunch from the added mealworms."
While, former retail manager Ruth Clemens, finalist in the 2010 edition of the show, made an Early Bird Breakfast Pie using bamboo worms.
She said: "I've thoroughly enjoyed having a bit of fun, making something different, and bringing my Early Bird Breakfast Pie to Pestaurant."
Rentokil's Pestaurant 2014 will take place at London's One New Change on August 21.

Sam Smith in talks for Bond theme

Sam Smith is in talks to record the 'Bond 24' theme.
The 'Lay Me Down' singer is reportedly in negotiations with James Bond bosses about making the iconic track as they are growing tired of waiting for Adele - who won a string of awards for 'Skyfall', her song from the 23rd Bond film of the same name - to confirm whether she wants to do it again.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "Sam is our top choice. He has the profile, cool image and astonishing voice to record a Bond theme.
"And there is only so long we can hold out for Adele. Daniel Craig was pushing for her because she did such a great job last time around.
"But from her perspective, how can she better what she did with 'Skyfall'? She won an Oscar, Bafta, Golden Globe and had a global number one."
If Sam does land the coveted theme, he will be the first British male vocalist to do so since Duran Duran recorded 'View to a Kill' almost 30 years ago - and the first time a solo male has had the job since Sir Tom Jones in 1965.
The source added: "Sam would be strong for our brand. It's about time we had a British male singing the title track again.
"Sam's range means he can really dish up passion, energy and excitement when the opening titles roll with the music."

George Clooney’s wedding to be in Vogue

George Clooney's wedding will feature in America's Vogue magazine.
The 'Monuments Men' actor and human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin are set to tie the knot in Italy next month, and among the guests at the celebrations will be the publication's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
A source said: "She wouldn't go there and not cover it."
Amal is expected to wear a gown created by Oscar de la Renta and, because the designer is a close friend of Anna, the dress will feature heavily in the wedding coverage.
The insider told the New York Post newspaper's Page Six column: "She and Oscar are such good friends and [she'd] want to give him some attention."
Meanwhile, the groom will reportedly wear Giorgio Armani and a team of designers recently flew to his Italian estate for fittings with the 53-year-old actor and the male members of the wedding party.
A source told WWD: "They're locked and loaded."
George and Amal, 36, are planning a small and intimate wedding but will also celebrate with a number of parties before and after the nuptials, which are reportedly taking place in Venice on September 20.
A source said: "They're going to have top security, but include a really small group. Very intimate, and mostly family."
The couple got engaged in April after seven months of dating.

Rita Ora ‘adores’ Calvin Harris

Rita Ora still "adores" Calvin Harris.
The 'R.I.P' singer split from the Scottish DJ in June after just over a year of dating and thought she admits she still isn't over their break-up, she has nothing but positive things to say about her former lover.
She told Britain's Glamour magazine: "We both work really hard, we're both all over the place.
"I'm not doing too great but I'm doing better than I thought.
"I adore him and he's an amazing human being."
However, Rita, 23, also admitted she would never have spoken about their split on Twitter if Calvin, 30, hadn't used the social media site to confirm their romance was over.
She added: "Honestly, if Calvin hadn't done it, I wouldn't have. It took me five days to write three sentences. It was massive."
It was previously claimed the 'I Will Never Let You Down' hitmaker was left "embarrassed" when Calvin used Twitter to announce they had separated because she was "shocked" by the public post.
A source said: "Rita was left embarrassed when he tweeted that it was all over.
"She didn't think he was going to make the announcement, so she was shocked."
Announcing their split, Calvin wrote on the site: "To address speculation -- myself and Rita ended our relationship some time ago. She is a beautiful, talented woman & I wish her all the best. (sic)"
