Great British Bake Off stars create insect recipes

Former ‘Great British Bake Off’ contestants Holly Bell, Glenn Cosby and Ruth Clemens have each created a new recipe containing edible insects.

The recipes of the three celebrity chefs containing all sorts of creepy crawlies, including crickets and mealworms, are to be included on the menu in Rentokil’s Pestaurant Bug Off competition, with the winning recipe set to be dished up to the public.

Teacher Glenn Cosby, who came sixth on the 2013 edition of the ‘Great British Bake Off’, said: "Crickets are absolutely perfect for this recipe as they have a crunchy, nutty flavour. The cakes turned out fantastically and the peanut brittle worked well with the crickets. I might even bake with them again!"

Author Holly Bell, who was runner-up in the 2011 series, reflected on her Black Forest recipe, saying: "Not only is this a gluten-free brownie but it is also high in protein because I used ground almonds and mealworms. The brownie is gooey in the middle but has that extra crunch from the added mealworms."

While, former retail manager Ruth Clemens, finalist in the 2010 edition of the show, made an Early Bird Breakfast Pie using bamboo worms.

She said: "I’ve thoroughly enjoyed having a bit of fun, making something different, and bringing my Early Bird Breakfast Pie to Pestaurant."

Rentokil’s Pestaurant 2014 will take place at London’s One New Change on August 21.
