Nick Mason’s singing career ‘nipped in the bud by jealous band mates’

Nick Mason has blamed his singing career not taking off on his "jealous band mates".
The Pink Floyd drummer only recorded vocals on three tracks – ‘Vegetable Man’, ‘Scream Thy Last Scream’ and ‘One Of These Days’ – but he feels he could have had a "promising" foray into being a vocalist if it wasn’t for the group, which over the years included David Gilmour, Roger Waters and both the late Syd Barrett and Richard Wright, being envious of his talent.
He said: "It’s distressing for me that my vocal career, which was looking promising, was suddenly nipped in the bud by jealous band mates.
"Seriously, I didn’t really fancy myself as a singer. Even I thought this isn’t where I’m heading."
Meanwhile, the 72-year-old musician says that the death of singer Barrett in 2006 – from pancreatic cancer – left them in a "curious situation", but they remained strong and vowed to carry on without him, and the ‘Comfortably Numb’ hitmaker says he thinks that inspired the likes of Genesis and Fleetwood Mac.
He told The Sun newspaper: "After Syd left, we were in that curious situation of the frontman leaving and we could have just packed it in.
"But what we did has worked really well for other people, Genesis and Fleetwood Mac, for example.
"You’ve got to have confidence, and belief and somehow you get through it."
Mason previously said that he doesn’t think Pink Floyd will reunite unless it’s for a good cause.
Asked if he thinks the group will tour again, he previously told BANG Showbiz: "I would say absolutely not. But having said that I certainly don’t think there will be another Pink Floyd tour.
"Hopefully if we were going to do something it would have to be for the right reason like generating peace in the Middle East or feeding Africa or whatever."
Nick said the reason their Live 8 show in 2005 – which saw him he reunite with Roger Waters and David Gilmour – worked was because they put their "differences" aside to focus on the benefits of performing at the concert.
He said: "With the show for Live 8 that everyone whatever their differences and unresolved issues would be put aside. It would have to be something for more than our own egos."
