James Franco admits the controversy surrounding 'The Interview' caught people "off guard".
The 36-year-old star appears alongside Seth Rogen in the much-discussed comedy film - which initially saw its release pulled because of terrorist threats - and Franco admits the movie industry was unprepared for what unfolded.
He explained: "A lot of people were taken off guard by what happened. Even the industry press had some very strange reactions to it."
According to Franco, the film - which features North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, played by Randall Park - raises questions about how best to protect "artistic freedom".
However, the actor has thanked US President Barack Obama for supporting the release of the film, even though he mistakenly called him "James Flacco" during a recent news conference.
Franco told The Hollywood Reporter: "It's still up in the air about how this should be dealt with and how we deal with it in a responsible way, in a way that protects artistic freedom.
"Everybody agrees that that is something we all value, and we should protect, but how we do that is what's in question, how we do that best. But I'm glad the president has James Flacco's back."

Rizzle Kicks' Jordan Stephens is a huge fan of Shaun the Sheep.
The British hip-hop act, which also features Harley Alexander-Sule, have provided music for the soundtrack of the new film and Jordan has revealed himself to be a long-time fan of the character, who first appeared in the 1995 short film 'A Close Shave'.
Speaking at the European premiere of the new movie, Jordan told BANG Showbiz: "[The characters have] just got a completely unique look, obviously. It's a very British style of comedy. I mean, you just look back at 'Wallace and Gromit', it's very dry humour. I just love it. Shaun in 'A Close Shave' was my favourite 'Wallace and Gromit' film."
Since starring in 'A Close Shave', Shaun has become a popular character on children's TV and Jordan was amazed to learn that the seven-minute episodes were broadcast in 180 countries globally.
He shared: "I didn't even know he killed it, I didn't even know he was doing so well. They were like, 'Shaun, yeah, he's got his own TV show.' I typed it in and I was like, 'It's Shaun! It's the sheep!' I love him."

Samuel L Jackson doesn't think he'll ever get to be in a 'Bond' movie.
The 'Snakes on a Plane' star has revealed that part of the reason he signed up for 'Kingsman: The Secret Service' is because he wanted to play a 'Bond' style villain.
He said: "I don't think I'll ever get to be in a Bond film, so I felt like this was an opportunity to play a really great Bond villain."
A 'Bond' film is certainly not one of the next three movies on the cards for the 66-year-old actor, as he revealed that he must always know what films he's doing next.
He said: "I tend to insist to my agents that I know the next three movies I'm doing ahead of time."
When asked if he drives his agents insane, he added: "Yes I do! It's a lot of pressure finding a job for me."
The 'Pulp Fiction' actor also admitted that he reads through most scripts but leaves the negotiating to his team.
He shared to The Observer magazine: "They just give me a bunch of stuff and I'll pick one and say: 'Negotiate this deal.' You know, we make things work.
"If it's a good story, I might say: 'They want me to play this guy. I don't like that guy. I like that guy. Can I be that guy?' And they'll find out.
"And then, at other times when a movie comes along, it might be a movie I wanted to see as a kid. So with 'Tarzan', I always wanted to be in that movie. Here's the chance. Hell yeah! Let me be in that.
"It's still the thing that drives me. I'm still doing the movies I was pretending to do as a kid."

Ben Stiller still really appreciates Christine Taylor.
The 49-year-old actor, who has daughter Ella, 12, and son Quinlin, nine, with the blonde beauty, says their 14-year marriage is stronger than ever.
The 'Meet the Parents' star said: "We appreciate each other as much now as we ever have."
Ben believes the key to their long marriage is continuing to "pay attention" to his spouse.
He told Us Weekly magazine: "You must pay attention. People change over the years, and with that, the relationship changes."
Christine, 43, recently admitted their relationship has changed for the better.
She said: "It's all change for the better. Right? We're older, we're wiser.
"I found a picture of us from 15 years ago, and I saw youth. You don't see [the change] on a daily basis. We looked like kids. Now we look like parents."
While they are very supportive of each other, the blonde beauty admitted their children are often embarrassed by their behaviour.
She said: "I said to my daughter, 'You can talk to me about anything. I'm a cool mom. You don't have to be embarrassed. You can tell me anything.' And she goes, 'You just saying that made you uncool.'
"We're at the age where our daughter gets embarrassed of us no matter what we do."

Kendall Jenner is getting acting lessons.
The 19-year-old model's mother and manager Kris Jenner, is focusing all her efforts on looking after the teenager's career and is reportedly eager for her to carve out a career in Hollywood this year.
A source said: "Kris told the whole family that in 2015, her priority would no longer be Kim [Kardashian West] - it would be Kendall.
"She thinks Kendall could be the next Audrey Hepburn and is getting her acting lessons."
But the 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' star's older half-sister, 34, and her younger sister, Kylie, 17, are furious with Kris for going out of her way to help Kendall succeed.
The insider said: "Poor Kylie is really struggling with Kendall's success and her own self-esteem, and Kim feels betrayed and abandoned. It was the last thing they needed to hear."
The duo are both said to be plotting to unveil controversial photo-shoots to prevent Kendall from hogging the spotlight, and Kylie is also eager to release her debut single with her brother-in-law Kanye West.
The source explained to America's Star magazine: "Kylie is planning a risqué photo-shoot as soon as she turns 18 and is trying to get Kanye to record a song with her. And Kim has some seriously attention-getting antics in the works. She has no intention of playing second fiddle to anyone, least of all her little sister. Things are going to get very interesting."
Kim previously insisted she wasn't jealous of Kendall, who has modelled for a string of top designers including Chanel and Givenchy.
She said: "I'm her biggest cheerleader - we talk all the time."

Jack O'Connell learned to be less selfish making 'Unbroken'.
The 26-year-old actor lived on 400 calories a day and lost 30lbs to play Olympian and prisoner of war Louis Zamperini in the biopic and says his dedication to telling someone else's story was a very "maturing" experience.
He explained: "It was very maturing. I had to prioritise someone else - Louis.
"I had to prioritise his story over anything I desired at the time - diet and what have you. I got to know what it took to really devote yourself and not listen to the voice in your head that's selfish and ego.
"So that taught me a lot and that was a vital lesson and I feel more equipped having learned it."
Jack admits he learned a lot from his director Angelina Jolie, and though she has promised to always be on hand to offer him advice, she thinks he will be more "proud" if he steps away and makes it on his own.
He told Grazia magazine: "Angelina's definitely given me an insight into how to do it and do it properly.
"She's keen to remind me that if I ever need advice or anything [she's there] but I'm an adult and I've got a pair of b******s. I can stand on my own two feet and the more I do that, the more proud of me she's going to be.
"So I guess in that sense it does motivate me, but I don't want to cling on to the woman, you know."

Dame Joan Collins has slammed modern actresses as "sheep".
The 81-year-old actress thinks there isn't enough diversity on the red carpet and was left unimpressed by most of the fashions on display at the recent Golden Globe awards.
She said: "I thought the best dressed was Amal Clooney. Jennifer Lopez and Meryl Streep also looked good. Otherwise I didn't think much of the fashion.
"There seems to be a certain sheep mentality among some of the actresses to look the same.
"When I came here [to Hollywood] I was 21, which was still the golden age - Lana Turner, Barbara Stanwyck, Susan Hayward, Marilyn Monroe... Everybody had their own style.
"These women, including Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor, did their own hair and make-up and they always looked incredible."
Joan - who married fifth husband Percy Gibson in 2002 - doesn't understand why actresses choose to undergo cosmetic surgery because she thinks the results look "horrific".
She said: "I don't want to look like a plastic Barbie doll. I saw a very famous actress the other day. You could see the lumps under her skin from the fillers and she could barely move her face. It was horrific.
"Elective surgery is scary. A legendary actress memorably sent her maid to test the end results of the surgery and when she came back, she looked so good she decided to try it. The doctor cut a nerve and she was disfigured for life."
However, the 'Royals' star admits she has been tempted to go under the knife in the past, but is too "scared".
She added in an interview with Britain's HELLO! magazine: "I have thought about it. I pull my face back and think, 'Wouldn't I look better like this?' But I am too scared.
"I like my laugh lines - it would be crazy not to have any at my age - and luckily I have good cheekbones."

Jennifer Aniston nearly missed out on her role in 'Cake'.
The 45-year-old star - who plays Claire Simmons in the drama - has revealed that another actress was initially lined up for the part.
She said: "I was just ready to do it and this came along, and it wasn't available so I had to wait and wait, and just beg to get in that room."
When asked why it wasn't available, she added: "It means it was offered to another actress at that time ... It just didn't work out [for her] and so luckily for me, I got to throw my hat into the ring."
The star - who is well known for her parts in comedies including 'Horrible Bosses' and TV sitcom, 'Friends', where she played Rachel Green' - also admitted that she saw the opportunity to star in 'Cake' as a "challenge".
Speaking on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, she said: "I wanted to challenge myself, I really did. I wanted to do it and I was tired of ... I love comedies. We all love comedies, we like to laugh, we want to escape, but I also know there's so much in all of us actors, I'm sure, that we want to explore."
Meanwhile, Jennifer previously admitted that she had to reduce her exercise levels ahead of filming so that she could put on the weight required for the part.
She shared: "I basically just didn't work out for two-and-a-half months.
"I stopped working out and I stopped being as careful about my diet as I normally am. I was still healthy, but I'd allow more."
