Rooney Mara is in talks to play Mary Magdalene in a new movie.
The 30-year-old actress is in negotiations to take on the role which is set to be an "authentic and humanistic" depiction of the Biblical character, according to Deadline.
Mary Magdalene was a follower of Jesus Christ, who as a repent sinner was saved by the Christian Saviour, who is considered to be the Son of God by followers of the faith.
In Western Christianity Mary has often been depicted as a prostitute but although she is named in all four gospels in the New Testament she is never referenced as a prostitute.
Mary is considered a saint by the Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and Lutheran churches and considered to be a model of repentance, and it is believed that after the crucifixion of Jesus she travelled to the South of France to preach his teachings.
Universal Pictures International Productions is partnering with See-Saw Films to produce the film, which will be directed by Garth Davis.
Davis and Rooney worked together on the forthcoming movie 'Lion'.
Davis thinks she is perfect to play Mary.
He said: "Rooney's raw, brave approach to performances, coupled with her deeply magnetic inner life, holds all the dimensions needed to bring to life one of history's most misunderstood women - Mary Magdalene. Having worked with Rooney on 'Lion', I know she is a once in a lifetime talent."
Rooney's performance as temporary shopgirl Therese Belivet in 1950s-set romantic drama 'Carol' earned her a nomination for the Best Supporting Actress prize at the Academy Awards.

Lily James was thrilled she got to "save men" in 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies'.
The 26-year-old beauty stars as protagonist Elizabeth Bennet in the mash-up movie - which sees a zombie apocalypse descend on the adapted setting of the Jane Austin novel - and has revealed she got a kick out being the "action hero" that saves the day and appear alongside the other Bennet sisters Kitty, Lydia and Mary, played by Suki Waterhouse, Ellie Bamber and Millie Brady respectively.
Speaking on the red carpet of the film's European premiere in London on Monday night (01.02.16), she said: "I got to fight. I got to save the men. I got to be part of the Bennet sisters who are the coolest group of girls and I got to be an action hero ... we were really tight. We also had to train. There was blood, sweat and tears and we fought together and that really bonded us in a strong way."
In the film, a plague falls upon 19th century England and Elizabeth unites with Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley) to drive out the undead.
Lily's boyfriend, former 'Doctor Who' star Matt Smith, plays Mr. Collins in the Burr Steers directed film, which is an adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's parody novel.
Matt thinks it was very "cool" and "sexy" to see the female cast - which also includes 'Game of Thrones' star Lena Headey who plays Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Aisling Loftus (Charlotte Lucas) - be "kick-ass ninjas" in the movie.
He said: "Isn't that quite nice though that it is the women who are the kick-arse ninjas? I think that is quite cool, a refreshing spin and quite sexy.

Leonardo DiCaprio is set to produce 'The Sandcastle Empire'.
The Oscar nominated star will adapt the post-apocalyptic Young Adult novel 'The Sandcastle Empire' through his Appian Way productions, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The novel, written by Kayla Olson, is set in 2049 when the Earth is in turmoil due to climate change and overpopulation and a radical faction known as the Wolfpack overthrows the government.
'The Sandcastle Empire' features heroine Eden, who discovers she is the key to bringing down the faction.
Leonardo is a passionate environmentalist and gave a speech at the World Economic Forum's Crystal Awards in Davos, Switzerland, last month where he announced a $15 million donation from his foundation to environmental projects.
He said: "We simply cannot allow the corporate greed of the coal, oil and gas industries to determine the future of humanity.
"Those entities with a financial interest in preserving this destructive system have denied, and even covered-up the evidence of our changing climate. Enough is enough. You know better. The world knows better. History will place the blame for this devastation squarely at their feet.
"Our planet cannot be saved unless we leave fossil fuels in the ground where they belong. Twenty years ago, we described this problem as an addiction. Today, we possess the means to end this reliance.
"Generosity is the key to our future. With that I am pleased to announce today over $15 million in new commitments from LDF to fast-track cutting edge sustainability and conservation projects around the world."

Mark Ruffalo thinks he offended Michael Keaton when they first met.
The Hollywood actors appear together in the movie 'Spotlight' and during filming the 'Hulk' star tried to compliment his new friend on his impressive career "renaissance", but it resulted in an "awkward moment" for the pair.
Mark, 48, explained: "The first time I'd met Michael was when we were rehearsing. We'd walked out of rehearsal together and I said, 'Hey, where are you going?' He told me he was going somewhere about ten blocks away and I said, 'I'm going that way. I'll walk you there.' We start walking and I say to him, 'I've been a big fan for such a long time and this renaissance you're having is amazing, this is kind of re-emergence,' and he said, 'Really? I didn't know I went away.'
"I still had nine blocks to walk with the man. I was like, 'No, no, no! You're right, of course. Of course, you haven't gone away at all.' It was a very uncomfortable moment."
Despite his slip up, the moment passed and Mark still believes Keaton - who was famed for starring as Batman in the 1989 and 1992 blockbusters and received universal acclaim and plaudits for his performance as Riggan Thomson in 2014's 'Birdman' - is "amazing" and is delighted he has achieved such huge success.
Speaking of his admiration for the 64-year-old actor, he told Empire: "It's amazing what he's doing. Actors, you kind of have these ebbs and flows. These moments where you're in your glory - where you're really cracking - and moments where you're not."

Keira Knightley is in talks to star in biopic 'Colette.'
If she boards the cast, the 30-year-old star will play the renowned French novelist - also known as Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette - who was nominated for a Nobel Prize for literature in 1948 and is famed for writing 'Gigi', a novel about a young Parisian girl being groomed for a career as a courtesan.
However the film will tell the true story of the author - who was born in 1873 - and her first marriage to the fashionable socialite Willy Gauthier-Villars, who was also a writer and music critic and her mentor.
The story goes that Willy locked his wife up to write novels for him that subsequently became huge best sellers and made him rich, though Colette inevitably rose out of his shadow.
Filming is due to start in May in Budapest and
'Carol's Pam Koffler and Christine Vachon will produce the title, along with Elizabeth Karlsen, Stephen Woolley and Bold Films.
Chairman of Bold Films Michel Litvak said about the British actress: "Keira is impeccably suited to step into the role of the iconic Colette in the early 1900s, who pushed the envelope in a time when women writers were shunned and bisexuality was scandalous. We are honored to bring her story to the big screen."
Kiera - who has eight-month-old daughter Edie with husband James Righton - recently finished her Broadway debut in Helene Edmundson's 'Therese Raquin' which is based on the 1867 novel of the same name by Émile Zola.

Michael Sheen has landed a role in 'Finding Dory'.
The 46-year-old actor will be voicing a character in the upcoming animated sequel - which is due for release this summer - though he hasn't explained who he will play.
Asked at the end of an interview with the Doug Loves Movies podcast if he had anything to plug, he said: "'Finding Nemo 2' should be coming out at some point... which I'm in."
It is unclear what role Michael takes, but because it is so close to the release of the movie, it is possible he could be re-voicing a character for the UK version of the film, though that has been deemed unlikely.
'Finding Dory' sees the forgetful blue tang - who is voiced by Ellen DeGeneres - go on a quest to find her parents but she ends up at a research facility in California.
Michael - who can next be seen as The White Rabbit in 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' - recently slammed the "snobbishness" of the movie industry and insisted he just looks for roles that "excite" him.
He said: "People will say to me, 'You do things like 'The Queen' and 'Frost/Nixon' and then you do 'Twilight', 'Tron' and 'Underworld'?'
"There's no room for snobbishness, it doesn't matter what genre you're working in, you just make a connection with the work, and if it gets you going, it excites you and it's the kind of work I'd like to go and see and I have a wide range of tastes."
