Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker pretended to forget lines to relax Mandip Gill

Jodie Whittaker pretended to forget her lines during Mandip Gill’s ‘Doctor Who’ audition.
The 37-year-old star – who had been cast as the titular Time Lord by this point – wanted to make the actress feel more comfortable as she was trying out for a role in the BBC sci-fi series, to help get rid of any nerves.
Speaking to Radio Times magazine, Mandip said: "I didn’t think it came across like that… [laughs] The great thing was, you didn’t know your lines!"
Jodie admitted: "I did that on purpose."
Mandip, 32, didn’t realise her co-star was helping her out during the audition, but said it had the desired effect.
She added: "Really? Thanks, because it made me feel at ease."
Jodie explained: "It’s so intimidating when the other actor knows all their lines, but there’s meant to be room for playing and having fun.
"I knew you’d be more comfortable if I wasn’t overly prepared."
Tosin Cole – who plays Ryan alongside Mandip’s Yaz and Bradley Walsh’s Graham – revealed his first impressions of his co-stars, and he joked ‘The Chase’ host is "the most unstable" when it comes to his moods during filming.
He said: "Jodie’s the most consistent because she’s always quite high-energy, isn’t she?
"Showbiz [Tosin’s nickname for Bradley] is up and down – one minute he’s grumpy, one minute he’s pranking, or he’s grumpy and he’s pranking. You never know with Brad – he’s the most unstable."
Showrunner Chris Chibnall recently hinted the next series – which will feature Jodie as the Doctor – will be back in 2021.
He teased: "We have very big, ambitious plans for our third series together … it will be next year sometime, hopefully, unless my holiday goes on for a really long time, which is always tempting."
