EastEnders star Ross Kemp thinks Sharongate ‘still holds up’ after 26 years

Ross Kemp thinks the iconic ‘EastEnders’ episode ‘Sharongate’ still "holds itself" after 26 years.

The former soap star – who has played Grant Mitchell on and off from 1990 to 2016 – has reflected on the memorable ep, which saw his character clash with on-screen brother Phil (Steve McFadden) over sleeping with his wife Sharon Mitchell (Letitia Dean).

The episode, which was re-shown this week with the BBC soap off air due to the coronavirus pandemic, first aired in October 1994 and features Grant revealing Sharon’s affair with Phil to the Queen Vic pub, by playing a tape recording over the sound system.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly on ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain’, Ross said: "The one I watched – the one that was 26 years old, Sharongate.

"And do you know what, I have to say – apart from the fact that I’ve aged significantly in those years, I thought it still held itself.

"Obviously still dated, but it sort of held. The writing was fantastic."

Earlier this week, Ross revealed he reflected on the loss of his grandfather to find the emotion needed for the heartbreaking scene.

He explained: "That was manufactured by me, it wasn’t in the bottle. So we had a snot continuity problem.

"So I had to go off in the corner and cry a bit more, using my emotional recall.

"My granddad had just passed, so I was sort of using that to get myself in the mood. But everyone was so helpful, everyone was really kind."

The 55-year-old actor-turned-documentary-maker previously admitted he would be keen to return to his roots.

He said: "I’d like to do some acting. Yes, really. I need to do something different and less all-consuming. TV, film, theatre – I don’t mind. Anything that’s good and challenging I’ll do."
