Ricky Gervais says Derek is "a superhero".
The comedian has explained he "looks up to" the titular character from his popular sitcom, insisting he doesn't listen to those who criticise him for portraying a man with learning difficulties.
He told The Sun newspaper's TV Magazine: "You can't let the criticism affect you. All my feedback comes from Twitter.I love it when my show affects someone - whether it makes them laugh or cry.
"Anyway, I've never considered Derek to have Down's syndrome or to be autistic. And even if he is, what's wrong with such a positive role model?
"I look up to Derek, he's better than everyone because he's the nicest person in the world."
The 'Muppets Most Wanted' star also confirmed 'Derek' will return for a third series because there are still members of the public who are only just understanding the character.
He said: "Yes [there will be a third series], there's still people just 'getting' it.
"It look me three goes at presenting the Golden Globes before people got that I was telling jokes rather than trying to ruin careers.
"'Derek' is an acquired taste, but every show I've done has been like landing at Normandy with bullets hitting."

Robert Pattinson is "borderline obsessed" with 'The X Factor'.
The Hollywood hunk has admitted he can't get enough of Simon Cowell's talent shows, even though he knows the singing competition doesn't fit in with his own "musical beliefs".
Speaking to The Sun newspaper, he said: "I know 'The X Factor' goes against my musical beliefs and I shouldn't love it - but I do, I really do!
"I am borderline obsessed with Simon Cowell shows and spend my nights in bed watching them on my tablet."
Later this year, both the media mogul and former judge Cheryl Cole will make their return to the panel, and Robert can't wait to see them reunited on the show.
He added: "I am very excited about his return to the UK 'X Factor' with Cheryl Cole."
Meanwhile, the star suggested he prefers a quiet night in rather than the glitz and glamour of the showbiz world, claiming he doesn't buy into the idea of partying in Los Angeles.
He insisted; "Everybody assumes because you live in LA that every night you are at cool parties or the opening of something or other but my reality is very different."

Kym Marsh is dating the ex-boyfriend of Stephanie Waring.
The 'Coronation Street' actress - who is said to have split from Matt Baker three weeks ago - has reportedly been on a couple of dates with the 'Hollyoaks' star's former beau Dan Hooper following their break-up in January.
An insider told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "She is gutted. Stephanie was heartbroken when Dan ended the relationship and thought they may get back together.
"Until he told her he wanted to split, she was unaware of any problems. She was hoping to announce an engagement. Now, to learn he has moved on so swiftly - it has hit her hard.
"She has spoken to both Dan and Kym but neither of them believe they are doing anything wrong. In their eyes, they are single and have just started dating."
Meanwhile, a friend of Kym's has claimed the soap star - who plays Michelle Connor in 'Corrie' - and Dan have "grown close" and want to see where it leads.
The source said: "They've grown close in recent weeks. They've been on two dates and are looking forward to spending more time together. But it's early days."

Emmerdale's Donna Windsor's won't tell her family she has cancer as she tries build her daughter April's relationship with her father Marlon Dingle.
The character, played by Verity Rushworth, recently discovered she is suffering from the serious illness, but she wants to avoid telling people close to her since doesn't want it to influence her ex-husband's relationship with his daughter, and would prefer their bond to develop naturally.
Speaking about the heart-wrenching storyline, Verity told Inside Soap magazine: "Her priority is Marlon and April's relationship and making sure that he, Bob and everyone else accept her into their lives.
"Donna wants the relationship to be organic and real before she tells them, so that her illness isn't a factor in all of this."
Donna was rushed to hospital by her stepfather Bob Hope (Tony Audenshaw) after hitting her head and feeling woozy, but once alone with the doctor, Donna revealed the extent of her Mesothelioma - which attacks the protective layer of the body's organs.
Talking about the illness, Verity explained: "With people who suffer from Mesothelioma, the rare form of cancer that Donna has, the symptoms are really subtle.
"It's just a bit of breathlessness and coughing. Donna is still working for the police and no one knows she's ill, so she's hiding it very well. But what's happening inside her body is actually progressing quickly, even though she's still able to keep it from friends and family."
Verity, 28, has returned to 'Emmerdale' for a five-month stint after initially playing Donna for 11 years between 1998 and 2009.

Joey Essex has been signed to a modelling agency.
The former 'The Only Way is Essex' star - who has his own clothing boutique Fusey - has decided to embark on a career in modelling after joining Select Model Management.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "Joey loves his fashion so he's overjoyed about signing to Select. They believe he could become one of their biggest clients."
Joey quit 'TOWIE' last year and went on to appear on the celebrity diving show 'Splash!', before taking part in the thirteenth series of 'I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!'
After the 23-year-old hunk proved to be a big hit with the viewers, he then went on to land his one-off documentary last month 'Educating Joey Essex', which saw him travel to South Africa to learn about different cultures.
Joey is also being lined up to appear in a programme which will send him around the world, similar to Karl Pilkington's adventures in the hit Sky 1 show 'An Idiot Abroad'.
A source said previously: "It's early stages but it rapidly became clear while filming 'Educating Joey Essex' that it was going to be TV gold and ITV2 is absolutely desperate to get him signed up for more.
"The show is going to be like 'An Idiot Abroad'. Think Joey being dumped in the middle of a remote part of Australia or in the centre of buzzing Tokyo - it would completely blow his mind."
Joey - who has just rekindled his romance with ex-fiancee Sam Faiers - has also released his 'Essex Anthems' compilation CD, which is set for chart success, and his autobiography will be released in May.

Catherine Tyldesley thinks her character in 'Coronation Street' is "perfect barmaid material."
The 30-year-old actress, who plays feisty Eva Price, is looking forward to returning to the ITV soap and pulling pints in the Rover's Return pub in Weatherfield for the first time.
Catherine told The Daily Star newspaper: "I am thrilled to bits.
"Eva is a perfect soap barmaid material. She's feisty, gobby and one hell of a gossip. I consider it a privilege.
"When the producers told me [she would be a barmaid], I wanted to hug them. The pub is the heart of the show, really."
She also joked: "Eva's like Norris Cole but with big boobs!"
Current barmaid Tina McIntyre - played by 26-year-old actress Michelle Keegan - will be murdered in the show and the tragedy affects most of the characters.
And the girls, who are close friends, are going up against each other for this year's sexiest star at the soap awards.
Catherine said: "I do laugh every time people mention my nomination as Soap's Sexiest Female.
"I mean look at Michelle Keegan and look and Georgia May Foote? They so gorgeous! It's very flattering but I vote for Michelle every year."
But Catherine agrees her character is appealing to male viewers despite sometimes being shy.
She explained: "She's very sexually confident and she uses her sexuality to get what she wants. Eva doesn't think twice about getting her boobs out to get achieve her ends. It's her confidence that's sexy."

'Party Wright Around the World' has been axed by ITV2.
Mark Wright's travel programme - which showed the hunky star organising global parties - has been given the chop after just one series due to poor ratings.
This will be the former 'The Only Way is Essex' star's fourth consecutive show to get dropped after the failure of his 'Hollywood Nights' series in 2012, 'Take Me Out's spin-off 'The Gossip, and his gameshow 'My Man Can', which was cancelled before it even aired.
An insider told The Sun newspaper: "Mark has a lot of fans and was a huge hit on 'TOWIE' and 'I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!' [in 2011 when he came in second place to Dougie Poynter], but the shows he has done since then have been turkeys. He needs to find a show that works for him soon otherwise bosses may look elsewhere."
'Party Wright Around The World' kicked off with 350,000 viewers in February, but slumped to just 206,000 within the space of a month.
Mark's spokeswoman insists the 27-year-old star was fine about the decision to not go ahead with a second series of the show as he's already got other plans in the pipeline.
She said: "Mark was delighted by the fan reaction to the show. It was only ever meant to be one series."
Mark - who is engaged to 'Coronation Street' actress Michelle Keegan - left 'TOWIE' in 2011 and has attempted to build a career as a presenter ever since.

Tom Baker has no advice for new 'Doctor Who' star Peter Capaldi on playing the character.
The 80-year-old screen legend - who portrayed the Fourth Doctor from 1974 to 1981 - insists every actor who steps into the TARDIS has to find his own interpretation of the Time Lord and believes 'The Thick of It' star will bring his own energy to the role.
When asked if he had any tips for Doctor-in-waiting Peter, Tom said: "No I don't have any advice for anybody and certainly not somebody taking over 'Doctor Who'. He's a very accomplished actor, I've seen him do lots of mean things, you know swearing into his mobile phone. I'm sure he'll be good. Nobody has ever failed, have they? So they you are, he'll be all right."
Tom made a return the BBC sci-fi show for the 50th anniversary special last November appearing in a mysterious scene opposite former Doctor Matt Smith in 'The Day of the Doctor'.
The veteran actor thoroughly enjoyed working with Matt, 31, and appreciated the help he offered him on set.
Tom recalled: "Going to Cardiff on a winter's morning at 4 o'clock couldn't possibly be fun, but Matt was nice. I didn't understand the cameras any more because of the HD, so I was a bit uneasy, but Matt Smith was a charming young man. We did this little scene that people liked a lot."
Tom has always been very proud of portraying the Doctor and he quipped it's only been in recent years that's he allowed himself to accept that another 12 actors have played the role as well.
He joked: "It's only recently that it dawned on me that were other Doctors, I don't know them you know and I've got no desire to know them and of course I never watched them, I thought it was only fair never to watch them because I never watched myself, all I wanted to do was do it ... But me and the other Doctors nod to each other at conventions."
Tom will be seen on TV screens as the Doctor once again as The Horror Channel is airing adventures from the classic series starting from today (18.04.14).
