Tate McRae explores her ‘vulnerabilities’ through music

Tate McRae is happy to explore her “vulnerabilities and insecurities” through her music.

The 22-year-old pop star has enjoyed a meteoric rise in recent years, and Tate has now opened up about her creative process, revealing that she’s happy to share her vulnerabilities with her fans.

Tate told Billboard: “I want people to listen to my music and feel like the best, most elevated version of themselves. That’s what I approach in songwriting. I’m either honing in on my deepest vulnerabilities and insecurities or I’m dreaming as big as I can.”

Tate also admitted to being amazed by her own success.

The Greedy hitmaker – who started her career as a dancer, before switching her focus to making music – said: “Obviously, my true initial passion for all of this was writing, writing short stories or poetry, and starting it in my bedroom.

“Creating a career like this from back in my bedroom in Calgary, Alberta, is pretty crazy to me. Thinking about how much I’ve done means the world to me.”

Asked to define a hit song, Tate replied: “For me, a hit song is when all the puzzle pieces come together when the song feels like the full story has been told, there’s nothing left to say, and no fine-tuning is needed.

“You can feel that in your chest, and the listener can feel that in their chest. The exact message comes across perfectly. That, to me, feels like a hit song.”

In 2025, Tate admitted that she finds comparisons to Britney Spears to be “flattering and scary”.

Tate is a huge fan of the chart-topping icon – but she thinks it’s currently unfair to compare her to Britney.

The singer told The Independent: “I find that flattering and scary.

“It’s such a crazy statement because no one can compare to Britney Spears. It’s like comparing someone to Michael Jackson! That’s the blueprint!”

Tate also believes female stars aren’t given enough credit for their own success.

The Sports Car hitmaker reflected: “It’s a tale as old as time. We’ve seen this with every single iconic female artist before.

“It’s never just them who thought of the great idea or who came up with the music video, or who creatively directed the whole show.”
