Sue Johnston jealous of Downton Abbey costumes

Sue Johnston is jealous of the costumes which her fellow ‘Downton Abbey’ stars get to wear.

The former ‘Coronation Street’ star plays Gladys Denker, a maid for the Crawley family in the ITV period drama, and has confessed that while she enjoyed playing the part, she would love to have tried on the fancy frocks which the privileged family members got to wear.

She told The Sun newspaper: "I did look enviously at the beautiful clothes they had on. I don’t mind whether I am ‘upstairs’ or ‘downstairs’. The only difference is you’d have had nicer frocks if you were upstairs."

The 70-year-old actress made her debut on the popular programme on Sunday evening (26.10.14) but despite enjoying an incredible acting career she admits she frets about the roles available to her now she is an older star.

The ‘Royle Family’ star added: "As you get older, I think the parts you’re offered are more interesting, actually – but there are so few, and so many of us. So it always remains tricky."

However, the BAFTA-nominated thespian revealed that she is satisfied with her career progression because she has been able to play a range of characters.

She added: "I feel lucky I haven’t been pigeon-holed. And often people don’t want to be.

"I feel privileged to have played different things – because it’s less boring that way."
