Spice Girls take back Spice World movie rights and plan fresh re-release

The Spice Girls have regained ownership of the Spice World movie and are planning to re-release it.

Melanie C has revealed the 1997 musical movie is back with its rightful owners and has been re-edited to be re-presented to fans.

Sporty Spice told The Louis Theroux podcast: “It was a big hit, and it’s not on any streaming services currently.

“It’s not available at the moment. It will be, because there were a lot of people that owned it. It was kind of all over the place.

“So we’ve had to come together. The Spice Girls now fully own it, so we will be presenting it at some point in hopefully the not-too-distant future for people to enjoy.”

Among the many celebrity cameos in the flick was disgraced comedian Garry Glitter and the Say You’ll Be There hitmaker revealed they’ve edited him out.

Melanie said: “While the movie was getting edited, we were like, ‘Oh, s***, he’s got to go’.”

The 52-year-old singer said a lot that what went on in the movie actually happened the real world.

She said: “That was really how we were. That was our experience. You know, we’d been out there, we’d been promoting for a year when we sat down and the movie was being written.

“So a lot of those experiences that are the through line of the movie were the things that we were experiencing.”

The girl group – also including Mel B (Sporty), Emma Bunton (Baby), Geri Horner (Ginger) and Lady Victoria Beckham (Posh) – are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut single Wannabe this year.

Although there are no plans to mark the occasion with a tour, Melanie says the girls have discussed some “great opportunities” for activities outside of the milestone.

She said of the business side of things: “We don’t have them (meetings) often enough because it’s still a business.

“You know, there are still things we have to take care of. You know? We have our trademark, and we have lots of great merchandise out there, of course. This year’s a big anniversary.”

When asked about the anniversary, she insisted “nothing is in the works”.

She said: “We want to. Everything is in discussion. But it’s a really positive time for us.

“We’ll see. There’s nothing in the works, so it’s obviously not going to be anything in time for the anniversary. But we are discussing lots of great opportunities.”

Melanie says she’ll always be a Spice Girl and all five of them will be included in everything they do – even Victoria who sat out their last reunion tour in 2019.

She said: “No one’s left.

“I love it. When I’m doing shows and stuff, and if people want to introduce me, when they say former Spice Girl, I’m really offended.

“Because once a Spice Girl, always a Spice Girl. I think we all feel like that. There might be times we choose not to work in that arena, but we’re still Spice Girls.”
