Sir Tom Moore receives his knighthood at Windsor Castle

Sir Tom Moore has received his knighthood from the Queen.

The 100-year-old former British army officer has received the prestigious honour during an unprecedented personal ceremony at Windsor Castle, where he was supported by various family members, including daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore, son-in-law Colin Ingram, grandson Benji and granddaughter Georgia.

Captain Tom was awarded the knighthood in recognition of his charitable efforts amid the coronavirus pandemic, having raised as much as £33 million for health service charities.

Captain Tom captured the imagination of the country when he began to walk laps of his garden in aid of charity in an initial effort to raise £1,000 by his 100th birthday.

He also featured in a cover version of the song ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, with proceeds going to charity, and in the process, he became the oldest person to achieve a UK number one.

Due to the pandemic, Buckingham Palace has decided to postpone a number of investitures.

However, a special exception has been made for Captain Tom.

He previously admitted to being "overwhelmed" after being awarded a knighthood for his fundraising efforts.

The war veteran wrote on Twitter: "I am absolutely overwhelmed. Never for one moment could I have imagined I would be awarded with such a great honour.

"I’d like to thank Her Majesty The Queen, the Prime Minister and the Great British public. I will remain at your service…

"This started as something small and I’ve been overwhelmed by the gratitude and love from the British public and beyond.

"We must take this opportunity to recognise our frontline heroes of the National Health Service who put their lives at risk every day to keep us safe. (sic)"

Prime Minister Boris Johnson previously acknowledged that Captain Tom’s efforts "inspired the whole country" amid the pandemic.

He said: "On behalf of everyone who has been moved by his incredible story, I want to say a huge thank you. He’s a true national treasure."
