Maggie Gyllenhaal says therapy has helped her understand herself better.
The 'Honourable Woman' star, who has daughters Ramona, seven, and Gloria, two, with husband Peter Sarsgaard, admits she has "a raging temper," but has become "much more vulnerable" since becoming a mother.
The 36-year-old actress told the UK's The Guardian newspaper: "Therapy was incredibly enlightening. I don't think it's only necessary if you're unwell - it's a useful tool for me to understand my own mind and how it works."
The brunette beauty insists she isn't perfect and is scared of "interacting with other people."
She said: "I have a raging temper. I'll shout and scream, then it passes like a wicked storm.
"I'm claustrophobic. It's taken me years to be OK on the subway, but in taking my daughter to school I've conquered it. Don't even talk to me about elevators."
But Maggie says motherhood has made her a lot less judgemental.
She said: "Motherhood brings you to your knees in a way that doesn't leave room for you to judge others. It makes you see that there's no ideal - a constant struggle, constantly compromising, but ultimate love."
She added: "I used to be so tough. I've become much more vulnerable as I've gotten older. We all soften with age. I feel a lot more sensitive and less strident in the world than when I was in my 20s. I had more fight then, but I prefer the way I am now."
The 'Mona Lisa Smile' actress also claims she only found out her birth name last year.
She explained: "I needed my birth certificate, and when my dad found it, it said that my name was Margolit. It was a bit of a shock. I'd always thought my full name was Margaret - never heard of Margolit. Neither of my parents can remember how it got on the birth certificate."

Adam Levine can't wait to give up his bachelor status.
The 'Voice' USA judge is set to marry Behati Prinsloo in Mexico this summer and insists he has done everything on his bachelor bucket list.
He said: "I think I've probably had enough bachelor parties for all of the bachelors in Southern California. In my lifetime I've done it right. I've had plenty of fun. I did have a bachelor party, and it was cool and mellow.
"You never get everything out of your system. Because then you wouldn't have a system. You're always fighting something.
"I definitely feel like I'm sitting in the chair I'm supposed to be sitting in right now. It all feels very natural."
The Maroon 5 star likes to keep his relationship with the South African beauty private because it stays "special" that way.
He told People magazine: "My relationship with Behati is mine. It's not for anybody else. That's what makes the relationship special and intimate. The minute I start to share the deepest things in my life, I'm losing something."
Adam says he family helped him not go off the rails when he first found fame and as a result he was able to relate to his character in 'Begin Again,' who makes mistakes when he hits it big in the music world, because he struggled not to give into temptation earlier in his career.
He said: "This guy was me at a certain point. He's about to be lost and is losing it. Granted, it wasn't the same experience. But all of a sudden you have much more at your disposal, girls, money, alcohol, whatever. Your vices become magnified. You get to jump off the edge of a cliff, and if you jump off you're screwed. I've been so blessed. Thank God for my family and friends who supported me."

Michelle Heaton says her children inspired her to sacrifice her "womanhood".
The 34-year-old star has made the "heartbreaking " decision to undergo a full hysterectomy in an attempt to prevent ovarian cancer, and despite the tough situation she insisted it is something she has do for Faith, two, and five-month-old son Aaron Jay.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper, she said: "A hysterectomy is not just about giving up the chance for children - it's about giving up my womanhood.
"It's giving up everything about me, everything inside me - my breast tissue, my Fallopian tubes. Everything that's going to go is everything that sets me apart from a man.
"It's a heartbreaking and life-changing decision. Every time I look at my kids, I know why I'm doing this, so I'm around and there's no risk of ever leaving them without a mum.
The former 'Celebrity Big Brother' and 'The Big Reunion' star - who carries a mutated BRCA2 gene, giving her a 40 per cent chance of getting cancer - admitted she didn't want to wait until it was too late to make a decision.
She added: "I don't have time on my side. It's a waiting game and I'm not a gambling woman.
"Do I tempt fate? Do I play roulette and wait and see what happens? Then in four years I'm not around for the two beautiful children I do have.
"I wouldn't be around to face the consequences but my husband [Hugh Hanley] would blame himself for not egging me on to have this procedure."

John Legend says his wife was the "most drunk" at Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's wedding.
The 35-year-old singer and his partner Chrissy Teigen were both at the star couple's huge wedding in May, and while the booze was flowing at the bash, he admitted his wife was "right up there".
He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "The most drunk? Well, Chrissy was right but there, but I think that there was a lot of alcohol going around so there was a healthy competition."
Meanwhile, the 'All of Me' star also revealed he performed at the couple's extravagant wedding for free, and explained he was meant just play the hit single but ended up doing a much longer set after people kept asking for more.
He added: "Kanye just asked me to perform 'All of Me', and then people kept asking me to do more, so I did probably six of seven songs.
"It wasn't a paid gig. We've been friends for a long time, he signed me to my first record deal, so I wasn't going to charge him to play at his wedding. I'm charging everybody else though."

Keira Knightley felt "powerless" when she visited South Sudan.
The 29-year-old actress recently visited the war-torn country in North Eastern Africa with Oxfam and couldn't believe the devastation and fear she witnessed firsthand.
She said: "I try to keep abreast of current affairs and what's going on around the world, and you think you get used to images of conflict and poverty.
"But standing in the middle of a refugee camp, with thousands of people crushed into an area you could walk around in 20 minutes, where there's raw sewage everywhere and where the latrines have collapsed because the rainy season has hit, it really makes you go, 'F**k, this is horrendous'. The fear in the air is palpable, but you feel powerless."
Keira's visit has shocked her so much that she is determined to help the relief effort in any way she can.
She explained to Stylist magazine: "It made me realise how fortunate I am to live where I do and to have had the life that I've had, but also that, emotionally, we are essentially all the same ... Being in this terrible situation yet still making the best of what you've got takes incredible strength."

Victoria and David Beckham love to "poke fun" at one another.
While the fashion designer - who has children Brooklyn, 15, Romeo, 11, Cruz, nine, and Harper, three, with the former soccer star - takes herself seriously when she is working, she and her husband love nothing more than to make each other laugh.
She said: "David and I tease each other a lot. Yes, you have to take yourself seriously professionally, but we also poke fun at each other."
Victoria credits her husband for giving her the "security and encouragement" she has needed to progress in her career.
She said: "I wouldn't be where I am without David. He gives me the security and encouragement to do what I do. I do the same for him."
Victoria turned 40 in April but wasn't upset about reaching the milestone age as she has achieved so much.
She told Britain's Vogue magazine: "I looked at it and said to myself, 'I have four incredible children, an incredible husband, a business that's doing very, very well.' I've worked hard and achieved a lot. I don't think I could have achieved much more."
Looking back on her teenage years, the only thing the former Spice Girls star would change is her lack of confidence.
She said: "I've always worked hard and had a lot of fun so there's nothing I would change. But I was very self-conscious... My weight was always up and down and my skin was always a problem."

Alexander Skarsgard loves to "disconnect" from society.
The 'True Blood' actor jumped at the chance to join a charity trek to the South Pole last year - alongside Britain's Prince Harry and a number of injured service men and women - because he finds isolating trips "liberating".
He explained: "I've been fascinated by Antarctica since I was a kid, and when this opportunity came up, I desperately wanted it to work out.
"I was shooting a movie called 'The Giver' in South Africa and fortunately I was able to rap in time.
"I went straight to Antarctica for a month. I love just being disconnected like that.
"The year before, I sailed across the Atlantic. It took three weeks and was kind of a similar experience in the sense of being completely present in the moment. You don't have your cell phone, no email. It's very liberating in a way, and a good excuse to not be reachable for a month."
The trek was originally meant to be a race between three teams, but they merged because the punishing conditions meant just getting to the finish became the ultimate goal and Alexander thinks it was the "right call".
He told Britain's Glamour magazine: "If you pass out and it's -40 degrees, you can get frostbite in seconds.
"It was definitely the right call because some people did get frostbite and had issues with the elevation.
"The race aspect of it wasn't important, it was more for motivation and to make it more fun, but the whole point was to make a documentary about these amazing men and women and for them to tell their stories and to inspire other people.
"The most important thing was to get all 12 soldiers to the South Pole and we did that."

Kim Kardashian has fuelled rumours she is moving to New York City.
The 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' star, who was recently spotted viewing a $21 million apartment in SoHo, confirmed she and husband Kanye West are on the hunt for a new base there shortly after it was revealed they plan to sell their $11 million Bel Air home "very soon" as they are fed up of waiting for renovations to be complete.
The 33-year-old beauty wrote on her blog: "I went apartment hunting in NYC with Simon [Huck] and my mom...Kendall [Jenner] came too."
She added: "It's crazy to see the different between Los Angeles real estate and NYC real-estate."
The group were spotted checking out a lavish apartment in the city last week that was recently put on the market by Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner.
The couple's real estate agent Fredrik Eklund also confirmed he is helping the couple find their dream home in the city.
He wrote on Instagram: "Ok so we give up. Totally give up. We tried to keep it a secret for the longest time that we were working with @kimkardashian and Kanye but it was impossible as there were like one hundred photographers outside each of our listings and now the photos are everywhere."
A source previously revealed the couple, who have 12-month-old daughter North West, are scrambling to complete work on their Los Angeles home before putting it on the market because working on the house has become "too overwhelming."
The insider added: "They are such perfectionists that staying up-to-date with the latest appliances and home systems, etc., has been exhausting for them. They want to sell very soon, but they might just finish the house enough to get it on the market without trying to make it their perfect home."
