Nicole Richie and Joel Madden don't want to follow the example of their own parents.
The couple - who have children Harlow, six, and Sparrow, four - both saw their parents divorce when they were younger so vowed as soon as they learned they were expecting their first child to work hard as a "team" to provide their kids with a "healthy family life".
Speaking on 'Oprah: Where Are They Now?', she said: "We met and we were partners from day one.
"And from the second we found out we were going to parents together, we looked at each other and we said, 'OK, both of our parents are divorced. We both have had ups and downs with our parents and we don't really have a strong example of what a healthy family life is. But, we're recognising that now, so let's work at it and let's go through this together as a team.'
"It's been great. And I would say that's the easiest and hardest part."
The 32-year-old beauty - who married Joel, 35, in 2010 after four years together - likes to "explain" things to her children and be as honest and open as possible, offering them a "voice" in return.
She said: "I have to always come from a place of love and compassion with them.
"My kids operate best when I let them have a voice. I really explain things to them, because really, kids want to be told the truth. They just do. They just want you to be truthful.
"They can feel it and they know you. And they know you more than you know yourself."

Justin Theroux gives eggs as gifts.
The 'Leftovers' actor and fiancee Jennifer Aniston keep chickens at their Los Angeles home but he admits his kind gesture actually does him a favour as the birds lay more eggs than they are able to use.
Speaking to friend Chelsea Handler on 'Chelsea Lately', he said: "We have chickens at the house. There's one cock in the house. I don't want them keeping me awake in the morning.
"We have too many of them. We have about 10 chickens and each of them lays a couple a day, so we have too many eggs. But they always think we're being really sweet, like this farm and table thing where you bring a bunch of eggs. We're just slipping on eggs at the house."
The 42-year-old actor recently admitted his life has "changed a lot" since he started dating the former 'Friends' actress three years ago, and he initially struggled to cope with the scrutiny their romance receives.
He said: "More people are like, 'Hey, man!' And I don't think that's from my role in 'John Adams'. But it only changed as much as I engaged with it, and I learned very quickly: don't ever engage with it. It was a learning curve, but it wasn't as traumatic as you might expect.
"It's [press coverage is] just annoying. Occasionally you'll get a stewardess congratulating you, on, I don't know, whatever, some three-headed baby we just had."

Ariana Grande no longer talks to her father.
The 'Problem' hitmaker - who recently had to cope with the death of her grandfather - has revealed that she fell out of touch with her dad last year but has come to terms with it.
She told Seventeen magazine: "It's private, but it happened last year. It took me so long to be OK with it. The thing that got me there was embracing the fact that that I am made up of half my dad, and a lot of my traits come from him. So much of me comes from my father, and for so long, I didn't like that about myself.
"I had to accept that it's OK not to get along with somebody and still love them."
Ariana, 21, who shot to fame on Nickelodeon's 'Victorious', admitted she has found dealing with fame difficult.
She explained: "It's tough to spend some of the most important years of your life in front of so many strangers who want to pick you apart. Insecurity has been the hardest thing I've had to overcome. I think everyone my age struggles with that because everyone strives for approval and wants to feel loved.
"I feel like for the first time in my life, I'm really OK. I used to freak out about everything all the time. I used to be like, 'Oh my God, somebody said this!' Everything used to be such a big deal! But now, I feel I can handle everything that comes my way with a calm energy."

Zoe Saldana is able to give her husband "support and love" because it is in her nature.
The 'Guardians of the Galaxy' actress - who is rumoured to be pregnant with twins - married artist Marco Perego last year and thinks it was meant to be that she met her life partner later in life.
She said: "We give each other a great deal of support and love but it wasn't because we found it in each other, we came that way and then got together.
"That's what I love about it. I do believe whatever's meant to be will be - but had the universe said, 'Let's just wait, he's going to come into your life later', I would've been fine on this journey I was on just knowing who the f**k I was."
The 36-year-old beauty admits she feels more "beautiful" now she has stopped worrying about her appearance so much and works out less.
She explained to Women's Health magazine: "This past year I've had to start letting go.
"My body dictated it as if saying, 'Slow the f**k down!'. And I struggle with that. I love to be an athlete.
"I've learnt to listen to myself, so whenever I don't feel like doing anything that starts with 'I should' then I don't.
"My body is less toned. I do look in the mirror and see things I don't want. My first reaction is I breathe and I think, 'I'm a woman, I'm 36, my body is changing'.
"I'm exactly where I want to be. I do feel beautiful in a way that even when I was working out a whole lot, I sometimes didn't."

Lea Michele is to guest star in 'Sons of Anarchy'.
The 'Glee' actress has signed up for a cameo role in the final season of the biker drama and couldn't be happier to be making an appearance on her "favourite" programme.
She tweeted: "Woke up so excited today! Fun news to share...
"I'll be appearing on an episode of my favorite show @SonsofAnarchy! Thank you so much @Harparbar & @sutterink #SOAFX (sic)"
FX went on to reveal to MTV News that the brunette beauty will portray Gertie, an "empathetic truck stop waitress and single mother, who connects with Gemma during a difficult time."
Lea's casting comes after it was recently announced rockers Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson will also appear in the seventh season of the show.
Show creator Kurt Sutter recently revealed the 'Rock is Dead' hitmaker - who
will play "a white supremacist prison shot-caller" named Ron Tully - was desperate for a role.
He said: "Manson, I became friends with through some music buddies. He's a huge fan of the show. That was him just wearing me down. We found a great role for him and he's great."
Kurt admitted he loves casting "outside the box" and the decision to hire Courtney to play a teacher in the upcoming series fitted perfectly with the "fun" he looks for in his cast.
He said: "I tend to do this every season, I like to do some casting that's a little bit outside the box, from Stephen King to David Hasselhoff. We try to do stuff that's fun.
"Courtney I don't know as well [as Manson]. I got to meet her a couple times and I was a huge Nirvana fan. We had this role of a school teacher and I thought, 'Who better than Courtney Love?' It sort of fits into our parameters of 'Sons of Anarchy' casting."

Miranda Kerr credits motherhood for teaching her to prioritise.
The Australian model - who has her own skincare line, Kora Organics, and is also a health coach - says since having Flynn, her three-year-old son with former husband Orlando Bloom, she has become more organised and even has the next two years planned out.
She said: "[Motherhood] has really been a great lesson for me on learning how to prioritise my time and planning efficiently so I make sure that I have enough quality time with my son.
"And, obviously being a businesswoman and a mother and working with different companies it's important for me that I balance it all out so that I can give my best, first and foremost to my son, but then also to my clients, and take care of my cosmetic business Kora Organics.
"I'm definitely more organised now that I've ever been and that's good for me because I already have my next two years planned out with certain contracts that I have, but I make sure that I take a few days off to be with my son when I get home. We read or dance together, we go and hang out with a playgroup or draw together. Those special moments are really important. I'm working 'moth-er' not 'harder'."
And the 31-year-old beauty says her little boy brings a great deal of "joy" to her life, as do a lot of other simple pleasures,
She added in an interview with Marie Claire México y América Latina magazine: "I would have to say being a mother and spending time with my son, that really fills my heart with joy.
"Being in nature, like walking on the beach or going for a walk in the mountains, getting a fresh bouquet of flowers, taking a bath after a long day of work, putting the candles on, having a cup of tea with my friends, laughing and dancing around the house. The simple things add a lot of joy to my life."

Taylor Schilling was serenaded by her castmates at her 30th birthday party at the weekend.
The 'Orange is the New Black' actress was joined by several stars of the show, including Laura Prepon, Laverne Cox, Natasha Lyonne and Uzo Aduba, at New York nightspot Catch Roof on Saturday (26.07.14) and the group sang 'Happy Birthday' to her at one point during the evening.
And Taylor was particularly thrilled to see Madeline Brewer - who was killed off on the last series of the Netflix drama - arrive unexpectedly at the bash.
A source told the New York Post newspaper's Page Six column: "Taylor screamed when she saw Madeline walk in. They shared a big hug."
Taylor recently admitted she found it "terrifying" visiting a prison as part of her research into playing Piper Chapman on the show.
She said: "I did visit a prison, going into the second season. It was terrifying, sad, and really moved me.
"I was at the women's camp at Rikers Island in New York and what struck me was that so many of them were so young, in their early twenties, but everyone had children and they were overwrought about what was happening to their kids."
