Robert Downey Jr. says his drug addiction was "perfectly normal".
The 'Iron Man' star - who struggled with substance abuse in the past and was charged with the possession of cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin before being ordered to complete multiple stays in rehab - believes becoming "obsessive" about something is simply a phase of life.
On the topic of battling his past demons, he told Vanity Fair magazine: "For some folks it's just a function of age.
"It's perfectly normal for people to be obsessive about something for a period of time, then leave it alone."
The 49-year-old actor - who also spent time in jail after breaking out of court-ordered rehab - finally recognises the ways in which addicts can successfully tackle their issues, although he admitted he took a slightly different path to getting clean.
He explained: "Job one is get out of that cave. A lot of people do get out but don't change. So the thing is to get out and recognise the significance of that aggressive denial of your fate, come through the crucible forged into a stronger metal. Or whatever. But I don't even know if that was my experience.
"It's funny: five years ago, I would've made it sound like I'm conscious of my own participation in seizing the similarities. But so many things have become less certain. I swear to God. I am not my story."
Robert was also quick to come to the defence of his son, Indio, who was arrested over the possession of cocaine in June.
The Oscar nominee alleges the 20 year old has inherited a "predisposition" to addiction and believes the readily available information about his own struggle with drugs has only served to accelerate his spiral into substance use.
He said: "He's his mother's son and my son, and he's come up the chasm much quicker than we did.
"But that's typical in the Information Age; things get accelerated. You're confronted with histories and predispositions and influences and feelings and unspoken traumas or needs that weren't met, and all of a sudden you're three miles into the woods.
"Can you help someone get out of those woods? Yes, you can. By not getting lost looking for them."
He added: "Pick a dysfunction and it's a family problem."

Katie Price says she has "no problem" with her "hater" Kelly Brook.
The 36-year-old star has responded to comments her former "fellow Page 3 girl" made in her new autobiography 'Kelly Brook - Close Up', which branded her "brash and common", accused her of her making a move on Kelly's then-boyfriend Danny Cipriani and suggested she should never have been a glamour model because of her lack of curves.
Katie - who recently gave birth to her and husband Kieran Hayler's second child - said: "Last week, I was called 'brash and common'. Apparently, being a glamour model was the wrong job for me because I have no hips and curves.
"So says one of my fellow Page 3 girls from back in the day. Yes, Kelly Brook has a book out - and it suggests she's followed my career closely.
"Being posh, common or whatever your background is shouldn't stop you living your dream! I have no problem with Kelly. As Taylor Swift sings, haters gonna hate... But I'm gonna shake it off."
Meanwhile, Katie - who has 12-year-old son Harvey, nine-year-old son Junior and seven-year-old daughter Princess from previous relationships as well as 13-month-old son Jett with Kieran - also confessed she's still not decided on a name for her new daughter, nearly six weeks after giving birth.
Speaking in her column for Now magazine, she said: "I'm loving every minute with my new daughter. But, at the time of going to press, the six-week deadline to register her birth is almost upon us!
"It's so difficult to choose a name as I set my standards with Princess. Bean, as I'm calling her for the moment, needs a name to be up there like that.
"We have some ideas but it could be a case of drawing one out of the hat."

Rumer Willis was left red-faced after she ripped her leather pants during a karaoke session.
The 26-year-old actress was celebrating the birthday of her friend, 'Twenty Good Years' actor Jake Sandvig, last night (08.09.14) when she suffered the unfortunate wardrobe malfunction.
However, Rumer wasn't too embarrassed about the butt-baring rip as she took to her Instagram account to share a snap of the tear.
The accompanying caption read: "When your brand new leather pants rip while you friend is singing karaoke on there bday. Thank you @jake.sandvig for bringing me a bad omen (sic)"
On her own birthday in August Rumer was presented with a gun-shaped cake by her mother Demi Moore to celebrate turning 26.
The '90210' star - whose dad is Hollywood action hero Bruce Willis - posted on Twitter at the time: "Best birthday cake ever. Thank you mama for making this day do (so) special. (sic)"
The cake was believed to be a reference to Rumer's appearance in 'For the Record', the stage musical tribute to movie director Quentin Tarantino, in which performed the Nancy Sinatra song 'Bang, Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)'.

Kim Kardashian West's daughter North owns £7,000 worth of designer handbags.
The 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' star's 14-month-old daughter with rapper Kanye West has already developed an eye for luxury items and has been spotted carrying a jewel-encrusted black leather Louis Vuitton Candy bag worth £882.
It's not the first time the adorable toddler has been spotted with designer goods, however, as last month North starred in a photo shoot for CR Fashion Book alongside a Chanel Mini Flap bag worth £1,650 and Kim and Kanye are said to be keen to expand her collection.
A friend of the couple told heat magazine: "Kanye and Kim plan to buy North an Hermès Birkin bag each year and then present her with the collection on her 18th birthday.
"It was Kanye's idea - and of course Kim loved it. He's thrilled to have a little girl to spoil. Her first Birkin bag is pink."
North's growing bag collection comes after she was showered with a number of lavish gifts - including diamond earrings, a £30,000 doll house and a rare 400-carat pink pearl - for her first birthday earlier this year.

FBI agents raided a hotel room in a bid to find a woman who has allegedly been making death threats against Kris Jenner.
According to RadarOnline, a room at the Four Seasons hotel in Los Angeles was searched for more than three hours by the officers on Friday morning (05.09.14) and several electrical items including a computer, iPad, mobile phone and an iPod were seized.
Representatives for the FBI and US Attorney's Office confirmed to the website that documents including a search and seizure warrant and paperwork referring to Kris as KJ exist.
However, the alleged victim told the website she is not guilty of sending death threats to the Kardashian matriarch and insists she was "flabbergasted" when the FBI burst into her hotel room.
She told Radar: "After the search I was taken into a room and was asked what I thought this was all about. I said I didn't know. They asked me if I use the internet a lot and I said 'yes'.
"They told me it was about Kris Jenner and her [accounts] being hacked, her email being hacked, her iCloud being broken into and getting crank calls. I was flabbergasted.
"They told me they'd been tracking me and had been building a case. They asked who certain people's cars were and about people they'd seen me with.
"I told them it was someone I let use my computer and laptop a lot over the course of eight months."
The woman also revealed the agents pointed their guns at her before handcuffing her when they went into her room.
She added: "On Friday morning I was asleep in my hotel room when I heard a knock on the door. I asked who it was and they said FBI.
"I opened the door and was told to turn around, and was handcuffed, facing 12 agents with guns pointed at me."

She explained: "Then you have those protein shakes and they're nice 'cause they're all chocolate and banana and peanut butter' so I have three of those a day."

Mitch Winehouse finds it "difficult" to listen to his late daughter Amy Winehouse's songs.
The jazz singer has confessed he often gets upset if he plays Amy's albums 'Back to Black' and 'Frank' because he still finds it hard to accept that she is gone.
Speaking at the launch of his new album 'But Beautiful' at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in London on Monday night (08.09.14), he told BANG Showbiz: "I find it difficult to listen to her albums, it's upsetting. I like listening to the stuff that I discovered like 'When My Eyes' and 'Fool's Gold'. I loved the stuff she did will Jools Holland and Paul Weller, those are great. Vocally she was at her finest."
Mitch says Amy's influence can be found on his new LP as many of the tracks were chosen by her for inclusion on his debut album 'Rush of Love' - which he recorded with his daughter before her tragic death in July 2011 at the age of 27 - but didn't make the final tracklisting.
He explained: "When Amy and I did the first album and we chose the songs, a lot of the songs we chose didn't go on that album and are on this new record. We had like 40 songs - actually it was more like 50 songs - picked out. I think the tracks on this album are the better songs."
All proceeds from sales of the album - which is released on September 29 on Lioness - will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation (www.amywinehousefoundation.org).

Taylor Swift has revealed a fellow female singer tried to "sabotage" her entire 'Red' world tour.
The 24-year-old beauty claims the star, who she did not name, committed a "horrible" act by attempting to hire some of her own staff members from under her, and as a result they have now become "enemies".
In interview with Rolling Stone magazine, she said: "She did something so horrible. I was like, 'Oh, we're just straight-up enemies.' And it wasn't even about a guy! It had to do with business.
"She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I'm surprisingly non-confrontational - you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It's awkward, and I don't like it."
Taylor has slammed the mystery woman in a new song, 'Bad Blood', which is to appear on her upcoming fifth studio album '1989', and admitted she was always uncertain as to whether the pair were pals or not when they used to meet at events.
She added: "For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not.
"She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, 'Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?' "
The Twittersphere went into a frenzy following her comments and sparked speculation Taylor could be referring to Katy Perry after the 'California Gurls' hitmaker hit out at an unnamed person on the social networking site, referencing Regina George, the lead character in 'Mean Girls' played by Rachel McAdams.
She wrote: "Watch out for the Regina George in sheep's clothing..."
What's more, further fuel was added to the fire by website Idolator, which claims some of the dancers who worked on Katy's 'Prismatic' tour used to be employed by Taylor.
Taylor admitted she was keen to let fans know that 'Bad Blood' was not about a boy, as many of her songs are about former lovers, but in doing so the star - who famously never talks about her boyfriends in interviews - accidentally said the name of her ex-boyfriend Harry Styles' band, One Direction.
She said: "I know people will make it this big girl-fight thing.
"But I just want people to know it's not about a guy. You don't want to shade someone you used to date and make it seem like you hate him, when that's not the case. And I knew people would immediately be going in one direction."
