Lily Collins admits "heartbreak sucks."
The 25-year-old actress, who previously dated Zac Efron and Jamie Campbell Bower, says she has learned a lot about herself from her failed relationships.
She said: "You can get different things out of different relationships with different people. You can take every experience and try to learn something about yourself - maybe something that was making you happy or unhappy, qualities you did or didn't like about that person - and take that with you, so at least you know the boundaries of what works for you."
But the 'Love, Rosie' star insists she doesn't have type when it comes to dating.
She told online magazine The Edit: "When you're just being yourself, that's when you attract someone with the qualities that are most suitable for you. The second you write someone off because they're 'not your type,' you shut yourself off from a person and an experience that might be perfect for you. Sometimes you just need to say yes."
The brunette beauty looks for friends and boyfriends who "disagree" with her and can sense when people have "ulterior motives."
She said: "It's important to have challengers, not in an offensive way, but someone who reminds you that what you are thinking is not always correct."

Paula Patton is "really excited" about the future.
The 38-year-old actress is ready to move forward after recently filing for divorce from Robin Thicke, who she split from in January, and is currently "reading a lot of scripts," as she wants to focus on her career.
A source close to the 'Baggage Claim' star said: "Paula is doing great. She's really excited about the future."
The 'About Last Night' star was recently linked to musician Zak Waters, 27, but is now "single."
'Blurred Lines' hitmaker Robin, 37, held a "divorce party" shortly after his estranged wife submitted court documents on October 3, but the former couple are still on "good" terms for the sake of their son, Julian, four.
The insider told E! News: "Everything is good between Paula and Robin. It really is amicable and they're getting along."
The duo split amid rumours Robin cheated on the actress, who he started dating in high school, after nine years of marriage, but he previously admitted: "I changed, and I got a little too selfish, a little too greedy and little too full of myself."
He added: "I'm a man. I messed up and I had to lie for a while, and then I stopped lying...That was actually good for me because I was tired of lying."

Iggy Azalea is "really excited" for face her ex-boyfriend in court.
The 24-year-old star claims her former lover Hefe Wine - real name Maurice Williams - threatened to tell the world she gave him a Sexually Transmitted Disease [STD] unless she agreed to settle their common law divorce dispute privately, but she refused.
The 'Fancy' hitmaker was blindsided when Hefe recently filed court documents in Texas, where the law states a man and a woman can be considered legally married if they live together in the state for any period of time and agree to tie the knot, claiming they "agreed to be married" in 2008, but she believes justice will prevail.
In a lengthy rant on Twitter today (17.10.14), the blonde beauty wrote: "I also was told yesterday via his lawyer if i do not settle out of court they will go to the press and say i gave him an STD, whats next?
"Unfortunately to file common law 'divorce' all you need is three of your friends to sign a statement swearing the persons story is true.
"Actually proving it in court is another story im just waiting to get infront of a judge so it can be disproven & obtain a restraining order (sic)"
She added: "Since this whole 'common law divorce' thing has gone public thankfully I've had so many women support me and come fwd with info.
"i have such a great collection of witnesses now and I'm really excited to get my day in court and see justice prevail (sic)."
The Australian star, who is dating Los Angeles Lakers star Nick Young, has hired two armed bodyguards to protect her, as she claims her ex-boyfriend is currently embroiled in a domestic violence court case with another ex-girlfriend.
She said: "Ive avoided texas entirely for the last 5 years. when i do go now i have a police escort & two armed bodyguards, evidently for good reason (sic)."

Meg Ryan has sparked rumours she has reunited with John Mellencamp.
The 'You've Got Mail' actress split from the 63-year-old rocker in July after three years of dating, as they felt they could no longer sustain their long distance relationship, but the former couple were spotted strolling through SoHo in New York City on Wednesday (15.10.14).
An eyewitness told PEOPLE.com that the duo stopped by the Scholastic children's bookstore, and looked "relaxed and comfortable" together.
Their friendly reunion comes just weeks after John called the 52-year-old actress, who lives in Manhattan with her adopted daughter Daisy, nine, an "angel" and admitted they only split up because they were forced to spend long periods apart, as he lives in Bloomington, Indiana.
During an interview last month, he said: "Meg is an angel. She was just an angel sent to me at the right time.
"We tried to have a relationship for three years - long distance. We'll see what happens."
A source previously said they "had distance problems during the entire relationship and tried to make it work, but it wasn't meant to be."
Another source said: "Meg enjoyed going to Bloomington with John to visit, but she isn't going to pull up stakes from Manhattan, it's where she made her life with her daughter.
"His heart is still in his native Indiana. He made a vow as a young man that he would never abandon it again after leaving twice before."

Portia de Rossi's mother is disappointed she doesn't want children.
The 41-year-old actress, who is married to chat show queen Ellen DeGeneres, feels like they're upsetting everyone, including her mother, Margaret Rogers, because they have no desire to start a family.
Asked about rumours they're going to have a child, the 'Scandal' actress said: "Oh, I know. I know. Oh, gosh. It's just one big rumour that doesn't seem to go away, and at this point, I feel like I'm disappointing the whole of America, not just my mother. You know? It's true. The tabloids are at me. My mother's at me. I just..."
The couple, who got married six years ago, love spending time with Portia's nieces, Eva, five, and Perry, three, but are always happy to "leave" afterwards.
The blonde beauty told 'Jimmy Kimmel Live': "They're adorable and we love them and we play with them, and then we leave."
She jokingly added: "It's supervised play, Jimmy."
Portia also says the girls think she is a "cool aunt."
She said: "One of them, the younger one, Perry, she seems to think that I'm great right now, and I'm going to enjoy that for the next couple years."
And their older niece enjoys taking advantage of Ellen's star status.
The 'Arrested Development' star said: "She's five, so she realises that the other aunt -- Ellen -- there's a lot of perks that go along with that. There's free stuff, there's 'meet the pop star that she wants to meet,' 12 days of giveaways, obviously...She's a pretty good aunt to have. They watch her show every day, so they've wised-up now."
