Bob Geldof found it "exhausting and embarrassing" calling stars for Band Aid 30.
The 63-year-old singer has been the guiding force behind the charity single, as he was with the original 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' in 1984, and he's admitted it wasn't easy to get so many big names to record the track.
He reflected: "It's a song, it's a track, but it's an event and the next stage is to turn it into a phenomenon like it was in the '80s. And the only way to do that is to get people to buy the thing.
"Spare me this free economy. Spare me Spotify and YouTube. There's a donate button on YouTube. Hit the donate button. It's a badge of honour to have this on your phone or on your iPod, or whatever the hell you're using. And don't buy one. Buy several. Give them to your mates."
U2 frontman Bono - who has appeared on three of the four versions of 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' - is among the stars set to appear on the eagerly-awaited track and he said: "I just wish we didn't have to do this. There will come a time when we won't. And it will be great not to see the same old faces.
"What's great about today is it's like Star Trek: The Next Generation."
One Direction, Ellie Goulding and Coldplay's Chris Martin are all set to feature on the track, which will raise money for the Ebola crisis in Africa.

Britain's Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are to attend an NBA game in New York next month.
The royal couple - who are currently expecting their second child - will watch Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James, one of the league's most iconic players, take on the Brooklyn Nets during their first visit to New York City in December.
They will appear at the Barclays Center "to help launch a new collaboration between the Royal Foundation, United for Wildlife and the NBA".
However, Prince William and his wife - who was known as Kate Middleton prior to their marriage - will not be travelling with their 16-month-old son Prince George, who is being left at home with nannies.
The visit will also see the couple attend a number of other formal engagements, including a reception "celebrating the wealth of British talent in the creative industries based in New York".
The announcement comes shortly after One Direction congratulated the Duchess of Cambridge on her second pregnancy.
Singer Harry Styles, 20, admitted he was surprised Duchess Catherine was so slim at 16 weeks pregnant.
The singer told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "I said congratulations on the bump. (Though) she didn't look bumpy."

Amanda Bynes wants to kill her parents.
The 28-year-old actress has been recorded on tape by one of her roommates saying she dreams of murdering her dad, slitting her mother's wrist and then burning down their house.
Amanda - who has had no fixed abode since leaving a psychiatric hospital last month - can be heard saying: "I don't want to shoot my father in the face, and that's why I said I want to like strip for him as a joke.
"I want to literally like lead him into a ditch and ... I have't decided how I'd want to murder him, because now I have like this war wound on my face, and I don't believe in murder. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than like, slitting his throat.
"So like I'm not gonna like ever do such a thing, but like I call my mom and like I threaten to like to kill her and I threaten to slit her wrist, and I threaten to like burn down her house.
"I'm gonna continue telling you guys I'm gonna murder my family, like 'cause that's the thing that like they're in control of my money and that's why I don't have much money right now."
Rick and Lynn Bynes have a conservatorship over the actress, but are reportedly keen to step down so they can rebuild their relationship.
Meanwhile, TMZ claims Amanda's family members wanted the tapes released because they might act as "wake-up call for medical professionals to intervene and get her help".

Taylor Swift gave up on men because she wanted people to focus more on her music.
The 'Shake It Off' hitmaker said after her relationship with One Direction's Harry Styles ended in early 2013, she made a conscious decision to ensure that the public would focus less of their attention on her love life and more on her musical talents.
The 24-year-old beauty - whose latest album '1989' is out now - explained: "It broke my heart! I was selling out stadiums and it was all people talked about."
Taylor's new album sold more than one million copies in the first week, and she's delighted the world is interested in her vocal talents, rather than her relationships.
The star - who's dated the likes of Taylor Lautner and John Mayer - told Us Weekly: "Now people talk less about the things that don't matter."
Taylor also admitted that one of the songs on '1989', 'How You Get the Girl', is written as an instruction manual for men everywhere.
She reflected: "It's written for a guy who has broken up with his girlfriend, then wants her back after six months But it's not going to be as simple as sending a text like, 'Sup? Miss you.'
"That won't work. You need to do all the things I say."

Adele isn't among the line-up for Band Aid 30.
The London-born songstress was widely expected to be one of the leading names among the array of stars to record the Christmas single, but when the much-anticipated line-up was confirmed earlier today (15.11.14), the 'Someone Like You' hitmaker's name did not appear.
However, the single - a play on the original 'Do They Know It's Christmas' - will feature an impressive list of big-name acts, including One Direction, U2's Bono, Ellie Goulding and Coldplay's Chris Martin, all of whom are seeking to raise money for the Ebola crisis in Africa.
Ed Sheeran and Rita Ora have also been named among the acts who are to appear on the single, but there is no space for Adele.
What's more, the lyrics of the new track have also been released, which reveal a few minor tweaks have been made to the ever-popular original.
A new line reads: "Where a kiss of love can kill you - And there's death at every tear."
Another reads: "Well tonight we're reaching out, and touching you."
The lyrics continue: "No peace and joy this Christmas in West Africa - the only hope they'll have is being alive.
"Where to comfort is to fear - Where to touch is to be scared.
"How can they know it's Christmas time at all."

Johnny Depp appeared to be drunk on stage at the 18th Annual Hollywood Film Festival on Friday night (15.11.14).
The 51-year-old Hollywood icon appeared at the event to present the documentary award for 'Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon', directed by Mike Myers.
However, it soon became apparent Johnny wasn't in the best shape for the role, expressing bemusement about the double microphone in front of him, saying: "That's the weirdest microphone I ever saw in my life."
Johnny subsequently tried to adjust the microphone, which drew laughter from the crowd, including music manager Shep Gordon, who was seen giggling.
The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' actor admitted: "I'm not very good at this type of thing.
"Watch, I'm going to read this thing."
Trying to regain his composure, Johnny added: "For decades Shep Gordon has been one of the most beloved and respected talent managers in the music industry, he is also the current star and subject of the documentary 'Supermensch' ... cos he is a mensch [Yiddish for a person of integrity].
"I've been very, very lucky to have him in my life. He is someone I consider a great friend, an incredibly loyal friend.
"So you have to watch the film!"

Jennifer Aniston says she has "more balls" than her 'Horrible Bosses 2' co-stars.
The 45-year-old actress, who is engaged to 'The Leftovers' star Justin Theroux, says she wasn't intimidated about working alongside Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis and Jason Bateman on the film.
She said: "I have more balls than all of these guys combined. I worked hard on delivering those [raunchy] lines."
As well as working hard, Jennifer also found some time to have fun on the movie set and the group used to try to get Bateman to laugh because he used to be good at keeping a straight face.
She said: "Bateman is a real pro. To make him break is kind of a big deal."
Asked who she thinks would be the best boss in real life, she said: "I think Bateman would be a great, great boss. He's straight and narrow, on point and honest. But he might be strict. He might get mad."
But the 45-year-old actor doesn't think he would like working for the blonde beauty.
He added to PEOPLE magazine: "I think I would be early, and we'd stay long. You'd get good travel opportunities."
Christoph Waltz has joined the cast for the sequel and admits it was like working with his children.
He said: "I have experience with the circus, and I have four children. So three more guys I could add."

Cheryl Fernandez-Versini will choose between becoming a mother and returning as a judge on 'The X Factor' next year.
The 'I Don't Care' hitmaker - who rejoined this year's panel alongside Louis Walsh, Mel B and Simon Cowell three years after she was fired from 'The X Factor USA' - admitted she needs time to "reflect" and isn't sure whether she will return to the competition next year or quit the series to start a family with her husband, Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini.
She said: "You couldn't do them both. Next year is going to have to be the time where I reflect on what I've done and think about what I want to do. I'm not ruling it out.
"To think about going back next year at this point is too much. I put my heart and soul into it -- I'm not a half-hearted person.
"You feel like you're on the biggest rollercoaster. I can't even think about it right now. I need to find my balance, sit down, have a drink and rethink things."
The 31-year-old brunette beauty also opened up about her return to the show - on which she starred from 2008 to 2010 before leaving for the US version of the show - confessing she felt there was "unfinished business" for her on the series and was keen to create more talent.
She explained: "I felt like I needed to put a lid on it - there was unfinished business. A lot of the focus goes to the judges but a lot of the time I find that ridiculous. I genuinely want to create talent."
Cheryl also insisted that the tension on the panel between her and show boss Simon Cowell isn't put on for the cameras and claims the 55-year-old music mogul often makes "snide remarks" at her behind the scenes.
She told The Sun newspaper: "Simon is Simon. He hasn't changed one bit. He's giving us a hard time. What people don't realise is what goes on backstage. There's a lot of snide remarks and competing."
