Drugs played a huge part in David Bowie's early success, according to his former guitarist.
Carlos Alomar, who played guitar on 12 of Bowie's albums, claims that cocaine helped the rock star to be especially productive during the early stages of his legendary career.
He explained: "In order for him to stay up all night and finish the tasks at hand, it was a huge factor.
"Its function was to keep you alert, and that's what he was doing. It did not stop his creativity at all."
The guitarist, who is now the director of the Stevens Institute of Technology's Sound Synthesis Research Center, explained that Bowie's incredible popularity at the peak of his career in the 1970s and 1980s made it impossible for him to escape the party scene.
He told the New York Post newspaper: "He didn't have to buy anything, because everything was right there.
"We would be on the 18th floor of a hotel, and some fans would just rent the whole 17th floor, and they were all, 'Please hang out.' If you happened to have some money and could get a mountain of cocaine, you'd be like, 'Look, I got cocaine. Come to my place.'"

Tom Felton pulled a successful prank on Rupert Grint in New York.
The 27-year-old English actor - who played Draco Malfo in the 'Harry Potter' films - posed as an enthusiastic fan as he waited for Rupert, 26, to emerge after starring in Broadway hit 'It's Only a Play', which also features Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane.
A spy at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre explained: "Of all the big stars in the show, Rupert has the biggest fanatics.
"There are fans who wait for him after the show a couple of times a week to take selfies with him. Some of them haven't seen the show - they just want to see Rupert."
Tom showed up after a performance, posing as a fan named Bob and dressed in a disguise that fooled his good friend.
The source told the New York Post's Page Six column: "Tom was in a disguise to pull a prank on Rupert.
"The pair have a long history of playing pranks on each other on the set and off. Eventually Tom revealed himself to Rupert. It was hilarious."
Rupert previously provoked his friend by turning up on the red carpet of his 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' premiere in LA, wearing a T-shirt that declared his love for Tom.

Amanda Bynes had a huge bust-up with Paris Hilton at an LA nightclub on Thursday night (13.11.14).
The 28-year-old actress entered 10ak with a male friend and tried to sit at the table of Paris, 33, who was with her pal Brandon Davis.
A witness shared: "Amanda tried to sit at Paris and Brandon's table, and they were not happy about it.
"There was a scene, and words exchanged, before they kicked her out of their area."
Following the incident, Amanda was seen acting strangely for the rest of the night.
The source told the New York Post's Page Six Column: "Amanda wasn't drinking, but she was acting really weird. She stood in the middle of the club with her friend, looking really awkward, and just seemed totally out of it."
Amanda - who was released from a psychiatric facility on October 30 - has reportedly been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was recently recorded on tape threatening to kill her own parents, Rick and Lynn Bynes.
She said: "I don't want to shoot my father in the face, and that's why I said I want to like strip for him as a joke.
"I want to literally like lead him into a ditch and ... I have't decided how I'd want to murder him, because now I have like this war wound on my face, and I don't believe in murder. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than like, slitting his throat."
TMZ said Amanda's family members wanted the tapes released because they might act as "wake-up call for medical professionals to intervene and get her help".

Harry Styles has once again implied he would be happy dating men.
The One Direction singer recently suggested he may be bisexual and has added weight to those claims by telling fellow members of the group not to dismiss the idea until they've tried it themselves.
Harry, 20, gave an interview to The Sun on Sunday in which he and Niall Horan, 21, were asked about dating men, to which Harry responded: "Hey, don't knock it 'til you try it."
Last week, the band - which also includes Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik - were all asked about the traits they look for in a potential partner.
Liam was quick to say: "Female, it's a good trait."
However, Harry quickly replied by saying it's not "that important".
Meanwhile, Harry's former girlfriend Taylor Swift has revealed she gave up on men because she wanted people to focus more on her music.
The pair were dating until early 2013, and Taylor, 24, admits she didn't like being in the headlines for her love life.
The 'Shake It Off' hitmaker told Us Weekly: "It broke my heart! I was selling out stadiums and it was all people talked about."

Taylor Swift "struggles" to find female role models.
The 'Shake It Off' hitmaker has confessed she doesn't look up to any older female singers and finds it hard to identify with them as many have been "completely picked apart".
She told ET Online: "We're taught to find examples for the way we want our lives to wind up. But I can't find anyone, really, who's had the same career trajectory as mine.
"I just struggle to find a woman in music who hasn't been completely picked apart by the media, or scrutinised and criticised for ageing, or criticised for fighting ageing - it just seems to be much more difficult to be a woman in music and to grow older."
However, Taylor, 24 - whose latest album '1989' recently sold 1.28 million copies in its first week - admitted she is inspired by 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' star Mariska Hargitay and admires that the 50-year-old actress has built a "beautiful life and an incredible career" for herself.
She said: "I do have female role models in the sense of actresses like Mariska Hargitay. I think she has a beautiful life, and an incredible career, and I think she's built that for herself."

Emma Stone is "obsessed" with her role on Broadway.
The 26-year-old actress recently took over from Michelle Williams as Sally Bowles in 'Cabaret' and admits she has wanted to play the part since she was a child.
She said: "I've wanted to play Sally Bowles since I was 10, and saw Natasha Richardson in 'Cabaret'.
"I don't think I've ever been so truly obsessed with a character or a story. I can't believe it's actually happening.
"Rob Marshall [co-director with Sam Mendes] said to me that Sally is like 'Hamlet' for women."
Emma's co-star Alan Cumming also thinks Emma's role is very special because her alter-ego is so "vulnerable" but also "funny".
He told Vanity Fair magazine: "It's unusual for young actresses to get such completeness in a role. Sally is vulnerable, tragic, funny, unlikable, heartbreaking. And then she gets whacked across the face with an epiphany."
Emma previously admitted she was terrified of taking on the role.
The 'Birdman' star said: "I'm scared s***less! But I've wanted to play that part since I was, strangely, nine years old, which is way too young."

Adele ignored Sir Bob Geldof's Band Aid phone calls.
The 'Skyfall' hitmaker is said to have been approached by the charity record's organisers and Bob, 63, countless times but refused to respond to their efforts to get her to participate.
He told The Sun newspaper: "Adele is doing nothing. She's not answering the phone.
"She's not writing. She's not recording. She doesn't want to be bothered by anyone."
In spite of the efforts of the Boomtown Rats star and songwriter Midge Ure, Adele, 26, "didn't even bother" to explain her decision to turn down their offer.
A Band Aid source said: "We made 100 phone calls to Adele because Bob and Midge were desperate for her to take part.
"But it was complete radio silence back. She didn't even bother to say she couldn't do it."
The 'I Don't Like Mondays' hitmaker believes the Grammy Award-winner - who has two-year-old son Angelo with her partner Simon Konecki - is too busy being a mum.
He said: "She won't even pick up the phone to her manager. She's bringing up a family, you know.
"Some people just don't want to do it.
"Of course they agree with it, but it's not their way of doing something."
After seeing the turn out for this year's single - a play on the original 'Do They Know It's Christmas' to raise money for the Ebola crisis in Africa - which features One Direction, U2's Bono, Ellie Goulding and Coldplay's Chris Martin, Bob isn't sure they could have fitted any more artists in the studio.
He said: "Some people just don't think that they could make any impact at all by coming along.
"What can we do that will possibly make it any better?
"And frankly, if we had any more people in this room we wouldn't get it done.
"It's f***ing rammed. You can't move, you know."
