Angelina Jolie believes people are "not alone in the world".
The 39-year-old actress-and-director began to embrace her spiritual side after getting to know Louis Zamperini - the American prisoner of war survivor and Olympian who is the subject of her film 'Unbroken' - and becoming inspired by his journey through life.
When asked on what she had learned from Zamperini, she said: "When there is an obstacle, you have to rise to the challenge, not be overwhelmed by it. And we're not alone in the world."
The 'Maleficent' star - who raises six children, Maddox, 13, Pax, 11, Zahara, nine, Shiloh, eight, and six-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, with her husband Brad Pitt - admits that while she's certain there's something "greater" than human life, she's unsure what to actually call it.
She added to PEOPLE: "I don't know if there's a name for that - religion or faith - just that there's something greater than all of us, and it's uniting and beautiful."
Jolie became close friends with Zamperini - who is portrayed by British actor Jack O'Connell in the movie - while directing the film and was heartbroken when he passed away aged 97 earlier this year.
She said at the time: "It is a loss impossible to describe. We are all so grateful for how enriched our lives are for having known him. We will miss him terribly."

Ben Affleck doesn't understand why American society treats "criminals like celebrities".
The 42-year-old actor is fascinated by the obsession with "notoriety" in the US and has questioned what the motivation is to make murderers infamous.
Speaking in the new issue of Loaded magazine, he said: "Well, I've never been accused of murder - which is about the only thing! Notoriety is the American version of fame. You have people going out and committing crimes just they can be famous and hoping that happens because we treat criminals like celebrities. We focus on them so much. In America everyone can reel off ... famous killers and the way we obsess over them is interesting. It goes back to John Dillinger and Al Capone."
From his own experiences working in Hollywood, Affleck can identify with criminals becoming famous because of the shock value of their actions, but he still thinks it's morally wrong to sensationalise crime, therefore giving heinous individuals the notoriety they crave.
The 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' star added: "I don't know why we want to make people like Jesse James a hero - people who murdered other people - but it is what we focus on. I don't know. We watch these things on TV and I can identify with the tabloid media fame part of it but I think it's a whole other thing when you get into this cable killer 24 hour cycle."
Affleck - who is married to Jennifer Garner - is the cover star of the new issue of Loaded magazine, which is available to buy in print and digital formats now.

Jessie J can't go on tour without her special pillow case.
The 'Burnin' Up' hitmaker has several items she has to have with her on the road so she doesn't get homesick and feels happy travelling, and the pillow case is top of the list.
She revealed to BANG Showbiz: "I usually have around 10 personal suitcases for any trips to the US or further when I'm going to be away for several weeks.
"I have to take my own pillow case and I take candles that I have in my house, so that my hotel room smells like my house. I take anything which keeps me sane, like pictures of my family. But the pillow case is really important; I don't want to put my face on someone else's pillow - gross!"
Jessie - who is heading on tour next year in support of her album 'Sweet Talker' - is aware that the public sometimes think pop stars are diva-ish when it comes to their demands but she says her brother-in-law sympathises with her requirements after seeing firsthand how hard she works.
She explained: "My brother-in-law was talking to me the other day and he said, 'So when you go to hotels you ask for stuff?' And I was like yeah there are a few things you ask for. And he was like, 'I remember reading about people when I was younger who demanded specific things and I thought they were divas. But now I'm related to you and I see what you go through, I understand that when you're travelling this much a hotel room pretty much becomes your house, there are things that make you feel comfortable and with the amount you work, you deserve that. You deserve those things.'
The things you ask for are so small but they make the biggest difference, like a humidifier to make the room's energy a singer's energy. So it's important to make yourself feel settled to be able to work because it's bloody tiring being on the road. It's bloody hard."

Wretch 32 no longer makes New Year's resolutions.
The 'Don't Go' rapper made a vow a few years ago not to make any changes to his life every time January hit because he always broke his promises but ironically that resolution is the only one he has stuck to.
Discussing resolutions, he told BANG Showbiz: "Just being the idiot that I am, a few years ago, I made the resolution to not make a resolution again, and I kind of stuck to it. It's the only one I've stuck to, so yeah, I've been sticking to that for a little while."
Wretch - real name Jermaine Sinclair - is looking forward to a busy 2015 musically and has revealed he tried to emulate the anthems written by the likes of Take That's Gary Barlow and Coldplay's Chris Martin on his latest album 'Growing Over Life'.
He said: "The inspiration behind the record has been listening to Coldplay records, listening to Gary Barlow records like 'Greatest Day', stuff like that, and just trying to put my spin on it.
"I wanted to put out my version of those big songs, one of those feel good records.
"You know like when you listen to 'Greatest Day' by Take That, when that chorus comes in, it just feels like you want to open your arms and sing, so it's just about making songs that connect with people on the biggest scale."

Nicki Minaj has admitted her abortion is the "hardest thing" she's gone through.
The 32-year-old rapper has opened up about her decision to have a termination when she was just a teenager in high school and admits it is a decision that has "haunted" her "all (her) life".
In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, she said: "I thought I was going to die. I was a teenager. It was the hardest thing I'd ever gone through."
Nicki moved from Trinidad and Tobago to New York as a child and went on to study at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts. It was while she was studying at the school that she fell pregnant and the father was older boy from Queens she was dating.
The 'Anaconda' hitmaker knew at the time she couldn't go ahead with the pregnancy because she wasn't in a position to care for a baby properly.
She added: "It'd be contradictory if I said I wasn't pro-choice. I wasn't ready. I didn't have anything to offer a child."
Nicki, 32, has used her music to express her feelings about the abortion, touching on what happened on the track 'Autobiography', from her 2008 mixtape 'Sucka Free', and on her single 'All Things Go' - which features on her latest album 'The Pinkprint'.
In 'All Things Go' she raps about her wishes for her younger brother Micaiah 'Caiah' Maraj and wonders what her child would have been like.
In the lyrics, Nicki - whose real name is Onika Tanya Maraj - rhymes: "I want Caiah to go to college, just to say we did it. My child with Aaron would have been 16 any minute / so in some ways I feel like Caiah is the both of them / It's like he's Caiah's little angel, looking over him."

Pixie Lott thinks it's important to look your best on New Year's Eve.
The 23-year-old singer always goes "all out" to dress up when she celebrates the turning of the year and even if the past 12 months have been bad, she thinks it is a good way to kick off a new start.
She said: "You have to look your best for New Year. If you've had a terrible year, think of it as a new start and go all-out with glitter and glamour. And don't forget your heels."
The blonde beauty - who is in a relationship with model Oliver Cheshire - also advises taking good care with make-up to complete a glamorous outfit.
She said: "I'm a big fan of a statement eye, but make sure you blend your colour.
"Apply your shadow to the lid and then shade it out using a good brush."
2015 will start with a bang for Pixie as she is releasing her new album in January.
She said "The album in January is just going to be my fourth album. We've already got the sessions booked in. We're going to go to New York, LA.
"My last album, I wanted it to be really organic, I worked with like a small group of people, but this album, I think after just dancing and stuff, I want to do more of a fun, up-tempo vibe, do some collaborations, do something fresh and be up for working with loads of different producers."

Jennifer Garner has slammed the hacking of female celebrities' photographs as "violent abuse".
The 'Men, Women & Children' actress admitted that seeing stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and Anna Kendrick have their intimate pictures stolen from their iCloud accounts and posted online earlier this year made her so angry, she wanted to "hurt somebody".
She said: "It's an invasion. It's violent. It's a violent abuse of women. They're not just doing it to any woman. These women know when they're walking down the streets that so many people have seen them in this way. It just makes me want to hurt somebody."
The 42-year-old actress undertook parenting classes before having kids Violet, nine, Seraphina, five, and Samuel, two, with husband Ben Affleck but admits she doesn't always get things right.
She told the new issue of Loaded magazine: "Sometimes as a parent it's when you're trying the hardest. It's when you're trying to do the most on their behalf that you're f***ing up the most."
And Jennifer admitted she related to her 'Men, Women & Children' character, overprotective mother Patricia who wants to keep her daughter away from the perils of the internet, very much.
She said: "I totally connected to the role. She made perfect sense to me. I don't judge her at all.
"Patricia makes a lot of sense. It is scary out there. What I understand about her on a cellular level is that we would all do anything to keep our kids safe."

Gwyneth Paltrow is "proud" of how she and Chris Martin have handled their separation.
The 'Iron Man 3' star split from the Coldplay frontman in March after nine years of marriage and though she admits it may have been "better" to stay together for the sake of their children, Apple, 10, and eight-year-old Moses, she is happy with how close they have grown since deciding to end their union.
She said: "We've made a lot of mistakes, and we've had good days and bad days, but I have to say, I'm proud of us for working through so much stuff together - and not blaming and shaming.
"Of course, there are times when I think it would have been better if we had stayed married, which is always what your children want. But we have been able to solidify this friendship, so that we're really close."
The 42-year-old beauty also admitted it would have been "easier" not to have tried to retain a friendship with the 'Fix You' singer but they did what was best for their kids.
She added to the new issue of Britain's Harper's Bazaar magazine: "It's painful, it's difficult, it might be easier to say, 'I never want to see you again', but what good does that do anyone?"
Gwyneth met Chris, 37, just three weeks after her beloved father Bruce Paltrow passed away in 2002 and she thinks she would have "died" from grief if it hadn't been for the 'Viva La Vida' star.
She said: "It was very fast. I feel like I would have died somehow if I hadn't met him at that time. I felt like I was going to die of grief. I remember waking up, on one particular night, where I felt like I was having a heart attack and I couldn't breathe... I lay on the floor of my apartment in London and I thought, 'I'm not going to survive this.'
"And he just picked me up and he was so loving and patient through all my grieving. He's really great in a crisis. He has incredible empathy when it comes to somebody's pain."
