Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt got married several months before their wedding in France last August.
The 'Unbroken' director has revealed she and the 51-year-old actor legally became husband and wife in a secret civil ceremony in California long before they exchanged vows last summer at their Chateau Miraval estate.
The 39-year-old beauty said: "Before the wedding in France with the kids, Brad and I were already married in California. As Americans, we couldn't marry legally in France."
The couple hired the same judge to conduct both ceremonies, but the first was more spontaneous.
Angelina told Italy's Io Donna magazine: "One day I said to Brad, 'Let's meet up at 4:30 pm?' I called a justice of the peace and we signed the documents."
A source told Us Weekly magazine last March that actress admitted she and Brad were already married when asked about their wedding plans.
The insider said at the time: "Every time I ask, she says she is already married."
But the duo decided to hold a formal celebration for the sake of their six children, Maddox, 13, Pax, 11, Zahara, 10, Shiloh, eight, and six-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox, who were all involved in the second ceremony.

Robert Pattinson and FKA twigs have "become inseparable"
The 28-year-old actor and the British singer, 26, who started dating approximately five months ago after being introduced by mutual friends Sienna Miller and Tom Sturridge, "clicked instantly" and the 'Twilight Saga' star now loves following the 'Two Weeks' hitmaker around on tour.
A source said: "They clicked instantly and they literally have become inseparable."
But the duo don't want to rush their relationship and have no plans to get engaged.
The source said: "Rob wouldn't do it that fast."
The couple reportedly first bonded over their love of music.
The insider told E! News: "There is a special connection between the two of them. Music is a big part of the relationship, because it means to much to them. Rob loves her music."
Meanwhile, he 'Rover' star decided to shave his head recently because twigs "inspired him to do it."
The source added: "He buzzed it, but she was there with him."
The pair spent the festive season with the British heartthrob's family in England and another insider recently revealed his two elder sisters, Lizzy and Victoria, "adore" his new girlfriend and "totally approve" of their relationship.

The insider told E! News: "Chrissy and John were adorable as usual. The music was going and everyone was dancing and the crowd had a great time."

Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden's wedding was "very down to earth".
The couple, who got married last Monday (05.01.15) after just seven months of dating, wanted their nuptials to feel romantic and intimate despite tying the knot in a star-studded ceremony at the 'Sex Tape' star's lavish mansion in Beverly Hills, California.
A source said: "It all felt very down to earth and sweet. It was a big wedding but still managed to feel personal. Everyone was excited to be part of it."
The "totally in love" duo, who were introduced by Benji's sister-in-law Nicole Richie last year, hosted a small rehearsal dinner at the property the night before exchanging vows, as well as a dinner party at Il Cielo restaurant on Saturday night (03.01.15), where they "had a romantic table with rose petals and candles".
Sources close to the couple believe Cameron haws "found true happiness" and insist they were meant to be together.
One friend said: "When you see them together you can see how happy they are. Cameron has found true happiness."
Another pal added to PEOPLE magazine: "Benji adores Cameron. And she can be herself with him.
"For a girl who was happy being single, Cameron has fallen in love."

Nicole Kidman often has snakes at her parties.
The 'Paddington' actress is a big fan of touching the slippery serpents so much so she enjoys hosting events and inviting plenty of the legless creatures along, but she decided against having snakes at her Halloween party last year for fear her kids Sunday, six, and four-year-old Faith, would be too scared.
Nicole - who is married to Keith Urban - said: "I had a party once where I was gonna invite ... well I've had snakes at parties before, but I had a Halloween party this year and we had to cancel the snake charmer because the kids would be too scared.
"I've also had a party where I've had lots of different wild animals and yeah, I love animals!"
The 47-year-old actress, who was born in the US but grew up in Australia, believes she is such a fan of wild animals because of her childhood Down Under, where she used to have a pet funnel-web spider - which can cause death in humans - living in her family swimming pool during her younger years.
Speaking on talk show 'Conan', she added: "We grew up with things like spiders in the pool.
"We have a spider called a funnel-web, which can exist in a bubble.
"It can exist in a bubble, in the pool. And you have to look in the pool before you swim to make sure that ... I mean this isn't frequent, but I know to check the pool."

Hulk Hogan believes he has never been interviewed by David Letterman because he once threatened to beat him up.
The WWE legend has appeared on numerous chat shows during his extensive career, but revealed he hasn't featured on the 'Late Show with David Letterman' because the host once flirted with his ex-wife Linda Hogan in the 1980s, causing a furious reaction from the grappling star.
Hulk explained: "The funniest deal, I never did Letterman. I was a total ass. Linda came in and said, 'Oh my god you won't believe what happened'. And she was like eight months pregnant, she said, 'I was in Giovanni's and David Letterman hit on me!' So of course, I was like total redneck, barbaric, back in the day attitude, I was like, 'That son of a bitch!' "
Following the alleged incident involving Linda - who Hulk divorced in 2009 - the multi-time world champion told NBC television executive Dick Ebersol he planned on assaulting Letterman, and although he never actually hurt him, he believes the threat is the reason why he has never been invited on to the talk show.
Speaking to fellow WWE superstar Chris Jericho for his 'Talk is Jericho' podcast, Hulk, 61, added: "So I told Ebersol - who we were working with - that I was going to come down and kick Letterman's ass. And I wonder, 30 years later, why I was never invited on the show!"

Selena Gomez is learning about life through her mistakes.
The 22-year-old singer-and-actress experienced many ups and downs in 2014, splitting and getting back together with Justin Bieber on several occasions before seemingly separating for good late last year.
Selena also voluntarily checked into the Dawn at the Meadows rehab centre in Arizona for personal reasons not for substance abuse issues, but insists everything she has gone through has helped shape her as a human being and made her realise it's OK to be imperfect.
Asked if she has learned to cope with the pressure of being a celebrity now, the 'Rudderless' star said: "I'm still young and going through the confusion women my age are feeling. Sometimes your mistakes are going to teach you more about life. I have to tell myself I can't be perfect and that I should enjoy all the good things that are happening.
"I've learned a lot about myself (over the past year) and how I want to move forward with my life. I also took some time off to focus on the things that make me happy and the friends I need to help me stay grounded."
While she loves being a pop star, Selena wants to focus on her acting career this year even though she hates auditioning for roles.
She told America's OK! magazine: "It's tough to convince people that I'm right for certain films. I get so uncomfortable on auditions, and it's humbling in a wonderful way and making me a better actress. Whatever comes next, I can't wait."

Brad Pitt is teaching his children how to grow their own vegetables.
The 'Fury' star, who has six children, Maddox, 13, Pax, 11, Zahara, nine, Shiloh, eight, and six-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, with wife Angelina Jolie, got their whole family involved in building an organic vegetable patch and irrigation system at their home in Los Angeles, as he wants them to be aware of where their food comes from.
A source told US OK! magazine: "He spent hours outside with the kids, showing them how to do things.
"It's incredible how he managed to juggle his crazy work schedule with being a father. He's constantly coming up with new games and projects for them.
"Brad had a very simple childhood in Missouri, so he's determined to raise strong, emotionally sound kids who aren't caught up in the crazy, vain world he and Angie live in."
The 51-year-old actor admitted last year that he loves being a farmer since buying a French winery, Miraval, in 2012
He said at the time: "I'm a farmer now. I love learning about the land and which field is most suitable for which grape, the drama of September and October ... I enjoy cleaning the forest and walking the land. [It is] the antithesis of the drive, the want, the need to get ahead indicative of life in Hollywood."
