Russell T. Davies to pen new BBC drama Years and Years

Russell T. Davies is penning a new drama called ‘Years and Years’.
The 55-year-old screenwriter – who successfully revived ‘Doctor Who’ in 2005 – has joined forces with ‘Happy Valley’ producer Red Production Company to help create the new show for the BBC.
‘Years and Years’ will tell the story of a single family over a 15-year period, when the society they live in is shaken up by political changes, technological advancements and economic woes in Britain.
The producers said: "When their lives all converge on one crucial night in 2019, the story accelerates into the future, following the lives and loves of the Lyons over the next 15 years."
The programme is set in a time when Britain has already left the European Union and America has become an isolated power, with China emerging as an increasingly influential figure in global politics.
The six-part drama also follows the rise of Vivienne Rook, who is a new type of politician and entertainer.
Russell’s most recent TV project was the BBC mini-series ‘A Very English Scandal’, which starred Hugh Grant.
And the screenwriter recently admitted he wanted Hugh to play the part of the Time Lord during his days on ‘Doctor Who’, but his offer didn’t even reach the British star.
Speaking to BANG Showbiz, Russell said: "I did want him, but when it comes to stars like that you never get past the agents, you need a special notebook to get through to someone like Hugh!
"I’ve always tried to get people like him for ‘Doctor Who’ and other shows but you never get past the man at the desk!"
