Prince William receives confidential Cabinet papers

Britain's Prince William receives confidential Cabinet documents.
A row erupted earlier this week - following a Freedom of Information Act request made by the campaign group Republic - after it emerged Prince Charles has had access to top-secret government documents for the last 20 years.
And it's now been confirmed that his eldest son, Prince William, also has access to the documents.
A Cabinet Office spokesman defended the situation, saying that, as a future heir to the throne, it was "appropriate that he is regularly briefed on government business".
By contrast, Republic said there was "no good reason" why Prince William also received the Cabinet papers.
This comes shortly after Republic's chief executive Graham Smith said Prince Charles had "no legitimate need" to see the documents.
He explained: "The disclosure of Cabinet papers to Prince Charles is quite extraordinary and completely unacceptable, not only because they would contain highly classified information but because it gives him considerable advantage in pressing his own agenda when lobbying ministers."
Smith added: "Charles is essentially a minister not attending cabinet."
Meanwhile, Labour MP Paul Flynn said the decision to allow Charles access to the Cabinet papers made him the country's "best-informed lobbyist".

Republic lambasts decision to let Prince Charles see Cabinet documents

A campaign group has criticised the decision to allow Britain's Prince Charles access to Cabinet documents.
Republic, which got the information after a three-year Freedom of Information battle, called the prince's access "wrong" and questioned whether there was any real benefit to the move, as has been subsequently suggested by the Cabinet.
In a letter addressed to British Prime Minister David Cameron, the group said: "It is plainly wrong that Charles can lobby on new policy proposals even before the public are aware of the existence of such proposals."
Prince Charles had "no legitimate need" to see the papers, according to Republic's chief executive Graham Smith.
He said: "The disclosure of Cabinet papers to Prince Charles is quite extraordinary and completely unacceptable, not only because they would contain highly classified information but because it gives him considerable advantage in pressing his own agenda when lobbying ministers."
Smith added: "Charles is essentially a minister not attending cabinet."
The move has also been criticised by Labour MP Paul Flynn, who has called for a parliamentary inquiry.
He said the decision to allow Charles access to the Cabinet papers made him the country's "best-informed lobbyist".

Cabinet office defends Prince Charles decision

The Cabinet office has defended the decision to give Britain's Prince Charles access to secret government documents.
The 66-year-old royal has been allowed to see Cabinet documents over the last few decades - but a spokesperson for the Cabinet has rubbished criticism of the move, saying it's important the future king can is kept informed on important matters.
He said: "It has been established practice for many years that the sovereign and the heir to the throne receive the minutes of cabinet meetings.
"It is important that the head of state and her heir are properly briefed."
The news came to light following a successful Freedom of Information request and poses more questions about the prince's involvement in British politics.
Earlier this year, after another Freedom of Information Act battle, the so-called "black spider letters" sent by Prince Charles to ministers were released into the public domain.
The controversial letters covered a broad range of topics, including defence spending, badger culls and the NHS, and led critics to claim the prince had no right to interfere in British politics because he is the heir to the throne.

Duchess of Cornwall invites special guests to decorate Christmas tree

Britain's Duchess of Cornwall has received help in decorating Clarence House's Christmas tree from a specially-invited group of young people.
The 68-year-old royal - who invites guests to decorate the tree every year - has, on this occasion, invited young people who are supported by Helen & Douglas House Hospice and The London Taxidrivers Fund for Underprivileged Children.
The Duchess is a patron of both charities, and the children were welcomed by Her Royal Highness before also being greeted by Captain Matt Wright in his full Welsh Guards uniform.
Together, the duchess and the children decorated the tree at the royal residence.
Meanwhile, Prince William recently admitted he fears he won't get any sleep this Christmas, because of his two young children.
The future king - who has a two-year-old son called George and a seven-month old daughter called Charlotte, with the Duchess of Cambridge - revealed his oldest child has suddenly become aware of the significance of Christmas.
Asked what he'll be doing to mark the big day, the prince said: "Well, if I get any sleep on Christmas Eve it'll be good, because George will be bouncing around like a rabbit. I think George will be extremely bouncy this year because he's suddenly worked out what Christmas is all about.
"So that will be two children, one who suddenly appreciates Christmas, which could be quite challenging. But I'm looking forward to it."

Duchess of Cambridge ‘is a Chelsea fan’

British Duchess of Cambridge has reportedly revealed her favourite soccer team is Chelsea.
The 33-year-old royal - whose husband, Prince William, is an ardent follower of Aston Villa - apparently acknowledged her favourite team during an engagement with a children's charity on Tuesday (15.12.15).
The Duchess bonded with one eight-year-old, named Rjay Bryan, over their support for the same club.
He explained: "We high fived because she supports Chelsea and I support Chelsea.
"I love people who support Chelsea."
Earlier this year, Prince William admitted he thinks it'd be "fantastic" if his son follows him in supporting Aston Villa.
Asked whether he'll try to influence the team his son supports, Prince William explained: "The responsible thing would be to say, to let [George] make his own mind up, but I think I might be quite biased.
"I haven't quite worked out how to play that yet. Of course he can support whoever he wants, but if he supports Villa, it'd be fantastic. I'd love to go to the odd match with him in the future.
"It'll probably end up being that [Princess] Charlotte is the Villa fan and George will go and support someone else!"

Prince Charles receives confidential Cabinet papers

Britain's Prince Charles has been receiving confidential government papers for decades.
The 67-year-old royal has had access to information intended only for the Cabinet, and Bernard Jenkin - the chair of the Commons constitutional committee - has argued ministers should have been more open about the controversial scenario.
He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "Obviously it would have much better if they would have been open on this point.
"They publish the Cabinet manual in which it might have been perfectly reasonable to make this clear, that these documents go to the heir of the throne."
The Cabinet Office spent three years fighting a freedom of information battle to keep its so-called "precedent book" secret - a move that has subsequently been criticised by the Conservative Party MP.
He said: "I imagine the precedent book itself contains precedents that are security sensitive, which are secret and should not be disclosed, and that is why in principle the precedent book has been protected.
"But this is the civil service in transition still from the period of secrecy to the period of freedom of information where they're still not used to drawing a line between what is secret and what is not secret."

Duchess Catherine is festive in red at Christmas party

Prince Harry follows in Diana’s footsteps

Prince Harry followed in his mother's footsteps when he visited Mildmay hospital on Monday (14.12.15).
The young royal's trip to the east London facility, which specialises in treating those with HIV, marked Mildmay's 150th anniversary.
Harry's late mother Princess Diana had a strong link with the hospital, and visited on 17 different occasions - three of them publicly.
She also helped contest the stigma surrounding those with HIV as she was pictured kissing somebody with the disease.
Harry looked smart in a navy suit with a powder blue tie as he met patients and staff at the hospital.
Upon speaking to Mildmay's fundraising director, Kerry Reeves-Kneip, Harry was told of the impact Diana's visits had on the hospital.
Kerry said: "She [Diana] came at such an important time - around this area local barbers wouldn't cut staff's hair. She really did break down the stigma.
"She gave a lot of love and comfort to the people here. She was absolutely incredible."
She also recalled a story from one of Diana's visits to the hospital, when she was interrupted by a phone call regarding one of her sons.
She said: "There was a telephone call from a school - one of you had clambered on to a school roof."
When Harry joked that it "was probably me", Kerry told him his mother had been amused by the incident, to which the prince replied, "Phew!"
