Rob Delaney celebrates 16 years of sobriety

Rob Delaney is celebrating 16 years of sobriety after his alcohol addiction nearly killed him.
The ‘Catastrophe’ star recalled his lowest point in 2002 when he blacked out while driving and crashed into a building in Los Angeles, breaking his left wrist, right arm and severely injuring both knees.
Rob tweeted: "As of today I’ve been sober 16 years. 16 yrs ago I was in jail in a wheelchair, covered in blood, both arms broken, after driving blackout drunk into a building. Today, I’m home with my wife & kids & I’m healthy. Thank you to all who’ve helped me. (sic)"
The 41-year-old actor – who lives in London with his wife and their three children – co-writes his hit sitcom with co-star Sharon Horgan, and he says the show is inspired by his own experiences of battling addiction.
He previously said: "Even when I was 16 years old, I thought, ‘Wow, how come all my other friends can just have fun with it?’ I was starting to black out even then, which is bad.
"It sucks to wake up and be like, ‘What did I do?’, and then be told and just be disgusted."
Speaking about regaining consciousness in jail after the accident 16 years ago, he recalled: "I asked the police if I’d killed anyone. They said no, but when I realised I could kill other people with my drinking, that paradigm shifted. I was cool if I died, but I just wanted to hurt myself, not other people."
The comedic actor also revealed that prior to the crash, he drank all his supply of beer and wine, and two "keg cups" full of vodka and bourbon.
Rob – whose on-screen character also crashed his car while drink-driving – added: That’s when I remember my consciousness stopping recording. Then the next thing I remember was being in the hospital surrounded by doctors and cops."
