Rick Astley announced for BBC’s Reel Stories

Rick Astley is set to take a nostalgic deep dive into his life and career as he joins Dermot O’Leary for a brand‑new edition of Reel Stories, airing on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer in February 2026.

The long‑running series, which launched in 2018, brings music icons into a London cinema where they revisit defining moments from their personal and professional journeys. Astley, who celebrates his 60th birthday next year, becomes the latest artist to sit opposite O’Leary for the intimate retrospective.

Reflecting on the experience, Astley said: “I loved doing Reel Stories with Dermot O’Leary, what a treat to be taken back to the start and come right through to today. Dermot is the perfect companion to go on that rollercoaster of emotion, love and thanks, Rick x.”

O’Leary was equally enthusiastic, adding: “What a pleasure to spend time with Rick and hear him talk so openly about his memories from over the decades. I’ve long been a fan of his… A true gent, wise soul and real talent. I hope that viewers enjoy this extended interview as much as I did.”

Rachel Davies, Commissioning Editor for BBC Pop Music TV, said the episode arrives at the perfect moment: “Reel Stories is all about telling artists’ stories in a unique way… I’m thrilled that in February, Dermot will be joined by the one and only Rick Astley, celebrating Rick’s life and work as he reaches his 60th birthday.”

The special will chart Astley’s rise from his early days in soul band FBI to his transformation into a global pop phenomenon under Stock Aitken Waterman. Viewers will see him revisit his Top of the Pops debut, reflect on the pressures of sudden worldwide fame after Never Gonna Give You Up topped charts in 25 countries, and discuss stepping away from the spotlight to focus on family life.

Astley also opens up about the unexpected resurgence of his music through the viral Rickrolling trend, his return to recording after two decades — encouraged by comedian Peter Kay — and his recent career renaissance, including his chart‑topping 2016 album 50 and his 2023 performance on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage.

The themed night will also feature a repeat of Astley’s Glastonbury set and Stock Aitken Waterman at the BBC, showcasing classic performances from Astley alongside Dead or Alive, Donna Summer, Bananarama, Mel and Kim, and Kylie and Jason Donovan.

Astley joins an impressive list of previous Reel Stories guests, including Dave Grohl, Jon Bon Jovi, Kylie, Noel Gallagher, Pet Shop Boys, Robbie Williams, Shania Twain, Rod Stewart, Sting, and Take That.
