Prince Charles visits Hurricane Irma survivors

Prince Charles has met with the survivors of Hurricane Irma.
The 68-year-old royal visited the British Virgin Island of Tortola over the weekend, where he was taken to see battered and crushed high school buildings, which were devastated by the natural disaster which took hold of the islands in September.
Whilst in Tortola, Charles had the chance to meet with some of those who had survived the hurricane, as his motorcade stopped at Elmore Stoutt High School, the main secondary school on the island, which has been left to the elements after being badly damaged in the destruction.
The royal also met with Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson during a reception being held on the island for organisations and individuals who played their part in helping during the aftermath of the natural disaster.
Richard said: "As far as the British Virgin Islands are concerned the people were magnificent in the way they pulled together, everybody’s helping everybody. People have lost their homes and others are putting them up, everybody’s helping trying to get water back and electricity back on, and it’s been tremendous.
"Strangely I sometimes think that in these crisis situations the community comes out even stronger after, then before. In times of trouble people pull together like never before, it’s been like a war situation."
Prince Charles’ visit to the Caribbean islands comes as part of the three-day trip to see for himself, alongside International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt, the destruction caused by both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria, after they tore through the region in September.
The Prince of Wales also paid visits to Barbuda, where he witnessed homes that had been ripped from their foundations, and Dominica, where he met with those who survived Hurricane Maria, the second disaster to strike the island in one month.
Charles also attended a reception at the Roseau Botanic Gardens where he presented its director with a letter from Richard Deverell, director of Kew Gardens, of which the Prince is patron, promising to offer support and assistance where needed.
