Gwyneth Paltrow helped Courtney Love overcome a prescription drug addiction.
The Hole rocker - who previously battled heroin addiction - admits she struggled with using ADHD medication Adderall in 2011 when she was experiencing problems with her daughter Frances, and will always be grateful to the 'Iron Man 3' actress for offering help.
Gwyneth intervened after Courtney sent a string of "crazy" unintelligible emails to her pals and the 'Malibu' hitmaker says that was what she needed to make her see she needed to stop taking the drug.
She told Britain's Grazia magazine: "I was a mess. I needed to get off it. Some crazy psychiatrist told me I needed it and I was writing all these crazy long emails and no one could understand what I was on about. I was alienating my friends.
"Gwyneth believed in me, she is a stalwart and I sent her a crazy email and all I got back was, 'Are you OK for cash and lawyers?' I didn't answer for three days and that was when I kicked Adderall."
Courtney admits it was "hard" to give up the drug, but once she had done so, she immediately thanked her pal for her support.
She added: "It took me a week to kick - it wasn't 'Trainspotting'-hard but it was psychological. I had a lot of sex.
"And then I replied to Gwyneth and said, 'I am not going to answer those questions' - cos, you know, I wasn't OK for cash or lawyers - 'but that you asked, I will never forget.' "
Courtney thought it was "naff" when the Gwyneth and her husband Chris Martin - who have children Apple and Moses together - announced their break-up by saying they were "consciously uncoupling", but admires the way they are conducting their separation.
She said: "There is no acrimony involved. Unfortunately 'consciously uncoupling' sounds a little naff. I got the Goop email and I, like everyone else, was like, 'Oh man.'
"But even though it doesn't sound semantically that great, like, would 'nice divorce' be better? They really do love each other and they are trying to do a good thing that isn't often done."

James McAvoy says Jennifer Lawrence is a "demon".
The Scottish actor appears alongside the Oscar winning beauty in the new movie 'X Men: Days of Future Past', and was surprised by how well she kept up with her male counterparts on set.
He told Details magazine: "She's a demon, period. She can throw a punch, she's got a good shot, she can drink. She's proper. I like that girl."
James - who plays Professor Charles Xavier in the movie - is no stranger to starring with beautiful leading ladies after he appeared in 2008's 'Wanted' opposite Angelina Jolie.
He jokingly boasted: "I kissed f***ing Angelina Jolie. Yes, we had a bit of a snog."
When asked how her fiance, Brad Pitt, felt about that, he added: "I am sure he's deeply unthreatened, deeply unmoved, and probably reassured in his masculinity. Probably."
James was interviewed alongside Michael Fassbender, who is also in the new X Men movie playing Magneto, and he admitted he missed Lupita Nyong'o's Oscar acceptance speech when she won Best Supporting Actress for their film '12 Years a Slave'.
He explained: "I was taking a p**s. And I did have a sneaky vodka tonic. But I got totally caught out, because I was thinking that category was going to be way down the line. And then, of course, you can't get back in until it's a commercial break, so I watched it backstage. "I felt pretty embarrassed about that... So there's a stand-in beside my mom. And Brad Pitt said he could hear them going, 'Michael Fassbender? Where's Michael Fassbender?' Bad timing on my part."

Robert Pattinson "doesn't know" if he has an audience outside of the 'Twilight' movies.
The actor is still best known for his role as teen vampire Edward Cullen in the hugely successful movie franchise, but he's trying to take on roles which will paint him in a different light, such as his appearance in action drama 'The Rover' and indie flick 'Maps to the Stars'.
Speaking at the Cannes film festival in France, he said: "I had done so many parts where I was super-still - like the whole of 'Twilight'. It's so restrictive.
"You do something [like 'The Rover'] where you have blood all over your face, you can't be expected to fit into any kind of mould.
"Also, I don't really know who my audience is. I don't know if I have an audience. Outside of 'Twilight', I don't know."
The somewhat surly star is also doing his best to stay out of the spotlight off-camera since his split from Kristen Stewart.
He added: "I'm just trying to not be in stupid gossip magazines, basically, and I think the best way to do it is never be photographed ever
"As I get older, I just get more and more and more self-conscious about getting photographed. I don't know why. I've done it too many times and now I feel like everyone can see through me."
Despite insisting he does not want to be photographed, Robert is currently starring in a huge advertising campaign for fragrance Dior Homme, which sees his image appear in adverts in magazines around the world. He also graces the cover of the most recent issue of France's Premiere magazine, with an accompanying photoshoot inside.

Paris Hilton was "flirting" with Justin Bieber when they partied together in Cannes.
The socialite and the 'Confident' singer are both currently in the South of France for the annual film festival and got close when she reportedly sat on the younger star's lap at Gotha nightclub.
An onlooker told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Paris had a private table above the DJ setup at the nightclub and was clearly loving being out and being the centre of attention. She was trying to dance sexily and looked really up for a party."
Paris - who is dating model River Viiperi - wasn't too happy about people taking photos, with the source adding: "She hit the roof when people started filming her and she was yelling, 'I can't be filmed by a rival club - I'm being paid a lot of money to appear in another club!'
"Her people stepped in to calm her down and persuade her to return to her table, where she then started dancing, sucking on a lollipop and flirting with Justin again."
The 33-year-old hotel heiress also reportedly left with the 20-year-old singer and his entourage to carry on their party back at his mansion, but wasn't too impressed with his musical choices and left soon after.
A source added: "Paris ended up leaving the party after half an hour when Justin was just playing his own songs. She said the party was really lame."

Angelina Jolie perfected her voice for Maleficent while bathing her kids.
The 38-year-old star tried out a number of different way of talking with her brood - Maddox, 12, Pax, 10, Zahara, nine, Shiloh, seven, and twins Knox and Vivienne, five - to perfect the way she should talk as the evil queen in the new Disney movie.
She explained to website Access Hollywood: "I would give them baths and I would try different voices on them, on different nights. I would tell them stories in different voices and sometimes they would kind of go, 'That's a weird voice mom, why are you doing that?'
"When I did the one they all started laughing and made me do it over and over again and that's how I discovered her voice because I thought, it had to be a voice that is just fun to listen to and get really crazy."
Although Angelina and her fiance Brad Pitt don't want their children to go into acting, they allowed Vivienne to play a young Princess Aurora in the movie, but getting her to do what they wanted on set proved harder than they initially realised.
Angelina added: "Her first day on set was when she was [in a scene] trying to catch the butterfly, which was a day that I wasn't working and so mommy and daddy had to be the kind of, the set parents trying to get her to do everything.
"I was holding the stick... with the blue thing on it and kind of dancing and making her follow me, and Brad was on the edge of the cliff kind of singing and making dances and trying to get her to jump into his arms. And it was ridiculous. We were exhausted by the end of that day. It was so hard."

Pierce Brosnan's best love advice is to "look after yourself" and have "grace under pressure".
The former James Bond star knows plenty about romance and advises that when it comes to unrequited love, you should always look after yourself first.
He told The Huffington Post: "Just because I look the way I look or do what I do doesn't mean that I'm like that and do that every day of my life. It's an illusion. I'm just a guy. I know the pain and deep heartache of wanting to be with someone who doesn't really give you the attention.
"[My advice is to] take your foot off the pedal. Just look after yourself. Protect your heart, and have a sense of grace about it all. Grace under pressure."
Pierce, 60, also knows a great deal about heartbreak, after he lost his first wife, Cassandra Harris, to Ovarian cancer in 1981 and her daughter, Charlotte - whom he adopted in 1986 - to the same condition in 2013.
He added: "It all goes by so quickly, anyway. Love is hard. It's really hard, especially when they get you by the heart strings."
However, the Irish-born star - who is now married to Keely Shaye Smith - is happy in his everyday life and pleased he can still make a living out of acting.
He added: "I'm happy. I've always been happy, actually. I've always loved doing what I do. Once I found acting and found that I could get away with it and make a living out of it, I was thrilled."
Pierce next stars in 'The Love Punch' Opposite Emma Thompson, which opens in cinemas this month.

Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith are reportedly under investigation by child protection services.
The Los Angeles Department of Children & Family Services are said to have been in contact with the parents after their 13-year-old daughter, Willow, appeared in a picture posted on the internet of her laying on a bed with actor Moises Arias, 20.
A source told RadarOnline.com: "The investigation was formally opened last week and is being taken very seriously by the department.
"Will and Jada Pinkett Smith have been extremely cooperative with officials. Of course, they aren't happy that their parenting skills are under scrutiny, but they understand."
In the controversial black and white pictures Willow is wearing jeans and a shirt, while Moises appears shirtless as they lay close together on a bed. It is thought the pictures were taken over one weekend of the Coachella festival in Indio, California, which also raises questions about what level of adult supervision the youngsters had at the event.
The source added: "Social workers will also be talking separately with Willow, and they also want to talk to the young man in the picture with her as well.
"This won't just be one or two visits with the family, and it will likely be an open investigation for at least a month, out of an abundance of caution."
Jada, 42, was angry when she was asked about the photo earlier this month.
She said: "Here's the deal. There was nothing sexual about that picture or that situation."
Will and Jada also have a son, Jaden, who is 15.

Channing Tatum is a "high functioning alcoholic".
The '22 Jump Street' star admits he drinks too much, and he uses it as a way for him to escape the rigours of everyday life.
He told GQ magazine: "I probably drink too much, you know. My wife [Jenna Dewan], that's what she bought into... I'm probably a pretty high-functioning, I guess, you know, I would say, alcoholic, I guess.
"There's probably a tendency to escape. I equate it to creativity, and I definitely equate it to having a good time."
The hunky 34-year-old also admitted to another, less dangerous, vice in watching TV show 'The Biggest Loser', where a group of overweight people compete to see who can lose the most pounds fastest.
He added: "I really do love it. It's terrible and it's bad, but I really do think it's because I have an inner fat kid in me.
"I can completely lose myself into just absolutely satisfying things - a really amazing cheeseburger, a pizza, good fries, a beer. I enjoy being comfortable and eating whatever the hell I like."
Channing also admits to having his own imaginary friend when he was younger.
He said: "His name was Boy. I think I just lived in an imaginary world. I was always playing war in the woods, people are chasing me... I wasn't doing it because I was desperate for friends. I had friends."

The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star was spotted holding the model's hand as he took her to dinner over the weekend, but Miranda Kerr - whom he split from seven months ago after two years of marriage - says they aren't dating.
She told MailOnline.com: "They're just friends. They've been friends for years. We spoke about it, we speak every day. It's fine."
Miranda - who has recently been linked to billionaire James Packer - added her male friends are also often mistaken for boyfriends.
She said: "People try to put me together with people I've been friends with for years.
"As long as I know the truth and people close to me know the truth, that's all that matters.
"At the end of the day I can't be phased by other people's opinions, and people are entitled to their opinion.
"Someone linked me with Brad Pitt, I've spoken to him once in my whole life."
Orlando, 37, and Miranda, 31, are parents to three-year-old son Flynn and stay in close contact because they are committed to co-parenting him.
The Victoria's Secret model has previously told how she has dealt with the difficulties of the breakdown of her relationship through prayer.
She said: "Everyone goes through challenging periods in their life. That's inevitable and it's part of being human. I feel like it's a daily process to be positive."

Kate Winslet is planning to "take some serious risks" with her career.
The 'Divergent' actress is ready to return to acting just five months after giving birth to her third child, Bear, and is planning to seriously challenge herself with the roles she takes on.
She told Harper's Bazaar magazine: "It's time to get back. Back to the 'I don't f**k around,' back to the basics of take some serious risks, put yourself out there. And just really push it."
Kate has Bear with her husband Ned Rocknroll, but also raises Mia, 13, from her marriage to Jim Threapleton and Joe, 10, who she has with second husband Sam Mendes, and says her busy life as a mother doesn't always allow her time for pampering.
She said: "I know it sounds very self-effacing because people say, 'Oh, you're a film star. People probably come to your house to [pamper you].' But I don't have the time to get my nails done apart from when I'm doing a photo shoot."
The 38-year-old star also talked the fateful day when she met Ned, when his uncle, Sir Richard Branson's, mansion caught fire on Necker Island in the Caribbean.
She explained: "We really could have died, the house burned to the ground."
Kate saved Richard's mother, Eve, from the fire, explaining: "I carried her out of the house and down some very slippery stone steps. Lucky she's tiny.
"She's my son's great-grandmother now, so it's such a strange thing to talk about."
