Spain's new King Felipe paid tribute to his parents yesterday (19.06.14).
The 46-year-old royal took the throne following the abdication of his father King Juan Carlos and hailed the former monarch's "exceptional reign" in a speech after his swearing-in ceremony.
He said: "I wish to pay a tribute of gratitude to and respect for my father, King Juan Carlos I.
"From today, an exceptional reign becomes part of our history, one that has left an extraordinary political legacy. Almost 40 years ago, from this same rostrum, my father stated that he intended to be King for all the Spanish people. And this he has been...
"Today we render to the person of King Juan Carlos the appreciation he deserves, from a generation of citizens who paved the way for democracy, for understanding among Spaniards and for their coexistence in a climate of freedom.
"That generation, under his leadership and with the very prominent contribution of the Spanish people, laid the foundations of a political construct that overcame apparently insurmountable differences, achieved reconciliation among Spaniards, acknowledged the plural nature of Spain and restored our nation to its place in the world."
Felipe then went on to thank his mother Queen Sofia for her "dedication and loyalty".
He added: "Honourable Members, let me also thank my mother, Queen Sofía, for her impeccable, lifetime's work on behalf of the Spanish people. Her dedication and loyalty to King Juan Carlos, her dignity and her sense of responsibility are exemplary and merit the heartfelt tribute of gratitude that, as her son and as King, I extend to her today."
The new king expressed his hope that his parents will be able to "devote" themselves to their country for many years to come.
He said: "Together, for over 50 years, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía have devoted themselves to Spain. I trust that for many more years we shall continue to enjoy their support, their experience and their affection."

Britain's Zara Phillips will compete in the World Equestrian Games.
The former world eventing champion - who is the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth - has been named in Great Britain's squad for the forthcoming competition, and couldn't be happier to be joining Tina Cook, William Fox-Pitt, Pippa Funnell, Izzy Taylor and Oliver Townsend in the tournament.
Zara said: "It's fantastic to be part of a team again."
The 33-year-old sportswoman - who gave birth to daughter Mia, her first child with husband Mike Tindall, in January - is confident about the chances she and her horse High Kingdom have at the games, which take place in Normandy, France, in August.
She added: "High Kingdom has improved each year and every time I've taken him to a big competition he's got better and better.
"He's felt good this year and hopefully will peak at the right time."
In 2012, Zara was the first member of the royal family to win an Olympic medal, taking silver as part of the Team GB eventing team.
She now has her sights set on competing in the 2016 Olympics, which will be staged in Rio, Brazil.

Kasabian want to play a gig on Mount Everest.
The Leicester band, who are performing a huge homecoming concert tomorrow (21.06.14) before headlining Glastonbury next week, want to reach even greater heights by being the first act to perform on the mountain.
Singer Tom Meighan told the Daily Star newspaper: "We can only top headlining Glastonbury by being the absolute top of the pops and aiming big.
"We should do a gig up Mount Everest, that'd be immense. We'd love to headline Wembley Stadium too.
"We could sell Wembley out. It'd be fantastic to have a massive a show as we could in the capital."
The 'Eez-eh' band, also made up of guitarist Serge Pizzorno, Chris Edwards and Ian Matthews, have just hit the number one spot with their new album '48:13' and they admit they've argued recently over the World Cup, with Serge supporting Italy and Tom rooting for England.
They now watch matches apart after Italy beat England 2-1 last Saturday (14.06.14).
Tom said: "We watched it in a hotel in Poland before a gig and Serge had to change rooms.
"Serge was meant to be in the room next to mine, but he went: 'No chance!' and moved to a different floor.
"He knew I'd have been knocking on his door the whole match, winding him up."
Meanwhile, the band insist they have no plans to record a soccer song because they don't think any band could record a better song than 'The Lightening Seeds' anthem, which was released in 1996.
Tom said: "You can't beat Three Lions, so why try? That was a one-off moment when Britpop was buzzing and Euro '96 was held in England."
The band will perform tomorrow at Victoria Park in Leicester with a DJ support set from Rudimental, before headlining Glastonbury along with Arcade Fire and Metallica.

Will Young thinks 'The X Factor' is too predictable.
The 35-year-old singer admits he "f***ing loved" early TV talent shows like 'Pop Idol', which he won in 2001, because of their innocence and believes contestants appearing on Simon Cowell's current ITV singing programme are too aware of their future.
Speaking to Digital Spy, he said: "Everything evolves. 'Pop Idol' looks like 'Eurovision' from the 1970s now, but I f***ing loved it.
"People know the possibilities [now]. I didn't know the possibilities, so it genuinely was really exciting. It's always different when there's a knowingness to it. It is what it is."
Meanwhile, Will, who is currently writing his sixth studio album and is planning to release it in 2015, admits even after 13 years in the industry, his passion for creating music hasn't been diluted.
He explained: "I'm [making music] that is more exciting than ever. I think if I was just doing the same thing, I would be bored. It would feel like a long trudge if you were like, 'Oh God, here we go again', but it actually just gets better and better. It's flown by."
'The X Factor' is set to return to screens this autumn with Simon, Louis Walsh, Cheryl Cole and Mel B all confirmed for the judging panel.

'Benefits Street' has been axed.
Plans to film a second series of the Channel 4 reality show in Birmingham have been ditched because the cast, including notorious benefits scrounger White Dee, have allegedly demanded five-figure salaries.
Producers are reportedly holding crisis meetings with some of the key residents of James Turner Street, many of whom are unemployed and living off welfare, in the hope of brining them back.
Dee, 42, whose real name is Deirdre Kelly, told the Daily Star newspaper: "Producers had meetings with certain residents in the hope of coming back. But, because of how we felt - we were misled in series one - they didn't get anywhere.
"The series has had a major effect. The community spirit has completely gone. People have moved away and it has caused arguments."
The series was a ratings hit for Channel 4, but the show has come under fire from viewers at a time when benefits continue to be cut across the country.
Dee's agent, Barry Tomes, added: "She is not budging and is relieved they have knocked it on the head."
However, TV bosses have claimed they never had any plans to film any more 'Benefits Street' episodes.
A Channel 4 spokesman said: "There are no plans to film a second series of 'Benefits Street'."

Justin Moorhouse will play a rival pub landlord in 'Coronation Street'.
The comedian-and-actor has been cast as Dean Upton, the owner of the Flying Horse pub, for a short stint to air in August.
Dean will take on fellow pub landlord Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), who runs the cobbles' famous boozer, the Rovers Return, in a game of cricket.
Justin said: "I'm delighted to be treading the cobbles. It's always been a dream of mine to appear in the Rovers Return, even though as Dean, landlord of the Flying Horse, I feel like I'm a spy."
The comic is known for his roles in 'Phoenix Nights' and 'Looking for Eric'.
He will film his scenes for 'Corrie' prior to performing a stand-up comedy show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Meanwhile, there are unhappy times ahead for soap favourite Steve next week as he takes account of his life ahead of his 40th birthday.
While his mum Liz McDonald (Beverley Callard) and girlfriend Michelle Connor (Kym Marsh) are eager to celebrate the landmark birthday, Steve is less joyful.
A source told Inside Soap magazine: "The prospect of turning 40 can be scary for anyone, but Steve takes it particularly badly. It's at times like this that people step back to assess their lives and look at what they've achieved - and poor Steve reckons he doesn't have much to show for his life."

Maggie Gyllenhaal feels like a "fully fledged Brit" after perfecting an English accent.
The Hollywood actress takes a lead role in BBC Two's new political thriller, 'The Honourable Woman', and thinks her Anglo accent is good enough to be considered an honourary Briton.
She told the Daily Star newspaper: "I've worked on two plays and two movies with an English accent so I knew I was competent. It wasn't like I was learning from scratch, but this was the first time I've ever felt like it was really in my bones. I love talking with an English accent, I now feel like a fully fledged Anglophile."
In the new political drama, Maggie - best known for her roles in blockbuster movies such as 'The Dark Knight' and 'White House Down' - plays activist Nessa Stein, who unwittingly finds herself mixed up in a secret conspiracy.
Speaking about her TV alter-ego, the 36-year-old star added: "[She's] a powerful, smart, grown-up woman who is also deeply flawed. She is hard and sensual, brave and childlike, all at once."
The eight-part series begins on BBC Two next month.

Simon Cowell's horse came last in its first race.
The music mogul and 'Britain's Got Talent' presenters Ant and Dec saw their filly compete for the first time on Wednesday (18.06.14) in the SIS Live Maiden Stakes in Ripon, North Yorkshire, but were left unimpressed by its performance.
Simon tweeted: "The horse I bought with Ant and Dec 'It's a yes from me' had his first race last night. He came 5th. Out of five. Oops.(sic)"
The race was won by the favourite, Dutch Breeze.
It was previously revealed that Simon - who was rumoured to want to name his four-month-old son after himself before settling on Eric in honour of his father - wanted the horse to be his namesake until his co-owners convinced him otherwise.
Dec - whose real name is Declan Donnelly - previously said: ''We had to name it because it wasn't named for racing, so we had a chat with Simon.
''His first suggestion was, 'I think we should call him Simon'.''
They eventually settled on 'It's A Yes From Me', a reference to the judges' comments on Simon's TV talent shows

Kanye West has slammed US President Barack Obama.
The 'Bound 2' rapper hit out at the Commander-in-Chief, insisting he can't do anything to "effect change" without "money" - though he then went on to proclaim "genius" to be "extremely cheap".
Asked about the president in an interview with Power106FM, he ranted: "You can't effect change from inside the White House like that ...You gotta have the money.
"Good ideas usually aren't connected to money as much ...Creativity and extreme genius are extremely cheap."
Kanye - who has 12-month-old daughter North with wife Kim Kardashian - then went on to warn his critics not to slam him as he is on a "mission from God".
He said: "Don't worry about how I'm saying what I'm saying. Look at what I'm saying and how I feel my intent is.
"You do not want to go against the power. I'm working on one mission, and that's a mission from God.
"I'm gonna make it very clear exactly what I'm here to do. I'm here to help. I'm going to apply all the blessings I've got.
"We're moving to the future. [And] I'm gonna be the anchor."
Just last November, Kanye vowed never to mention the president again as he felt the politician - who has criticised the rapper on a number of occasions - was using his name to be "down" with young people.
He said: ''I just think that we're pop icons, and the president likes to use that type of thing just to be down.

Cindy Crawford's daughter has a crush on Harry Styles.
The 48-year-old supermodel's eldest child Kaia, 12, made her modelling debut for Versace two years ago and though the American beauty - who also has 14-year-old son Presley with husband Rande Gerber - will help her daughter "navigate" the fashion industry if she decides to follow in her mother's career path, she says the youngster is currently more interested in other things.
She said: "[Versace] was a one-off thing. She had fun. She's 12. We'll see what happens. I can at least help her navigate it. She's more interested in singing and dancing. Right now she's interested in Harry Styles."
While Cindy is comfortable with getting older, she admits she envies her daughter's legs.
She told USA Today newspaper: "I look at my 12-year-old daughter. She has my legs. I told her that I want my legs back."
Meanwhile, Cindy heaped praise on her close friend George Clooney's fiancee Amal Alamuddin, describing her as "lovely" but insisted that, despite reports they will wed in Italy in September, no details have been finalised yet.
Asked whether she could reveal the date and location of the wedding, she said: "I actually don't know yet."

Victoria Beckham carries crystals to bring her luck at her fashion shows.
The 40-year-old fashion designer has a number of superstitious rituals, including carrying Pink Quartz and Black Tourmaline precious stones while backstage at her catwalk shows.
Speaking to students at a Singapore art college, she said: "If I told you my backstage rituals, and was honest you would think I was a little weird. I carry my crystals with me which some people might think as odd but it works for us."
Victoria - who lives in London with her former soccer star husband David Beckham and their children Brooklyn, 15, Romeo, 12, Cruz, nine, and two-year-old Harper - runs her self-named fashion brand out of New York and admits that while she's enjoying her success, she still worries about bad omens.
She said: "New York works and my team are happy there. We have a great set up there. We go to the same hotel. But I am quite superstitious. I don't walk underneath ladders. And if I see magpies I do the salute thing."
According to an urban myth, magpies are said to bring bad luck and fate believers say that in order to reverse it you must salute the birds and wish them a "good morning".

Gerry Goffin has died aged 75.
The songwriter, who penned worldwide hits such as 'The Loco-Motion' and '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman' with ex-wife Carole King, passed away at his home in Los Angeles from natural causes on Wednesday (18.06.14).
Carole paid tribute to her former husband and lyrical partner in a statement, saying: "Gerry Goffin was my first love. He had a profound impact on my life and the rest of the world. Gerry was a good man and a dynamic force, whose words and creative influence will resonate for generations to come.
"His legacy to me is our two daughters, four grandchildren, and our songs that have touched millions and millions of people, as well as a lifelong friendship. He will be missed by his wonderful wife Michele, his devoted manager, Christine Russell, his five children, and six grandchildren.
"His words expressed what so many people were feeling but didn't know how to say. If you want to join his loved ones in honouring him, look at the names of the songwriters under the titles of songs. Among the titles associated with me, you'll often find Gerry's name next to mine."
Gerry and Carole wed in 1959, when he was 20 and she was 17, and began songwriting together, penning hits such as 'Will You Love Me Tomorrow?' for The Shirelles and 'Pleasant Valley Sunday' for The Monkees.
The couple divorced in 1968 and Gerry later married Michele Goffin, who survives him.
After splitting from Carole both professionally and personally, the songwriter continued to enjoy success by co-writing songs such as 'Saving All My Love for You', which performed by the late Whitney Houston.
