Liv Tyler doesn't think family life can "flourish" if you focus on your career.
The 36-year-old star - who is the daughter of Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and raises 10-year-old son Milo with ex-husband Royston Langdon - believes it is impossible to perfectly balance a personal and professional life and one will always suffer at the expense of the other.
She told UK's Red magazine: "Perhaps I shouldn't think this way but, from a very young age, I had this idea in my head...
"That if you are very successful in your career and you're giving all of your attention to that, then your family life will not ... I need to word this in the right way....
"The life of your family possibly won't flourish as it might. But when you focus on your family and you put that first, then your career suffers in some sort of way.
"I can live with the career part not going so well, I think, but I don't think I could live with my family not."
Liv admires her A-List pals, designer Stella McCartney and actress Gwyneth Paltrow - who has kids Apple, nine, and Moses, eight, with estranged husband Chris Martin - for the way they have managed to strike a healthy balance between work and motherhood.
She added: "I see Stella [McCartney] whenever she's here, and we have a weird, crazy conversation, say 'I love you' and then she's jetting off back to London.
"She's got four kids, and a million businesses. And Gwyneth's just really good at everything. She's very organised, whereas I'm far more sensitive and adaptable.
"She's good at structure and routine and schedules, whereas I get lost all the time. I'm always late and always rushing."

Dean McDermott has Tori Spelling's name tattooed above his penis.
The '90210' actress discussed the intimate inking with a group of friends on last night's (27.05.14) episode of 'True Tori' after one of them suggested her spouse - who admitted to having a one-night stand in Toronto last December - should sign a contract saying he'd never cheat or drink again, and if he did he would get "nothing".
Tori initially joked he should get the document tattooed on him but then admitted body art didn't prevent him cheating before.
She said: "Should I have him do a tattoo on his body? I mean clearly that didn't stop him. You know the tattoo he has, right? Down there it says 'Tori's'.
'"It's above [his penis]. It's above the pubis. It says 'Tori's'. And then months later he cheated on me."
The episode saw the couple repeatedly clash over whether Dean should return to Toronto to shoot a new series of 'Chopped Canada', and though Tori was initially adamant he should put their family first and stay at home, she eventually relented and agreed it would be best for his career to make the trip.
As her left, Dean - who has children Liam, seven, Stella, five, Hattie, two, and Finn, 21 months, with his wife - vowed to be "Mother Theresa" while he was away as he didn't want to jeopardise the progress they have made in repairing their marriage.
He said: "You and the kids are more important than the show...
"I know what's at stake here. But I will not let them down.
'I'm going to be Mother Teresa, I'm going to be so good. These babies are my life."

A sequel to 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' is in the works.
Nia Vardalos is reprising her role as Toula Portokalos, in the follow-up to 2002's comedy with John Corbett who played her love interest in the original, and feels she's ready to take on the project since she's "experiencing motherhood" after she adopted a daughter, Ilaria, with husband Ian Gomez.
Vardolas wrote on Twitter: "I'm working on the MBFGWedding sequel; now that I'm experiencing motherhood I feel ready to write this next chapter.
"A few jaded press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true. (sic)"
Later she added: "Re: #MyBigFatGreekWedding2, thank you for the love, yes the entire big fat family is invited back for the sequel. (sic)"
Vardalos has written the script for the project and the plot involves a "bigger and fatter" wedding than that in the first film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks will produce with Gary Goetzman, and no director has been cast yet.
'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' generally positive reviews and was a box office success and grossing over $368.7 million worldwide.

Chris Martin doesn't care that people think Coldplay aren't "cool".
The 'Magic' singer admits the group - also made up of Johnny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion - have never been seen as fashionable but after scoring the fastest-selling album of 2014 with 'Ghost Stories', they have proved they have longevity.
Chris, 37, said: "We have never been the coolest thing or the most fashionable thing. Well, maybe for a period.
"It just feels like we're able to keep rolling and no-one really notices.
"I feel like every day we're given is a real blessing. I could not have asked for a more dreamy job."
Although the band have had repeated success and toured the world, they realise Coldplay may not last forever, according to the Daily Star newspaper.
Chris said: "If we're in that place in 10 years, that's amazing. But if we're not, that's okay."
The singer has always promised he would not split the band up to launch a solo career and admits he's even had nightmares about sacking their drummer Will.
He recalled: "I woke up in a cold sweat and I called Will. From that day forward, we've always shared all the money and all the credit."
The frontman, who split from wife Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, recently, has revealed the band are not planning to tour this year to give them a break from gigging.
Talking about their new album, he also told BBC Radio 1: "What 'Ghost Stories' means to me is you've got to open yourself up to love. And if you really do, of course it will be painful, but then it will be great."

The Libertines are hoping to secure a new record deal after their reunion gig at London's Hyde Park.
The 'Can't Stand Me Now' band - made up of Pete Doherty, Carl Barat, Gary Powell and John Hassall - are hoping a new contract will help boost their comeback.
The indie band have confirmed they will reunite for Barclaycard presents British Summer Time Hyde Park on July 5, supported by Pogues, Spiritualized, Maximo Park and The Enemy, and have hinted that they would like to record new material and work on unfinished songs after the gig.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "They are touting themselves around labels to sign a deal on the back of the show."
The Libertines formed in 1997 and were originally signed to Rough Trade before they split in 2004, after their success was often eclipsed by singer Pete's addictions to crack cocaine and heroin.
The band later reformed in 2010 for massive reunion shows at Leeds and Reading Festivals and four years later they look set for another big comeback.
Co-frontman Carl admits the reunion isn't without risks, telling NME magazine: "For me, the right reasons are, can we do it? Do people want to do it? Would it be a good thing to do? And I don't f***ing know. I'm not saying for a second that it's without a colossal risk, doing this."
Meanwhile, Carl has also formed a new band, The Jackals, and plans to continue work with the group as well as focusing on The Libertines, while sources say Pete has also been working on a new solo album.
The Libertines have announced they will be playing at Glasgow Barrowland on Sunday, June 29 as a warm-up for their show at Hyde Park and The Benicassim Festival in Spain on July 19.

Katy Perry shared a beer with a fan at her concert in London last night (27.05.14).
The pop princess enjoyed a pint which came up through the stage with her acoustic guitar during her 'Prismatic World Tour' show at The O2 arena, but after taking a few gulps and repeatedly burping, Katy found a guy in the crowd to give it to along with her "cooties".
Before performing 'The One That Got Away', she said: "I was just expecting my guitar but I have a pint of beer ... I've got to stop (drinking it) otherwise I'll be burping through this song. Someone help me out with this beer. I'm looking for a specific person, the guy who was dragged here by his girlfriend. You sir have this and have my cooties forever."
Earlier, Katy opened her incredible show with 'Roar' wearing a flashing neon dress and backed by spear-wielding soldiers dabbed in luminous paint.
The concert was split into four sections and after the Prism part, the singer played an Egyptian-themed set during which she rode a huge horse while dressed as Cleopatra for 'Dark Horse'.
She then performed a rock version of "oldie but goodie" 'I Kissed A Girl' which saw her two guitarists fly through the air as sparks streamed from their instruments.
Her Cat-Oure section featured a version of 'Hot n Cold' seemingly inspired by the musical 'Cats' with Katy spinning round the impressive prism-shaped stage in a jewel-encrusted pink pussy bodysuit backed by her feline dancers followed up with a rendition of 'International Smile' which merged into a brief cover of Madonna's 'Vogue'.
The 29-year-old star exposed her emotional side during her Acoustic set and alluded to her split from ex-husband Russell Brand as she introduced a moving performance of 'By The Grace of God'.
She told her fans: "This next song I was a little bit nervous about writing it, because I'm a pop star and pop stars are supposed to be invincible. But I wanted to write it for anyone who thinks they're going through something on they're own. Like, 'He's tweeting and he's not texting me back.' You hear this song and you're not so alone. Remember when you can't get out if bed because things are so hard, just remember Katy Perry - the girl with many hair colours - put one foot forward and got out of bed."
Her final tracks - dubbed her Hyper Neon section - proved Katy is the queen of bubblegum pop as she had the sell-out crowd on their feet screaming for 'Teenage Dream', 'California Gurls' and latest single 'Birthday' - during which she brought one lucky birthday girl named Hayley on stage to sit on a throne and take a selfie with her idol before the singer then floated off around the arena clutching a bunch of balloons.
Katy - who closed her stunning set with 'Firework' - will play three more shows at The O2 this week; tonight (28.05.14), Friday (30.05.14) and Saturday (31.05.14).

Britain's Prince Harry tried to win back his ex-girlfriend by cooking her dinner.
The 29-year-old royal, who split from Cressida Bonas last month, reportedly spent time making her a romantic meal at Kensington Palace last week and wants to try and save their relationship.
According to Vanity Fair, his friends attempted to cheer him up by taking him for a night out in London at Chakana Club, where he was seen drinking shots, but he is still "smitten" with Cressida, who he dated on and off for about two years.
A source said: "His friends organised a night out for him because Harry has been so miserable lately. He is not over Cressida, and if he could have his way, he would be back with her.
"The ball is in her court as to whether they get back together. She loves Harry, but she really doesn't love what comes with being a royal girlfriend."
The pair's split was said to be amicable but Cressida, 25, was reportedly worried after seeing the attention Kate Middleton and husband Prince William received during their royal trip recently.
The source added: "Cressida watched Kate on the royal tour of Australia and New Zealand and totally freaked. She just said, 'There's no way I can do that'."

'Coronation Street' star Marc Baylis admits he's worried about the reaction from the soap's fans after his character was revealed as Tina McIntyre's killer last night (27.05.14).
The actor, who plays Rob Donovan, was seen in dramatic scenes throwing Tina from the builders' yard balcony after she threatened to reveal his secrets and ruin his sister Carla's marriage to Peter Barlow, after the two started having an affair, and Marc claims he might have to go to work in a disguise to hide from fans.
He told The Sun newspaper: "I think I will swim into work across the canal so no one can see me!
"I will just have to take all the flack - and all the eggs - on the chin. Or I will have to find new techniques to hide away."
This week, viewers will see Tina battle for her life in intensive care but fans have known for months that the brunette beauty, played by Michelle Keegan, was going to be killed off in the ITV soap, although the killer's identity has been kept a secret and Marc is now "massively relieved" it's out in the open.
He said: "We had been talking about the storyline since October. It has been a lot of hard work keeping my lips tightly sealed."
Although viewers know Rob is responsible for the crime, they won't see him arrested for the attack straight away as the criminal tries to pin it on someone else.
Marc said: "Rob is not a stupid man so he knows where to point the finger, where to play the innocent and where to play different cards that will protect him and cast shadows on to other characters."
However, Rob didn't plan the murder and ends up staging a break-in at Tina's flat to cover his tracks as the emotional effects of what he has done take their toll.
Marc said: "There are a lot of twists afterwards. It pulls him closer to his roots. Rob becomes slightly more family-orientated. It is not just, 'He is a killer now.'
"We see how he deals with it psychologically. There is a lot of good stuff and a lot of good twists."

Benji Madden is "madly in love" with Cameron Diaz.
The Good Charlotte rocker only stated dating the Hollywood actress a few weeks ago after being introduced to her via his twin brother Joel Madden's wife Nicole Richie, but the guitarist is already completely smitten with her.
An insider told the New York Post newspaper's Page Six column: "Benji is madly in love with Cameron, but she wants to take it slow -- he isn't her usual type. He has dated a lot of Nicole's friends in the past but Nicole really wants this one to work."

Michelle Rodriguez has reportedly broken up with Cara Delevingne for good.
The 35-year-old actress is said to have ended her relationship with the Burberry model - who she began dating earlier this year - because of her constant partying with young female celebrities such as her fellow model Suki Waterhouse and 'What Now' hitmaker Rihanna.

Bruce Willis' wife has shared the first pictures of their new baby daughter.
The 'Die Hard' star and spouse Emma Heming-Willis welcomed their second daughter, Evelyn, into the world three weeks ago and are delighted she has already begun to bond with her older sister, two-year-old Mabel.
Emma posted a picture on Instagram of Mabel cradling her sister's head while the baby gazes up at the older girl and added the caption:
"The start of a beautiful friendship."
The 35-year-old brunette also shared a photograph on her Facebook page at the weekend of herself breastfeeding the new addition to their family.
Emma recently revealed her 59-year-old husband - who also has daughters Rumer, 25, Scout, 22, and Tallulah, 19, with ex-wife Demi Moore - is a "hands-on" father and she will always be grateful for his support.
Speaking shortly before Evelyn's birth, she said: "Luckily, Bruce decided to take some time off to help with Mabel during my pregnancy. He's a very hands-on dad - and secretly I think he'd like to be a stay-at-home dad.
"He's all hands on - and thankfully so. I really couldn't do it without him. That's why I have such respect for single parents. My mom was a single parent, she worked three jobs to support us. I look back and think, 'How could she juggle it all and not lose her mind?'
"I'm so grateful to have such a dedicated dad for our child ... He's a family man. He loves being a dad."
