The 'Hawaii Five-0' star is in talks to take on one of the lead roles in Barry Levinson's all-star comedy after the troubled actor pulled out of the project last month, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
LaBeouf had surprisingly signed on in January after declaring he intended to retire from acting and "all public life" following "attacks against his artistic integrity", before dropping out a few weeks later.
Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel and Danny McBride all star in the tale of a has-been rock manager's (Murray) musical misadventures in Afghanistan.

Russell Crowe ‘surprised’ by extent of Noah controversy

Russell Crowe was "surprised" by the "volume" of controversy surrounding 'Noah'.
The Hollywood star hits the big screen as the titular character in the forthcoming film and although he anticipated criticism he didn't expect it would go as far as it has.
The film has been banned in numerous countries, including Pakistan, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and the Middle East, among other places, because the governments of those countries believe it contradicts the teachings of Islam and some religious groups claim the story has been inaccurately portrayed.
Talking at the film's premiere in London's Leicester Square on Monday (31.03.14), he told BANG Showbiz: "I think when you go to a movie like this you understand that there is going to be a lot of ... controversy.
"I was surprised by the volume of it. Because you are talking about people, who by and large, are making comments based on their imagination of what it might be in a movie that they haven't seen. So it's like, 'what'?!"
The 49-year-old actor shot scenes on an Icelandic beach and kept finding small stones in unwanted places days after filming.
Crowe previously said: "That was pretty much all day lying around naked and they have these little stones, right, it's kind of as the lava meets the sea and they get smoothed off and what have you... these stones get really round.
"It was like four days (after shooting the scene), you're still getting dressed in the morning and these little stones are falling out and it's like, 'Where has that been for four days?'"
Director Darren Aronofsky, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone and
Logan Lerman all attended the film's London premiere.

Chris Martin sings of infidelity amidst split with Gwyneth Paltrow

Chris Martin has seemingly spoken about his split with Gwyneth Paltrow on Coldplay's upcoming 'Ghost Stories' album.
The frontman - who is renowned for writing confessional lyrics - has written about the "pain" of infidelity on 'Another's Arms' which is speculated to be the reason for his split with the 'Iron Man 3' actress after 11 years of marriage.
Chris, 37, sings: "Late night watching TV, used to be you here beside me, your body on my body. When the pain just rips through me. Another's arms, another's arms."
The song comes in the wake of Gwyneth's denial of two alleged affairs with lawyer Kevin Yorn and Jeffery Soffer, who is married to Elle MacPherson.
While the lyrics could be coincidental, Coldplay did perform the melancholic track for an audience of 800 guests at Sony's Studios in Culver City, California just days before Gwyneth, 41, and Chris announced their "conscious uncoupling" on her Goop website.
Chris also appears to bare his emotions on several other tracks on the album, including 'Ink' which hints at a reunion with his estranged wife.
He sings: "I don't want nobody else but you. Call it magic. Cut me in two. If you were to ask me, after all that we've been through, I'd still believe in magic."
Chris and his band mates - Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion - will release their new album on May 19 and their new atmospheric sound is a big departure from the band's usual melodies and catchy riffs.
Despite their split, Chris and Gwyenth - who have two children, Apple, nine, and Moses, seven - are still close friends and were seen enjoying a holiday in The Bahamas with pals over the weekend.

The Spice Girls for Las Vegas gig as foursome

The Spice Girls could be set to sign a multi-million pound deal to play gigs as a foursome in Las Vegas.
Victoria Beckham has given her blessing to let band mates Mel C, Mel B, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell perform without her as she continues to focus on her fashion career.
A Las Vegas source told the Daily Star newspaper: "Mel B has been working on her contacts for weeks now.
"Victoria has not budged on her stance to not join them, so they are planning to go out as a foursome.
"It will take them a good 18 months to get all the parts in place if they want to do a residency and possibly a tour to follow."
The band mates have been discussing a residency at Planet Hollywood, following in the footsteps of Britney Spears, and the shows are being planned for 2016, which marks the 20th anniversary of the band's hit 1996 song 'Wannabe'.
The concerts could earn the band up to £20 million but Victoria, 39, feels her days on stage are over and Mel B, 38, is taking the lead on the project, while promoters are said to have approached Backstreet Boys to perform as a support act.
Brian Littrell allegedly said: "We are actually in early talks about maybe doing a world tour together with the Spice Girls", before the band denied the claims.

James Middleton admits the Middleton family are "close".
The Duchess of Cambridge's brother - who co-founded Boomf, a service which offers to print Instagram photographs on to marshmallows - says his parents' strong work ethic has rubbed off on him and insists the whole family pulls together and is extremely supportive of anything they decide to pursue.
He told the Evening Standard newspaper: "For Mum and Dad ... work and home is family, so work is family and home is family. We grew up with that.
"We're great at doing it. It's about producing many different mediums to be able to celebrate. Celebrations are great fun. Bunting and this and that and the other.
"I love my family very much and I'm very, very close to [them]. I support everything every single person in my family does and vice versa."
Asked if he views being a Middleton as a negative or positive in business, he added: "Both. But like anything you want to be known as an individual, not what people perceive you to be."

Sinitta wants Rihanna for X Factor

Sinitta would love to see "fearless" Rihanna join the UK 'X Factor' judges panel.
The 'So Macho' singer - who has appeared as a guest star during the judges' houses stage of the competition in previous years - insists the 'Diamonds' hitmaker has everything it takes to be a good mentor to contestants on the forthcoming series of the ITV singing contest.
Talking to BANG Showbiz at the premiere of 'Noah' in London's Leicester Square on Monday (31.03.14), she said: "I'm gonna to Rihanna. I think she's current, she's relevant, fearless. I think she really knows what she likes and what she doesn't like and she would bring that out in the contestants. I think she'd be fun to watch."
Simon has reportedly been trying to hire Rihanna to join the show - alongside confirmed judge Cheryl Cole - because she draws lots of media attention and he's desperate to make the programme more popular than BBC One rival 'Strictly Come Dancing'.
A source previously said: "Simon and Cheryl have two months to find someone to sit in that chair and they want to get the right person.
"This year is an important one for 'The X Factor'. Simon can't be complacent and has to come back with a real A-Team.
"Rihanna would be a shock selection because she is not an obvious choice for a family show - but that's what he wants."

Natasha Hamilton expecting a baby with Ritchie Neville

Ritchie Neville and Natasha Hamilton are expecting a baby together.
The 5ive singer and the Atomic Kitten star fell in love after starring on ITV2 show 'The Big Reunion' last year and have now taken their blossoming relationship to a whole new level.
Unveiling the news of her pregnancy in the new issue of Britain's OK! magazine, Natasha enthused: "It's a complete miracle!"
The red head - who separated from her husband of six years, Riad Erraji, last July - is already a mother to young sons Alfie, Harry and Josh, but the baby will be 34-year-old singer Ritchie's first child.
Natasha admits the 'Keep on Movin' hitmaker was overcome with anxiety when he saw the first images of the new life they had created together, laughing: "After the first scan I could breathe - but Ritchie went into panic mode."
However, the pop hunk is determined to be a hands-on father and get involved with every last detail of the impending birth.
He said: "Natasha's stuck with me forever now, no matter what happens! I want to be a hands-on dad. Tash will be feeding the baby and I'll be feeding her sandwiches."
While the couple recently announced their intention to move in together, Natasha insists they won't be walking down the aisle any time soon.
She added: "We've talked about marriage before - but there's no rush."

Halle Berry: Kids are different

Halle Berry says her son has a "different energy" to her daughter.
The 47-year-old actress - who has five-year-old Nahla with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry and five-month-old Maceo with husband Olivier Martinez - has found there have always been clear differences between her two kids, even from such a young age.
Asked how her son is, she said: "Fantastic. It's different, the energy. Whoever says they're not different from the start, they've never had both."
The 'Frankie and Alice' actress also admitted being a parent has had an impact on her work because having kids has been such a "life-changing" experience.
She told E! News: "Being a mom - that started when I had my daughter six years ago - you do start to bring different levels to your performances because being a mom is so life-changing and transforming when you have that right of passage and so it would be very hard for me not to bring that to every single thing that I do and I love that."
While Halle loves motherhood, she recently admitted she isn't planning to have any more children.
She said: "I'm surprised I had the one I just had! So I doubt God is going to bless me again. I think I'm done!"

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin holiday on Faith Hill’s island

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin are holidaying on Faith Hill and Tim McGraw's private island.
The former couple - who announced last week they were ending their 10-year marriage - flew from Eleuthera in the Bahamas, where they have been vacationing since news of their split broke, to nearby Goat Cay with their children Apple, nine. and Moses, seven, by private plane on Sunday (30.03.14).
A source who saw the pair boarding their plane told MailOnline: "They looked happy and calm. Chris was wearing a hat and Gwyneth was casual in a white t-shirt...they drove right up to their private jet with the kids in tow."
The plane took off around 9.50am and landed in Cave Cay, a private islet where commercial aircraft are banned, and were met by an "entourage of staff" before boarding a private boat to take them to the 17-acre island which their friends - who they bonded with when Gwyneth and Tim made 'Country Strong' together in 2010 - have owned since 2008.
The island boasts a 15,000-square-foot, four-bedroom house that comes complete with a lookout tower, as well as three smaller houses for their staff.
Despite their separation, the Coldplay frontman and the 'Iron Man 3' star have pledged to stay friends for the sake of their kids and appeared closer than ever on their holiday last week.
An onlooker in a restaurant where the pair were dining said: "Chris was making Gwyneth laugh until she had to wipe tears from her eyes.
"You wouldn't believe they were divorcing. They were deep in conversation and looked really happy together."

Rita Ora was obsessed with illustration

Rita Ora was "obsessed" with an illustration which she had tattooed to her rib cage.
The 'I Will Never Let You Down' singer, who already had a number of inkings, has gone topless on the front cover of the May edition of UK ELLE magazine and shows off the huge pin-up girl tattoo inspired by a Alberto Vargas image.
She told the magazine: "It's based on an original piece by Alberto Vargas, who was an incredible illustrator in the 1930s.
"He was one of the creators of the pin-up image. That's our build, our power.
"That's why I was obsessed with it, learning what men don't understand about women and what women don't understand about men.
"I was obsessed with the painting a long time ago, and then I got it done six months ago.'
"I just love pretty things, whether it is art, a song or a pair of shoes."
The 23-year-old star - who is dating DJ Calvin Harris - chose tattooist Bang Bang McCurdy to create the art work, which took five hours and was described as "the most detailed tattoo" he'd ever done for a celebrity.
He said at the time: 'The tattoo is on her right ribcage. It's big! When she's standing it's about seven inches tall, but when she's laying down it's about 10 inches, plus."
